Yeah Ollie,  but this is my confession thread where it's safe to be as objective as possible, talk about "what is" without bias because in essence I don't know squat. Nobody is sentencing anyone.  Just a place to learn about this stuff according to our understanding (or in my case total lack of).

Anybody know why original Karaoke is illegal in the US ?  It makes sense that recording labels would wish to protect their signed names from possible exploitation, and keep things strict. Since Motown appears to be the exception and not the norm, I wonder if a lot of artists that were under the Motown label such as The Jackson 5 & Commodores, Diana Ross etc, lose their Autonomy AND label protection regarding fate of their work assuming the label decides in the case of Motown work ???

I'm still waiting for one of these experts to explain to me the process of NSTC synchronization and how it it is any different between changing the  letters or color of letters in each frame by using vertical and horizontal sync pulses or how they can explain to me how the swipes are synced to each word other than duration.

Does this law apply to PAL also?

Might apply to PAL L, but not PAL N, PAL Nc, but in Brazil apply to exported PAL M  :headscratch:

(well you've got to admit,  it looks cool to say that !)

LMAO Kappy I have a confession to make In most of the illegal threads I was exaterating and egging on and rolling on the floor. I come from a generation that if you call me a thief liar or say my business is illegal or walk into my shop and say I stole my tools you will be bleeding into the dumpster in the alley and if you are not dying I will not call 911..b I half killed a marine in a bar in gato Italy Men dont accuse unless they have proof and are willing to fight for their opinion in the alley or a court of law.

I come from the days that moonshiners and bootleggers were fulfilling a need Did I report them to the revenuers F&&& no....I will stand beside the working man till the day I die. And anybody trying to feed a family I will support with my life as long as it isnt selling drugs. Lets get real!!!!!

Now!! As small businessmen how can we educate the cdg manus what we need and teach them how to promote karaoke?  How can we unite and approach congress? It is a very complex federal, issue and sitting here arguing like a bunch of teens does nothing for the thing we love.

Will the real Kj's and positive karaoke hosts come back please? And lets see what we can do...

It appears you have two VERY different trains of thought going here, of which to me it seems only ONE of them is doable.

Quote:

Does the business world work this way ?  Can "small people" teach manufacturers ANYTHING ?  The consumer population as a whole, sure.  But since large business is replacing the small guy, seems the large businesses learned a LONG time ago in the competitive world what is required to compete.  Price point, and Customer Service.

This would be a great question for somebody who has a knowledge of Karaoke to answer, not me.  I asked a similar question awhile back.  I was wondering about that young female Atty who started the IP justice site.  She encourages questions, and answers them.

Any successful business has a full customer relations department is fully aware of customer and public needs...They hold seminars on how to use their product and promote their customers business. They provide support in any fashion possible to make sure their customers are succeeding. They dont threaten them with lawsuits. Give me a break!!!Sound Choice or nobody else has promoted karaoke all they want is the quick buck of a fad .. SUE SUE SUE.... The businesses that didnt listen to their customers were left out in the cold How in the hell do you think Japanese manus took over the broadcast industry and many others The auto industry is in shambles.. Why in the hell should I suffer or my singers suffer for inadequasies on their end I will not put up with it...

Ollie,  For the sake of discussion (not argument LOL ) I can view this two ways. Does the company despite being somewhat less personal make a good product ? If many feel this way and the company folds, what would options be for a comparable affordable quality ?  Who is getting shot in the foot longer term when consumers don't support merchants in their specific area of work/pleasure ?   Is this company unreasonable to deal with ?  Many factors, BUT.. Since I just found out about who the company is less than 24 hours ago, I don't qualify to speak LOL.

Similarly here, probably 90% of small merchants folded over the past 25 years. CVS was buying the small mom and pop "drug stores" to help bail the small guy out ?  Of course not,  they wanted the local established customer base !  Made it easier and quicker for them.  But, when all is said and done, and smaller business is no longer around because many claim "I didn't see a reason to pay 30% more for a product at the small guys place when I could get it at CVS for less", the customer is also saying something else,  "It wasn't worth it for me to support my local merchants".  By that same token, that gives them little right to complain when they fold, and customer service, and quality, at the place that's left stinks in comparison.

My point being, there's almost ALWAYS something SOMEBODY somewhere feels that CAN justify, or even vindicate their reasons to not support a specific business (and in many cases such justification is called "rationalization"), the question is when the business is no longer, then what ?

Ollie,  One other thing, then I'm going to shut up because I really don't know about this area.  I'm going to listen and learn from those that do HOWEVER Matt did bring up something that is EXTREMELY valuable, and IMHO it's representative of how the small businessman and larger business CAN work together.. It's really quite valuable
and it made me think that THIS CAN'T ethically be disagreed with assuming business people wish to maintain integrity in their respective area.

How can anybody disagree with this statement ?  I can't think of anyway personally. Assuming honesty, and integrity IS important in ones area.

Quote:
So you'll have to buy the foreign discs if you want to stay with original music, I'm afraid. For the rest of us loyal karaoke purchasers, we're used to finding as close to the original as we can.

While this is saying there ARE other options, it's also saying "but I'd rather operate with integrity and practice what I preach".  Isn't that how smaller businessmen and KJ's CAN teach EVERYBODY ?

(now I'm going to shutup and learn from those of you that have knowledge of a specific area I don't have knowledge of. Nothing more I can say)

In Summary:  Is there really anything more poignant a smaller business person can teach ANYBODY in todays world than "Maintain ethical standards in your area of work" ?

(We've all participated in COUNTLESS pages of "legal vs illegal", but IMO what Matt just said in ONE sentence, when thought thru is MUCH more compelling a reason to "keep it clean").  Reason being, WHO are the KJ's and Karaoke lovers hurting in not being loyal and honest shortly down the road ?   Likely the WHOLE industry, which can't possibly preclude hurting themselves.

Let's take this one step further.

When your area of work becomes stressful, and it's tough to make ends meet, do you

A) Cheat and become part of the problem you condemn ?

B)  Realize your end in this particular area is close, it's time to close shop but still
be able to say to yourself, and others you tried your darndest, and operated
with integrety knowing you can think back in clean conscience maintain self-
respect, and the earned respect of others who feel you are a trustworthy,
     ethical person ?

I can tell you this,  *A* although the wrong answer IMHO is a TOUGH road for most NOT to take !!  However think about it,  HOW many of us went into the performing arts, and entertainment fields assuming we'd make 7+ digit incomes in THIS area of work as a part timer in a lounge even with the ocassional bar mitzvah and wedding  ?   Most did it because they (and in this case *I*) liked what we were doing, felt it was something that was up our alley, enabling us to get along in a comfortable area but also make some additional income.  Few "reasonably" go into entertainment thinking they are going to be a name (100 years from now) recalled in the Who's Who of performing artists for most noteable entertainer. We went into an area because we liked it enough to want to invest A LOT of energy and capital in, for some of us the fact that we came out've it STILL loving it makes us ahead of the game because given todays circumstances our bosses (owners of liquor serving establishments) are struggling in many geographic areas, and we either become over qualified payscale-wise (entertainment gets cut as a luxury when revenue is down), or "laid off for lack of work with no pink slip". As this happens things often get ugly.  In my case I was lucky,  I just wasn't fit for the lifestyle of what I was doing but personally, I STILL love music, I adhered strictly to "The Code of the Road" and never screwed a fellow musician, was as honest as I could be, when the going got tough I ran like hell, and survived to tell about it !  Manly ?  I doubt it but honest, yep !  I flunked HONESTLY !  so I won in many ways !  and part of the reason I "flunked".  I learned I HATE politics,  I hate seeing others I form alliances with SCREWED while I'm supposed to keep my mouth shut (in order to make more money) while good people are getting used. This happens in SO many realms because it's always business at some point when dealing with others and making a buck or two.  It appears at some point there comes a decision to make which is either, "Make a few extra dollars and shutup despite the fact that you are an accessory to crooked antics" essentially selling your soul to the devil, or say "Screw it, you folks are trash, next it'll be me you're screwing, I don't need this money that badly, I'm just not hungry enough"..  I don't like seeing good people screwed.  Especially when the people getting screwed are the ONLY ones I've met that've been good and honest to me.  I can't, I won't, and to me THAT is what constitutes a "cheap person".  "Do unto others" aint such a bad thing !!!

Actually some of us do that exweedfarmer. But what I do is totally antiquated in terms of what KJ's would be able to do, in fact it's even more antiquated than Mr T's Sing-Along LOL  (I use tapes and lyrics). I only do this because I'm a musician and it's actually easier than reading scrolling lyrics to set with song time signature assuming I'm familiar with the basics of the song phrasing..
Really?  I'm going back into live music too. But since I like to use my own arrangements and timing I also have to make my own backing tracks so the whole scrolling-lyrics thing didn't work for me.
I wrote this http://dl.winsite.com/bin/downl?31000000037177 lyrics displyer that works with a foot switch.  It's a complete POS app. that I put about a half an hours work into but it is freeware if you can use it.  It's good for learning the lyrics but that's about it.

Towards the end even the Live musicians were accompanying themselves using the Fostex analog 4 tracks and playing along with themselves on tape in a few cases to optimize pay when entertainment payout started to downscale in smaller pubs, and venues. "One man band".  I never could or would go that route. Can't sing, and prefer backing the frontman.  Lounge piano sure, but not ballad and classic rock with bandaoke behind me

It is a sad note of affairs when a country was founded upon freedom of speech life liberty and the persuit of happiness yet greed and laws does not permit my children to sing in public. Are you proud of that? You want to control what my kids sing, you want to sensor what they can say. You want to pass laws against singing and prayers

Let me tell you what you liberals can pass all the laws you want You will not tell me where my children can pray. You will not tell them what they can sing or where they can sing...

So how are they preventing your children to sing in public?  as long as the proper fees are paid, they can sing to their heart's content.  Just because you live in a free country doesn't mean you get everything  for free.  You talk about the working man, well the people who write songs are working people and are entitled to be paid for that work. whether that pay is $50 or $5,000,000.  You complain about copyright holders making huge sums of money.  Well there are actors, athletes and other professiona that also make onscene amounts of money.  But that is the free enterprise system of supply and demand.  Freedom isn't free, many people have paid the highest price for it.

Ollie.  Do you believe in the right to Patent ?   Do you believe that it's fair to allow a person to protect, Copyright, and receive credit for THEIR concepts and work in this fair country ?   Or should an individual have no special rights to their innovations, creative works, no more "intellectual property" and whatever ANYBODY thinks up becomes fair game for anybody to do as they choose with ?

Conservative folk, Liberal folk all have a right to express their feelings. Are THEY the problem ?  Wouldn't it be hypocritical to deny them a voice ?  They are just voicing how *they* feel. Right or wrong it's THEIR right too. But who's the biggest problem ?  As I see it it's the greater percentage that sit around and do nothing, don't think, sure they complain, but when something is blatantly wrong and they know it they wait for SOMEBODY else to take a stand, they'd rather keep their heads in the sand and assume what goes on around them is remote, it's not critical like their golfscore, and watching their favorite TV program.  MANY of these individuals rather than make waves want everybody to like them so they don't take a stand, they don't like confrontation and avoid it.  WHO'S the bigger problem ?  Those with an opinion regardless of how different it is ?  or the Sheeple ?

The general voting public today scares the #$(# out've me.  We can fingerpoint at "liberals", "conservatives", "Libertarians", but if there's a crises it's likely because of the greater majority that didn't think, didn't have a perspective on an issue, and wanted somebody else "to take care of the problem" because THEY don't want to be confrontational.  "Head in the sand" mentality scares me,  not those that have an opinion and express it.  Ironically Ollie, here's another thing.  We DON'T have "constitutional rights" everyplace we go in this country.  Example. "private bboards".  While constitutional rights are so important. WHY do so many opt to join private chat venues where they knowingly give such rights up ?  Because socially interactive critters such as people GIVE AND TAKE !!   We compromise !   NONE get theiir way ALL the time !   That wouldn't be a "free" scenerio, that'd be chaos !

ADDED IN:

BTW Ollie,  I think it's great you feel strongly about certain things, and I'm by no means judging anything.  I'm just trying to look at a larger picture, and of course I'm sitting on a fence trying not to be confrontational because this way more will like me  LOL  and since my freedom of expression usually doesn't fit within the confines of BBoard Terms of Service descriptions I usually agree to forfeit my constitutional right to free expression !  LMAO  LMAO
