How do you call up the next singer in the rotation?  I try to keep it interesting and make the singer feel wanted. Like "Next up to enterain us Is Bob singing "Lady" and then after he's done singing " Lets give it up for Bob" or somthing like that. We went to a show the other night a the KJ would shout "Hey Bob" or "Hey Sue" and never changed all night long.  Sometimes after a song he'd give a "Nice try" or "not bad".
So how do you do it?

How about (in your best lounge lizard voice):

"Next up on the main stage for all you fellas we have Destiny."

Seems to work well at the adult clubs.....

Pretty basic here.  I call up the next singer.  After I do encourage a round of a applause or give it up for or let's hear it for or if they weren't that great - nice job (name) & then tell the audience put your hands together.
Had a poll a few years back within the club about what you like/dislike at karaoke shows & one of the main complaints I got was the host usually talked too much trying to be the 'entertainer' & they'd rather the host just get the singer up - so that's what I do now.  May not work in other situations.

if the next singer was "Bob,"  calling him up might go something like this....

"Bob!"  normal voice.  "Bob!"  munchkin voice.  Gay voice "Next we have Bob singing " I enjoy being a girl" and I see him comming now and isn't he simply stunning in that pink Chiffon and taffata...."  and if he still isn't on stage, sung to the tune of an aria in the "Marriage of Figero" or whatever else happens to come to my warped little mind.  "Bo-oo-oo-oo-oo-oo-oo-ah-ob.  Bob!"  By this point he's either on stage or I skip him.  No closing comments.  Call up the next singer in an equally moronic way.

My main job is to make sure the rotation keeps moving, so everyone can sing as  much as possible, so I try to keep it short and sweet. I wait for the applause to die down then call their name. Now if they are in the back of the bar I'll drag it out a little. I did say a little.  LMAO Most of my regulars have interesting names, so this is an easy task. For ex: Hanky Panky - if he is making his way to the stage I do a audience yell back. ( I say Hanky, you say Panky - I say HANKY than the audience says PANKY)
I have a guy that calls himself spiderman, so everyone sings the spiderman song until he gets to the stage. Goofy stuff like that.

Now when they're done I try to encourage applause:

Let's here it for ____
Put your hands together for _____
Show your love for _____ or where's the love for ____
If it's there 1st time ever I make sure people are aware and encourage the person with applause or if they are new to the bar it's a big welcome to our new singer.

I joke with my people a lot, so it isn't unusual to have funny things yelled from the audience between songs, but I'm always aware of getting the next singer started as soon as possible.  :D

It's actually not what you say but how you say it. We run the filler music thru a compressor and duck it down under the announce mic so there is never a lull. I talk faster than normal and with enthusiasm. A typical might go like this "Hey now we're going to have old old country again cmon Wyatt Hey maggie you need another slip up here. Come again folks." I hardly ever say the same thing twice in a night. I might even announce singers or customers when they walk in the door. My regs know that I dont want them to tarry on the way up esp in the last 30 or 45 minutes. . Also we have a singers rotation on the screen between songs that has the next singer on the bottom which helps too.

The end is about the same When somebody nails a song and the crowd is going nuts I dont say anything  give them a hug and escort them back towards their table.

Wow!  I'd walk right out of a place like that!  We make all our folks feel like they did the besst rendition ever....even if our ears are bleeding.

We do very similar intros to the others here, although to be fair we DO have one guy whom we all "boo" every time he goes up to sing.  It's a joke htat all the regulars know, but it sure gets funny looks from new customer! LOL

I try to personlaize it with regulars. I am able to incorporate some DJ music or sound bites for example....I  will play "Lollipop Guild" from the Wizard of Oz, and everyone in the bar knows who I am talking about... or example for new singers that I don't know "20th Century Fox Fanfare" or Trumpets, and then say their name..... Funeral Bells for someone that's going to do an ACDC song all kinds of things....crowd usually likes it.  Use a lot of sound bites or parts of tunes.

Or just Call their name trying to inflect as much enthusiasm in it as I can.

Funny you should mention this ...We do that too , the bartender likes to be in rotation & is sometimes too busy or it takes her a minute to get free but when we start playing the theme to The Andy Griffeth Show everyone knows its her LOL ! We've had a few people tell us that they have whistled the tune the whole ride home before Hahaha !

It is fun when the whole bar knows exactly who you are calling without even saying a name.......I get people coming and asking for their own intro as well. So you know it is a positive thing.

I have the Andy Griffith theme but have not found a person to use it on yet. I do use Benny Hill...hilarious. Sometimes when I get a trio "3 Stooges theme" works. All fun.

I have one regular who lives beside a church called St. Mary's, So I play Church Bells and call out "Straight from beneath the bells of St. Mary's"

If I don't do it I get the "What no bells? routine........anyway thanks for the feedback.

There is a place here, very close to my house that I went to about a month ago. The guy was very insulting to the singers. He would say things like "Wow, that sucked"  or "Thank God we made it through that one", "Sue will be torturing us next"  How in the world does this guy keep this gig?? I have no idea, and no one was laughing at all.....I did walk out and I will never go back... I don't care how bad someone sounds encouragement and kudos should be given.  Heck, if for nothing else but getting up on stage, it takes a lot of guts to get up there and sing and I think a lot of times because we do it so much we forget how hard it is.

I use sound bites and tidbits like kelly does. I was told they are actually called "Shouts". But anyway, we also might play a commercial, or a television theme like brady bunch, or green acres. Everyone knows the words and sings along to them. My favorite filler is "Let's Get Naked"...i have it on a loop, and it repeats 3 or 4 times untill the singer is on stage. Also I don't introduce the song, i introduce and call up the singer of course, but i let the singer introduce their own song, they really enjoy doing that. And it helps to relax the singer especially first timers.

LMAO Now that's funny

I had fun doing the silly intro music for people too. My favorite to do was Sponge Bob Square Pants. Unfortunately I have to many singers now and it eats up time.

My son (age 9) loves SpongeBob!  In our school district, the high school teams are the Pirates, and a few years ago I bought him a water bottle with the team logo and mascot on it.  He took one look at the pirate on the bottle and immediately began singing, "Who lives in a pineapple under the sea..."   LOL

Oh, btw...For the past 2 weeks I've gone to a casino on Tues. nights for Rockstar Karaoke.  It's karaoke with a live band (3 guys--guitar, bass & drums--and they all sing too).  It was sooooo much fun!  Anyway, there were 2 different MC's both weeks I was there, and they both did something that I thought was rather cool:  They would call the person up to the stage, and then say to the crowd, "Everybody say, 'Hi, (name)' on the count of 3..."  (Or if there were more than one singer, they'd have everybody say "Hi, guys!")

Something else that the 1st MC that I saw did (I don't know whether the 2nd guy did this or not):  If he called someone's name and they didn't show, he'd count down from 5 and then say, "(name), your @$$ is..." and the crowd would shout, "OUT OF HERE!"

Unfortunately--as of this week, Rockstar Karaoke is now "out of here" as well.  Tues. night was their last night.  The bar didn't renew their contract.  I am really disappointed because I just started going there last week, and now they're discontinuing it!  I hope and pray that the band can get another steady gig where they can do live band karaoke!

For everyone that sings, I made up a splash screen that shows...

"Now Singing:" and then their name.

For some regulars, I'd spice things up a bit... I'd have a specific song I'd play for them, a comedy bit, sound bite... video bite, etc... For a hot babe walkin' up, it'd be the Sammy Hagar sound bite of "HELLLOoooooo BABY!!!"...

I was always playing around with that stuff.

For the folks I hadn't met yet, or were just beginning their tenure as my inmates, it was a learning experience. Some liked the attention, others didn't.

I do something similar - I'll say their name then say going once, their name - going twice - their name GONE ! Everyone seems to like to yell GONE with me. I understand how stuff like that just evolves on its own.  LMAO
