What a great forum.  Found it just in time as I'm in the process of building a home karaoke system.  So I've read a bunch of post not to use home theater speakers for live singing, but I haven't found anything on using the receiver as an amp with passive PA speaker hooked up.

Will running live sound ruin my home theater receiver?

Thanks!

No, not at all. I ran that way for over a year, and in fact still do for practice in the house with my wife. (I have a live-sound setup for practicing in my office.)

Thanks for the quick reply.  So really as long as the speakers can handle the vocal spikes, I should be ok huh.

You mentioned in one of your post that you had a more pro setup with a Behringer amped PA system.  How much better sounding is that system then the MTX one.

Thanks

Not that much for home use. In fact, I still use the MTX speakers attached to the Behringer powered mixer in lots of situations. The 12" 33-lb. speakers are a lot easier to move than the 15" 63-lb. ones. The MTX sound good enough that I haven't bothered to buy better ones (I am just an amateur, mind you, and only do a few gigs a year).

For home use, the MTX speakers will be just fine. If you want to use it for gigging, I think you would be better off buying Yamaha or other 12" pro-style speakers. But for $200/pair, I don't think it is easy to beat those MTX speakers. They blow away the other cheap brands I have heard, and the reviews indicate I am not alone in this opinion. Most importantly for your situation, they drive well with your typical 100w/channel home theater amp, which may not be true for the higher-end PA speakers.

My top advice is that whatever speakers you get, buy stands. The only downside of the MTX compared to live-sound speakers is the lack of a stand socket. I got some mounts to put on the MTX.

Despite what was said, YES it can harm your home theater receiver.  If you are careful & don't turn it up too loud, it should be ok.

Thanks for both of your replies.  As my receiver is fairly expensive, I wouldn't want to take a chance (even a slightly) and ruin it.  So off to a PA system instead.
