Strawberries are kind of odd. Every time I get them at the grocery store if they set out very long at all they grow mold. I've found the best way to deal with them is to take all of them and soak them in a big bowl of water with some type of rinse solution. I will use one drop of dish detergent if nothing else. Let them sit a bit and then rinse well. Then, set out to dry on some paper towels. When dry, cut the green stems / leaves off and possibly slice up if you prefer. Put in a plastic, sealed container in the refrigerator. I will also usually fold up a dry paper towel and put in there with them to act as a dessicant to keep them dry. They will last a while that way and stay good.
However I will say it is tough to find good strawberries at grocery stores. They often are picked before they are fully ripe, which means they never get as sweet as they should even though they may turn red. Sometimes they taste really screwed up like this, and there just isn't anything you can do.
About 30 or 40 miles from here is the town of Fredicksburg. It is a small German settled town and they are known for their vineyards, and peaches, and they even have strawberries / blackberries etc in season. A month or so ago I went and picked strawberries off the plants directly. They instruct you which ones to pick. You don't want to pick any that aren't completely red. Some were fully bright red, and delicious as I popped them in my mouth right off the plant. It just never gets as good as that at the store - fully ripened strawberries. I'm sure some are better than others.
Hopefully you can find some good ones up there Crystal. You might inquire around. Are you too far north for strawberries to grow? If not perhaps in season you could visit a similar place.

well Bill.... as far as keeping them from going moldy.... the trick is to choose a container/basket that doesn't have any squished strawberries.... it's the soggy juicy mess that grows mold. If they stay dry, they usually last longer. Having said that... I only wash them as I use them.... that way they STAY dry while they're in the fridge.
As for picking them off the plant... ABSOLUTELY they're WAAAAY sweeter. I always make myself sick from eating WAY too many when I pick 'em myself! haha! I never learn.... And yes, we can grow strawberries here. Actually, the town I used to live in before I moved in January had TONS of strawberry fields in the surrounding area, but I just moved to the mountains... I don't know where the closest strawberry fields are here... I'm sure I'd have to drive quite a ways to find some.
Oh well..... the dinky little grocery store here has surprisingly good produce, so I'll settle for the store-bought ones if I have to
ok.... now I have to address another issue..... DISH SOAP TO WASH YOUR STRAWBERRIES?!?!?!?! maybe that's why yours aren't very sweet!! (jk) but ewww.... You nut! ![Wink ;)](./images/smilies/icon_wink.gif) I'll just use plain old water.... a little dirt can't hurt me anyways.

Come on Crystal...it's just one small drop in say a gallon of water. Granted dish soap is very soapy, but I mix it up first and then put in the Strawberries. I used to have have some type of fruit / vegetable rinse but it's hard to find. What was that stuff called? Seems like it was a three / four letter name like Pert or something. That stuff I think is kind of like dish soap but also has citric acid.
Doing some research around you find out how much pesticides and crap are on fruits and vegetables. Some fruits like apples have wax sprayed on them. It can be real tough to wash all that stuff off with just water. I suppose I got paranoid. It's probably a wonder I don't just put them all in the dish washer and run it. LMAO But anyway, I try and keep the solution real weak soap wise, and then thoroughly rinse so it seems good. Seems they taste better washed like that. The odd tasting strawberries I think were just odd tasting (unripe) berries.
Ok, here it is, I Googled it. Being Preggers you probably want to use this stuff.

BTW you look great Crystal in all your maternity. Hope you are prospering.

Bill,
I know that little bit of soap won't kill me, but still.... it just seems yucky! hey... I'm weird, I know.... I'd rather eat the dirt! ![LOL LOL](./images/smilies/emot-LOL.gif) !
Yep, I've heard of that Fit fruit and veggie wash..... I tried it, but I seem to remember it causing my lettuce to go really limp and blah, so I just never bothered to use it anymore.
Matt,
I KNOW!! I really should grow my own, shouldn't I? Especially because we're in the middle of buying a house right now (oh it's so purdy, but I'll tell ya more about that if we get it) so I'd have a garden!! I can already see the raspberry and strawberry bushes in the yard...... not to mention peas, garlic and chives!
My mom used to have a strawberry bush in the yard, but wanna know how many I got to eat? ONE!! ONE STINKIN STRAWBERRY!! wanna know why? Cuz my dog kept eatin' 'em! hahaha..... throw a steak down and she won't touch it.... give her a carrot or strawberry and she goes nuts...... go figure...
Babs,
you're a doll!! Thank you! ![Wink ;)](./images/smilies/icon_wink.gif) I just can't hear that enough lately!! I feel like a friggin cow!!
OH BY THE WAY...
Looks like it's gonna be an early baby (which I already expected, cuz early babies run in my family. My sister has never reached her due-date before). she's already dropped.... the head is extremely low (which explains why I hafta pee every 3.8 minutes) I saw my doc today... he was discussing my ultrasound results which I had done on Thursday. He wants me to have another one this Friday too see the growth in a week. They need to make sure she's growing at a healthy pace, so I guess having them done really close together makes it easier to chart or something....
so.... anyways... basically, I gotta take it easy or else the baby might fall out! (yeah.... right.... if only it were that easy)

Bill, didn't you ever just pick fruit off a vine, tree or bush? I grew up in the country and that's pretty much snack time for us. Strawberries, Blackberries, Peaches, Plums, etc. DDT and dirt are our friends! hehehehe......oh i forgot to mention that if you sneak into a watermelon patch, you better watch out for the owner sitting in the shadows with a shotgun full of salt pellet shells.

![LOL LOL](./images/smilies/emot-LOL.gif) Yeah I actually I have. I used to live in an area in the Hill Country where the dew berries (blackberries) grew wild and always went down and picked them. They were particularly great right after a rain shower. Yum. Strawberries I've never seen growing wild. Anyway I used to eat the blackberries right off the vine, and the strawberries in Fredricksburg. I don't mind the dirt, but I'm starting to wonder if the pesticides are good for me. :)
