Hey Vicki, this is my friend Betty.  She is like a 2nd Mom to me.  You'll meet her when you come visit me.  SHe is such a card! The woman is in her 80's but she runs circles around me!  I took this pic of us on Friday with my camera phone.

We had to take Home Economics in junior high school and had a sewing class that was mandatory. We had the Principal come to the classroom because we were throwing needles into the walls and at each other and hitting the pedal on the sewing machines to max out our little man pleasures.  The first car I ever drove?...a sewing machine!  Anyway, even though we could stick needles in the wall we never could get them to stick in anyone in the classroom so yeah, it was sort of boring. I gave it a 78 because even though it had great lyrics, I couldn't dance to it.

In the 60's when I was in Jr High Home Econ was for girls,  guys had mechanical drawing and metal shop.  Sewing was for girls too.  You wouldn't catch many guys going to Sewing or Home Ec classes in the 60's.  I think our fathers would've even encouraged us to cut such classes in those days .  My dad wouldn't have allowed my school to force me to take sewing.  But this is a guy who also would've broken my arms and legs if I ever came home with a pierced ear in those days

I think that's why we all rebelled so hard. We had been able to take shop prior but some liberal somewhere decided we would benefit from home economics, baking, cooking, sewing etc.  In the end I doubt they left the class mandatory.  

We did make some pretty good baking powder biscuits!

I think sewing, and home economics are great for males to have exposure to, don't get me wrong, BUT..  Some things I believe at certain ages should be left as :elective: classes.  If a guy ends up in a local community college because his wife gives him an ultimatim, and says "you need to learn to cook too" that's a different story  LOL


In the service don't guys need to know how to sew ?   I just don't think Jr high aged males should be forced to take up sewing,  if the parents want them to know how to do it,  fine,  if THEY *and I seriously doubt they will* wish to learn it themselves fine.. But teach them how to balance a checkbook first.  That should be a unisex class, basic money management and how to be a frugal shopper (and of course hurt the economy as a result)

Maybe something like,  A mid-teen's guide to BASICS of money management such as opening a savings and checking acount,, Money markets,  CD's, what interest rates mean,  what principle means... etc.   Prepare a kid that age for having his/her own bank account, and learning how to buy stuff.

I took wrestling in gym class instead of dance. I love to dance, but am a tom boy at heart. I had 3 older brothers and hated being stereotyped being a girl. Guys don't always do everything better. I kicked some serious butt until the administration said girls could only wrestle girls.  LMAO

Yes Steven, Paul was in the Coast Guard and he knows how to sew very well...that's why he does all the sewing in this household.  :D

I agree wholeheartedly with your ideas about learning money management at an early age.  It is so crucial to have a basic foundation on how to juggle your money and stay within your budget.   I wish I'd started saving earlier when I was single, but all I did was blow my entire paycheck at the mall every week.  I'm trying to teach my daughter that there is no money tree you can keep plucking.  It's very hard sometimes, though!!

Right O Luly, Steven - finances are important. I think teaching investing and stock trading in addition to personal finance is also important - especially at an early age.

Oh and a reminder this thread is Crazy Font Madness.... we can continue to say whatever but lets' get this crazy gray font issue resolved too.
