If you are a singer or a KJ what would you rather see?
Once in a while I'll have people ask me why I don't sit down or have a chair on stage to sit because I'm standing for so many hours. I personally don't think I can do my job as well sitting down. Plus when I hear music I need to move. (ants in my pants) Now I'm not saying everyone should be like me and that sitting a few minutes a night will hamper being a good KJ. But I can't even imagine sitting all night.

I have back trouble & sometimes have to sit while working, but when it feels fine I will stand the entire night - maybe sitting for a few minutes here & there just to rest the feet.

I think it depends too how visible you are to the audience. I am right next to the singers on stage, so if i'm sitting it is very obvious. I had surgery a couple of years ago and had to sit through a couple of nights because it was to painful to stand. I felt like I stuck out like a sore thumb and looked a bit akward trying to work my controls from a chair.

Most of mine is sitting although I run a very fast paced and high energy show. With a snake I am in the audience and accessible to all. I do try to navigate the crowd and personally greet all the singers and bar regulars time permitting.

There is no stage area and I do have a BAR STOOL by me for use by myself or the singers ( Some people actually like to sit down while singing some ballads ?)
I stand 85% of the time and like Lonnie only sit a few minutes here and there.
I think a KJ thats sits MOST of the time looks LAZY ?

when I kjd, I always felt weird sitting down. I prefered to be in motion. I'm usually walking the room between singers (after eqin' the singer and music) to check on other singers, to check sound levels, to get a drink, etc... every now and then I'd sit down for a few moments... but inevitably, that's when someone would walk up to the kj area and try to hand in a slip. I've even seen folks try to adjust the rotation for me! !

I think as a rule, you should stand, professionally speaking. Of course, if you can't stand for a reason such as injury...that's a different story.

Wow, if you changed the title of this thread to

Gawd, but my mind is in the gutter this morning.
On a serious note.... I think a KJ should do both. As well as share a drink or two with the customers, and take their turns out on the dance floor. You get a more responsive crowd if you try to be a part of them;) I don't see any need at all to require yourself to stand the whole night, just for professionalism.
Sorry Babs, I shouldn't a been scalping your thread. Shame on me... I'll quit now;) I just couldn't resist.

I mostly sit, I think. When I’m forced to be right near the singer, I feel I should be tucked a bit out of the way, it’s the singer who needs to be seen. Also, my table isn’t real high, and it’s easier to sit and work things. And… I’m too old to be standing for hours,(50 going on 80).

Okay...I debated with myself whether I would post to this one or not, but, what the heck, you only live twice...yes...I said twice.
Back in 1995, the day before Thanksgiving, we got into a near fatal car accident. No one died and we were the lead story on the news (holiday travel and all) but, I wasn't wearing my seatbelt (yes...it's a law) and I was crushed between the steering wheel and the door. I broke nearly every bone on the left side of my body from the ribs to my thigh, severed my diaphragm, etc., etc., etc.. And it hurt (but I was totally digging the morphine drip!!)...anyways...it took about eight months to recover enough to walk with the aid of a cane (traction, wheelchair, walker, then cane) so I couldn't run shows. When I could walk with a cane, I started back to work. And I STOOD through the show. The first company I worked for had a strict rule of NO SITTING and we adopted that rule because we felt it was a good one. Now, admittedly, I could have sat down at the shows during the rest of my recovery and I really don't think anyone would have cared. The customers were just happy to have me back alive and, sort of, well.
Now, that wasn't a "poor me" story meant for sympathy or anything. I am fully recovered now and my doctor actually uses karaoke as therapy for severed diaphragms. (it's pretty common in car wrecks..who knew???) He thought I would never sing again, but, as the diaphragm is just another muscle, I worked it and my voice is stronger than ever. My doctor said he wrote a medical journal entry on it, but I have yet to find or read it. So, no sympathy needed. I'm better than fine. It took about a year and a half to fully recover and I can tell you when the weather is going to change better than any radar system, but I am okay. AND I am lots of fun in airports! BEEEEEEEP!
The REASON I tell this story is because it is what I tell my KJs when they want to sit on a stool because they're tired or because their feet hurt. If they are injured, I allow them to sit if they feel they absolutely HAVE to run the show that night. If they have any other excuse, I send in a different KJ that night.
I have been to, I think, nine different shows where the KJ sat through the whole show. ALL of them were BORING. There was no energy on the stage, so there was no energy in the crowd. Now, if YOU can run an exciting show sitting on a stool, more power to you, but I have never seen one.

I have been to karaoke shows where i have seen kj's both stand and sit, i and the audience never gave it a second thought, believe me. If your show stinks, it's gonna stink sitting down, or standing up. I have arthritis i can't even stand long enough to sing one three minute song. Never had anyone come up to me yet telling me i look lazy, they can sure have my knees, and ankles, then maybe i will look like i'm doing something i 'spose.....
