johnbaum- it is not Sound Choice's rule. It is the federal copyright laws that say you cannot format shift. If you shift your "cheap" karaoke to another format (MP3...or what-not) you are still breaking the law. And Sound Choice pays to use the song, but they own the copyright to THEIR version of it. Just as the "cheap" karaoke manufacturers own the copyright to THEIR version of it. The publishers still own the copyright to the song, but they allow the manufacturers to use the song to make their own version of it. Sound Choice pays for a license to make a version of the song. So, if you don't want to violate anyone's copyright, you will have to stop buying EVERYONE'S discs. And, if you don't use Sound Choice at your shows at all...well...I can't imagine you have too many happy customers. There are certain manufacturers that are a MUST if you want to have good music. Sound Choice is just one of them. Not to mention, there are MANY songs that are ONLY available on Sound Choice.

This is actually a funny statement as SC discs are now just as affordable as any other disc manu of quality now days.

How is one to know if the 'cheap' manus have paid for ANY rights to reproduce.  Many of them don't even have contact info.  Try to find Backstage, Sweet Georgia Brown, All Hits actual address, phone number or anything else - willing to bet since they all produce songs that aren't available through major manus, that they aren't paying for licensing in the first place.  Nu-Tech was busted years ago for taking music directly from other manus & making it their own.
Real manus have contact info where you can get hold of them directly.

Never use sound choice in any of my show. Never seen sound choice disc in my life. And there are 100s of thousand of songs that sound choice does not have. I know.

As a chief eng of a tv station and owner of a cb shop I have been busted  and have had various dealings with the FCC I have had relationships with the FBI and told OSHA to go to hell.. You kids on here are in a fantasy world Is there anybody here that has bombed a real business or had a successful business? Im beginning to wonder if you have been in more than 6 bars. You sit here and ramble on with your extreme BS and dont have a clue what real life or success is about.. You sit here and argue about whether it is black or white There are an infinite amount of colors Quit using your bumper sticker mentality and telling everybody else how to live. We are tir.ed of it.

Do you wonder why you have bombers in schools and terrorists? Take your greedy ..man made laws and put them where the sun dont shine. This thread is just another indication of how the extremists have totally ruined this country. You people are so extreme with your attitudes You are insane.. You are dysfunctional. If you really are karaoke hosts you are very limited buy your negativity and poor public relation capabilites. I have drank shine from illegal stills and bought booze from bootleggers.

You kids want to tell everybody how to live what prejudices to have an d how to thinkl..Let me tell you what this old man grew up in America when America was America. Take your liberal BS and shove it More taxes and more and more laws Have you solved one problem yet?n Or have you created a totally socialistic society.

I will defend a working man or woman that  is trying to make a few dollars and not be on the welfare system.. Till the day I die.. Now if your opinion is more important than somebody making a few dollars and feeding their kids then you are sick sick sick And nobody here has any respect for you Put it where the sun dont shine....
And if there is somebody down the street making $75 a night and feeding their kids I will support them Get off your high horse you are hypocrits in the first degree.

So, do the Disc Manufacturers offer MP3+G versions of their CGG's for legal use? I didn't think so. Are you telling me that the entire MP3 market is Illegal. Not just the fact that they may be scalped but simply because they are computer based MP3's? Come on now.... you guys are a bit paranoid.

Here's a solution.... those companies who complain the most that we are not destroying and replacing our discs, we just stop purchasing their products. Seems pretty simple to me.... No, I have a real hard time as well with a company telling me what I can and can't do with something that they don't even own themselves. It seems to me the Writers should be the ones making the biggest stink about all the black copies its the ones that make the CD's that you hear complaining the most....

It seems the whole argument that Revenge and timberlea makes here is "they gave me this ticket book, and told me to wtite tickets to anyone who went over the speed limit" To Them the speed limit is 65. If you are doing 65 1/5 MPH, you are going to rot in Jail for it. On to the next victim......................

following the war on Drugs, there was the war on Karaoke...........

These wars are only caused by the ability to confiscate and collect  large sums of cash. It aint gonna happen here.

Lonman -

Sweet Georgia Brown discs are made by:
SWEET GEORGIA BROWN RECORDS
2220 Route 176, Prarie Grove, IL 60012
phone: (800) 397-5559 | fax: (815) 788-1665

All Hits were manufactured by:
Class Act Music Productions
Narragansett, RI
(which I THINK might have been reborn as American Karaoke Supply. I have to actually check that out, but it was too early to call when I wrote this. All Hits are no longer made, but this company is in the same location and is producing new karaoke discs.)

Backstage is manufactured by:
Nutech Entertainment Inc
3841 Hayvenhurst Drive
Encino, CA 91436-3600
Phone: 818-907-6278

karyoker - you are just proof that age does not necessarily bring wisdom. I will NOT support someone feeding their kids while doing something illegal and hurting legitimate businesses. If you do, then YOU put it where the sun don't shine. I am really sorry that the world didn't turn out the way you wanted it to. Maybe if old timers like you followed the laws, it would have set a good example for the younguns out there...OH wait...you want to hang marshals and tell the FBI to go to hell....I guess YOU DID set an example for lawbreaking kids and school bombers. Hmmm...maybe YOU are the one who is SICK SICK SICK. Give it some thought.

johnbaum - the manufactures DO own the copyright. What part of "they own THEIR version" did you not get? And if you read the manufacturers' letters, you would see that it IS the publishers that forbid the format shifting which is why NO manufacturer has the right to allow you to copy their music into your computer.

And finally, neo - WTF? Are you just an idiot? What is your problem? You want to say something, back it up. Or were those the only words you know how to spell and make into a sentence?

Typical woman?

WTF?

Elvis, it's statements like that one that TRULY hurt the debate process. If you don't have any points to make, a baseless accusation is the way to go?

Give me a break!

I may not agree with Revenge's statements, and I don't agree with her tactics, however she's got every right to her stance, and she backs it up with the law as it's written today.

Let's stop the personal attacks... if you want to discuss this topic with decency and respect, then let's talk about it. Otherwise I recommend the mods to lock it/delete it until people can act like civilized beings!

Sheesh!

EELVIS- Obviously, you have not been actually paying attention or you just weren't listening...hmmm..typical male. The law is NOT my opinion. The law is the law. And, as for my last post, did I ASK for your respect? I do not need nor want the respect of people too stupid to read and understand a simple law especially when it has been spelled out for you. As I said before, my MAIN goal is to protect some poor newbie KJ from taking advice from people who never bothered to check and see if what they were doing was illegal. I never said you have to "share my opinion." Some of you already DO share my opinion. I opine that we SHOULD be able to use computers to run shows. Hmmm...no one is arguing THAT, now are they? And I further opine that there should be a way to do that without breaking any laws. Hmmmm.....nope...don't see any problem with THAT, do you? I also opine that people are going to do what they are going to do whether it is against the law or not. Still with me...I thought so. Now, the FACTS about the law you can look up in the library of congress. I don't care if you agree with them or not. As I said, I just don't want to see your stupidity cause a new KJ or a club owner to suffer. ANYONE on the outside looking in on this topic can discern for themselves who makes sense here and who is grasping at straws trying to make something ILLEGAL into something LEGAL. If I help just ONE new KJ to NOT commit a crime or get just ONE venue to fire a computer KJ and hire a legitimate operator, then I've done what I set out to do. I don't care if you like it. I don't care if you respect it. At least I know when I run my shows this week, I am not going to have to worry about being busted. Not many of you can say that, at this point, can you?
Ever heard the phrase, 'If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem'? Well...YOU certainly are NOT part of the solution. You WANT to use your computer, but you don't WANT anyone to do anything about people running illegal shows because then YOU cannot continue to commit the crime you are committing. At this point, you are DEFINITELY part of the problem. Once again, typical male.

And...thank you, knightshow. And to all of you other males posting on this topic, I don't think there is a typical anything, male or female. Everyone is different. I was being facetious and I think most of you can recognize that. If you can't, please just ignore it. It was aimed DIRECTLY at EELVIS and not at the rest of you.

Wrong!!!!!!!!!!!!

This BS that you are posting is your opinion, and it isnt statement of fact of the law. It is your interpretation of the law. and since you are not a Supreme court justice, that and $2.00 will buy you a cappicuno at the local starbucks.

The law as written,  is very vague in the interpretations. The experts at IP justice have given an opinion based on their years of Knowlege in Intellectual property law.
The only thing your opinion is based on is ?????????...............

Your Opinion is just that......... an opinion. nothing Else.

Have fun trying Brainwashing people into believing your opinion is the law.

I am weary of this Boring thread.......

THIS is FROM the IP Justice site:
TRUTH: Copyright law clearly allows a person to copy their lawfully acquired CDG for private non-commercial use.
NOW...what part of THAT differs from what YOU say is MY opinion?? It says FOR NON-COMMERCIAL USE. It doesn't say you can use it COMMERCIALLY. IN FACT, it clearly says NON-COMMERCIAL. When they begin to talk about format or space shifting, they start using words and phrases like should be, probably and unlikely. NOWHERE do they state that it is legal to do it. They say basically that they THINK a judge will say it's okay. They were paid to come up with an answer that would make their benefactor mostly right and they did. But if you REALLY read what they say, they tell you it is illegal and they THINK you might get away with it. And THAT is what you are basing YOUR business and someone ELSE'S liquor license on? And if you think the law is vague, then you have not read it. It tells you EXACTLY what is illegal and WHO can benefit from "fair use" and what penalties you face if you break the law. Can't you read? And, once again, the law is NOT my opinion. I have never written a law and, as I am not a congresswoman nor very interested in government from the "being it" point of view, I likely never will. The law is there. Read it. If you can't read it, get a "typical woman" to interpret it for you.
