Hi guys!!
My mom wants me to enter a contest back home. They have odd rules though. You must bring your own music without any vocals on it at all, not even backup vocals. Plus they must be copy right proven.
Of course all I have is CDGs with backups on the tracks. Where can I find what I am looking for?
Thanks

Well, I'm not as "educated" as some others out here BUT, here's my thoughts on this: 1. If you don't HAVE to have the words plastered on a screen ( like I do....senior thing) you could just get a copy of the song done INSTRUMENTAL ONLY. 2. OR, I think "JUST TRACKS"...Priddis (?) might be worth looking into. BTW, what song/s are you looking for...exactly. Not sure about those ideas...just trying to throw some your way......GOOD LUCK!!

Priddis ( www.priddis.com) recorded SOME of their tracks without background vocals. They even tell you if a song has background vocals.

or try midi Babs...if you play them thru a decent sound canvas or keyboard and record on the fly as a wave it would sound okay especially if the midi had been decently created. My Me & Mrs Jones midi is cd quality

I told you priddis.com Ms. Babs.......$1.49 for music download only($5 for +G)
You know Dolly Parton made and first recorded " I will always love you"......her version is a bit different than W.H. version, which you do so very well......I have Dolly's original cut if you'd like to hear how it goes.....it's much shorter(3:00)....and it's Country......... .........it will say Background:no on the Priddis site....jj

You were right Johnny about Priddis - I was just putting some feelers out for other suggestions. Thank you everybody.
My next question:
I need suggestions for country songs done by women that will show case ones vocals. I am not that familiar with country. I was concidering "All Jacked Up".

What is "copy right proven?" You have to provide proof that you have secured the right to perform and record that song?

I know - wierd huh?
I figure they mean the music that is being used has been purchased from a company who has paid copy right to produce it. If Priddis is a legal form of music purchase I should be okay. If someone brings in a home made disc from a download they'd need a receipt to back up the purchase. Just a guess.

That's a song the crowds really like Babs, and fun to sing as well. I dunno if you'd ever find a version with no background vox at all though.
Hey, why don't you just pick some of your favs and sub them, and ask people here to give their honest opinion on what would be the best choice for you? I've seen other people do that here when they were gonna enter a contest:)

http://www.countryshowdown.com/rules.asp This is a link to the offical rules. Doesn't look like you need to worry about copyright unless you're doing original music for which you are supposed to get extra points.

I concur with EWF.....only need to prove original material.....only recorded backing during prelims.......doesn't say if they have to be original store bought tape or cd.....also calls for minimal background vocals......not 0 background vocals.....probably doesn't want any vocals that can be construed as a melody guide to the singer......also contestant must be of Good Character........looks like I'll have to wait to put those pictures of you on my website...  LMAO LMAO LMAO LMAO LMAO LMAO LMAO ......ps......call the local station and ask them what they'll allow.....they'd probably ok a track before hand

Thank you, thank you, Thank you
I just found out the finals will be held when I am on vacation. I am going to wait until their next contest this year. It will be rock. Now that is more my style. Mom is disappointed, but I am thrilled to wait and be able to do music I am comfortable with instead.

Oh don't be such a Babinski.... ....there's the local preliminaries, the State finals, then the final finals(of which I take it you allude to).....I know you got the looks, the talent, and that little wiggle you do on stage... .....but a lot of unforseen things can keep you from the finals("she could go all the way"). Most importantly.......Don't Disappoint Your Mother. Hey, you can always pass the baton at any stage of the competition. There's a prelim in Valpo, and I'm going to try to get our young friend(the one that's in the Region Idol) to enter it. The Indiana prelim ends up in the Illinois state competition..........I think I know what your real problem is........bawk, bawk...bawk, bawk, bawk......
Whoever wants Babs to enter the contest raise your hand.....

It's no big thing Johnny. I can wait. Don't you think I'm better suited to do rock than country anyway. I promised mom I'd get in the next contest and I will. I'm not expecting anything to come of it when I do. There are tons of great singers out there. I don't believe I'm anything special. I know my place. Don't get me wrong - I can hold my own, but I don't believe I have a unique sound or a special appeal. Just a small town girl with a big voice. LMAO

There a a few sites on the 'net that create professional backing tracks, some with, some without backing vocals. Many of these are MIDI sites which to my ears always sound inferior to those recorded using real instruments. Either way, I think that these tracks are nearly always superior to any karaoke track I have heard, and usually they have no fade out endings, which is always a plus for live singing. In my humble opinion, if I was ever to enter a competition, I would want to use the best backing track in order to enhance the performance. I have a number of backing tracks from a few different sites, but I think the best ones I have are from Jeff Daniels and Alan McPike.
Alan McPike specialises in standards, and his site is called standardstrax.co.uk. (not sure if it's that domain or .com)
I can't remember the exact site name for Jeff Daniels, but you will find it if you Google "Jeff Daniels backing tracks".
Both these sites are in the UK, and they are fully licenced for public performance.
