Hi,
I am currently using Karafun, but find it a little unstable.  I've tried the Powerkaraoke trial software and found that more unstable.  Vanbasco is reliable and stable + easy to use but only works with midi files (as far as I know)

Any advice or suggestions?
Ian

Sounds like the problem is your computer not the software.  Try Winamp with the CDG plug-in.

actually, he's got a point. Winamp with the plug in is so low on the cpu performance that I highly recommend it.

Another option is the clubdjpro software. There's the lite version and the pro version... both are a dual-format with player A and player B... I like that kind of setup for easy transistion from one singer to the next.

But for home use, enqueing in Winamp is about as easy as you get!

Sounds like your computer is more than adequate.  Check to see what else might be running in the background & close out any unnecessary programs?

No reason to switch to Vista, too many bugs in it right now - heard more horror stories than compliments.

expecially UPGRADING to vista. Buying a pc with it already installed (not upgraded) is the least problem involving (fewer bugs)... until you look at specific software you want to run on it.

There just aren't enough applications that have converted to using Vista to make it a (must have) for me. I still run on win2kpro (for now)!

Do Not Switch To Vista!!!!!!!!!  And if you buy a new comp with it save your recovery discs for later and install your XP for now....

Me too, I never actually saw a reason to switch to XP myself, although I may go there before I go to Vista.

I am repeating myself.  have you used RoxBox (i think i have this right)?  I saw a KJ using it and it was cool, I  thought it might work for me.  Why do you like MTU video hoster so much?  Do you think RoxBox is good?  thanks - jim

I am not lonman but RoxBox is a good winamp frontend. It allows you to access your dj songs in the same manner as your karaoke by having two databases available at the same time.  RoxBox has two players built in so that you can set one player for karaoke and the other for dj. when you hit play on the karaoke it will fade over to karaoke from the dj player and if you have the dj player set to autoplay then as soon as the karaoke graphic disappears the dj music comes back. If you want a different song on the dj just check the auto remove box.

There is a better frontend called AutoKDJ that uses the winamp media library as it's control center.  check out www.autokdj.com to see what it is all about.  The best part of this plugin is that if you're not happy with it you are not out any money as the plugin is free and includes the mp3+G plugin, PAcemaker 2.1 and the AutoKDJ plugin. The only item you need to run it is a copy of winamp.

I agree with Lonman and others about NOT upgrading to Vista.  My friend updated two weeks ago and is going nuts trying to update and fix programs that stopped working.

I don't plan to upgrade until I get a new PC down the road sometime.

As for software, I am very happy with the hosting software that comes with the CAVS J-199 Premier system.  Of course, that means new hardware.  But I much prefer the CAVS environment over a laptop environment.

witnessed a cavs unit crash with a fatal error at at least one show. I'll stick with my pc as I feel it's more flexable than the cavs will ever be.

I've tried Winamp with CDG plugin, it shows the tracks on CDGs, but will not play them.
Karafun works OK in some ways but is very difficult to record (keeps changing settings on Audio Console, my soundcard's software mixer) and reacts oddly to the volume input by the mike.

PowerKaraoke works OK for a couple of minutes then stops responding (but works OK with Audio Console)

Dart Karaoke does not recognise my DVD drives.

Frustrating, because, when things work, the potential is there.

I don't mind paying for software, IF I CAN FIND SOMTHING THAT WORKS!

I like the sound better than mp3 based players.  It's an all in one program, it does the ripping too, no need for an extra player.  Also creates 1 single file for playback as opposed to 2 separate files.  It also works on my older machine as well - 1Ghz processor & 256 mb ram.
I persoanlly didn't care for RoxBox, seemed like a clumsy program IMO.  The only other program that looked very interesting to me was CompuHost, otherwise I tried them all (demo modes) and none of them impressed me except Hoster & CH.

hotglove :  Either every one of those applications has something wrong with it or the problem is your computer.

Are you trying to play directly from disc? If so you need the CDG DIsk plug in which costs $24 to register or it won't play more than 60 seconds of the song.

are you playing off the cdg, or off the ripped tracks on the hard drive?

There are TWO winamp plugins... one for playing off the cdrom, and the other for the mp3+g files.
