I have a wedding gig in two weeks. It is one of my best friends and I have known about it for a while...in fact I was so looking forward to doing it...that was until...I discover her husband to be is related to country music royalty here in NZ and they will be attending and singing at the wedding ceremony, then me taking over at the wedding breakfast and dance. Bruddy hell I dont know many country songs, so any suggestions are gratefully accepted, I need to learn a few. Lemme tell you what I already know
MCC he thinks he'll keep her, down at the twist n shout
brooks n dunn bootscootin boogy, texas I dont want a lover, umm dunno who sings it but its call if you ever have forever in mind, by the time I get to phoenix (campbell) Bonnie Raitt's love me like a man and runnaway (both more blues than country) quite a few croce and patsy cline.
Help I need more!!!

Not to be a smart as to, but there is some validity in Steve's post.  Why do you have to sing country???  Is there some law in NZ that states if a country music star attends a singing event, only country music can be played/sang?

Quit worring so much!!!!!!!

Did someone say country?  Now you're speakin' my language.. LOL

What kinda songs you lookin' for?  Right off the top of my head I think you would sound awesome singing:

Deana Carter - We Danced Anyway & Strawberry Wine

Anything Tanya Tucker, but I'm fond of Two Sparrows In A Hurricane & If It Don't Come Easy

Garth Brooks - Shameless

George Strait - Baby Your Baby

Jo Dee Messina - My Give A D*mn's Busted

Geeze I could go on and on...with your voice I think you could pull off dang near anything... LOL

It just wouldn't be a wedding without the famous Tammy Wynette song

D*I*V*O*R*C*E ... Image

Tammy is right, you'll kick booty no matter what you sing! Hey, how 'bout a nice romantic Keith Urban song? I can't name one..... but I know he's got a few good ones.

Oh hey, how 'bout 'Save a Horse Ride a Cowboy'...   ok I'm leaving....

 Have fun!

hahaha Sheree, that might be a tad close to the bone this is her third time round ;-)
actually Tammy yeah gendre benders would be cool, my vocals are so bruddy tired at present that if I am to sound convincing at all it will have to be low register and rockin lol
I grabbed a listen to those songs you suggested and none actually leap out and say sing me...which they are gonna have to do if I am to get off my butt and learn new stuff in 10 days...it will be wednesday before I can sing a note again, I totally wore my voice out saturday when they begged another set so I can barely whisper at present
one that does take my fancy is trisha yearwoods georgia rain, wow what a pretty song

In all seriousness,  :Country: can be as ambiguous a term as "Rock" when used in the "international" context.  What is NZ country-style preference today ?  Might not be traditional heartland (United States) type country music. If you are referring to songs such as Glen Campells' (Who incidently has a gorgeous voice, however he is international 60's pop) if referring to his "Tales of the Everyday Housewife" Album with "Wichita Lineman", and the Title song "Tales of the Everyday Housewife". All depends.    A safe bet of course is always "Skynyrd", and Funkadelics "Standing on the verge" album..  Great wedding country stuff  LOL.  Not sure if Campbell, Williams, and a few of the Pop-country 60's smash hits would qualify among "Country Connoisseurs" today however.   Here's a better bet.  Ask them. Let them know you are aware of how vast "country-style" which MIGHT include country-rock (which is a totally different animal) can be, and although you are provide entertainment, you want to provide them with THEIR preferences.  Country or home styles in Ireland and Scotland (as well as many similar areas) will likely be Celtic-ballad style, might be a bowed pslatry, Hammared Dulcimer, limberjack, spoons, autoharp, and guitar with Roger Whittaker yodeling in the background.

Don't listen to Kaplan's rambling.  Here's a much better idea for you Vicki.

http://www.nzcountrymusic.org.nz/

It's important to know geographically how country & folk styles differ. How they are bridged as well.  Usually country (ballad) has it's roots in real stories and heritage.  Differ's continent to continent.

ADDED IN:
  (It's me again Kappy btw)

Similarly John Denver was 60's & 70's mainstream pop-40 hit radio.  Not sure if "Country royalty" would consider that style tasteful over there Vicki.  It's a tough call FEW of us can answer (You are 1/2 way across the world), ALthough a Western Country (I think, but maybe not),  How can an American person tell you what your nations country music preference is with accuracy ? Few of us have even been to NZ.  If these individuals love country and they are royalty try to get close to the source, ASK  :worship:

lol I guess I could do that when he arrives here 3 days before the wedding but by then it will be too late. This guy has been entertainer of the year several times and always features strongly in country music circles, something I dont normally mix in. His father (now in his 80s) is a music teacher of some distinction although retired now. I guess what it boils down to is I shall feel slightly out of my comfort zone. My friend Toni (the bride) asked if I would consider doing a duet with Brendan...but that has to be a no because there is nothing that I know that would be suitable. He is singing at the church, I am doing the wedding breakfast and the dance. But he is using my pa equipment. I guess while staying true to what I do best, I wanted to acknowledge the fact that the bride & groom have their roots in country by learning some material to mix in with what I normally do.

Some of my favorite fun/rockin' country tunes are:

Montgomery Gentry - H*ll Yeah

Tracy Byrd - Watermelon Crawl

Phil Vassar - I'll Take That as a Yes

Jake Owen - Yeehaw

Brooks & Dunn - Boot Scootin' Boogie

Chris Ledoux - Cadillac Ranch

Confederate Railroad - Queen of Memphis & Trashy Women

Little Texas - Kick a Little

Etc etc etc....hehe  LOL

I think you might have just the voice for "Something in red" a Lori Morgan tune from a few years ago but done right it stops the whole room in its tracks every time.  And you have to do Waltz across Texas just in case someone wants to waltz.  Not a lot of three quarter time anything being written anymore.
