The Friday night show I'm doing has a guest singer that might be a little anal retentive. I just picked up the show as the KJ before me packed his rig and left without much notice. This guest wanted to start doing the show there but has no equipment, very few cdg's and didn't make a good enough attempt at getting the required stuff to do a show. I got the show and now he nitpicks it to the club owner, who basically ignores him.
I use a larger than normal request slip. The form is printed a little larger for both the customer to see and for me to see. I want them to have just as much room on the form so all of the info they get from the book is the right info.
Anyway, last friday night, Leon got some forms from one of the books and went to the bar and borrowed a pair of scissors. He cut the forms down to the size of the last KJ and filled out about a dozen of them. When he brought them to me he told me "I expect these returned to me at the end of the night". I guess the bar wouldn't let him borrow the scissors but once.
Anyway here's my question. I printed a dozen request forms that cover an entire sheet of paper each for Leon as I know he'll be there this evening. The crowd he hangs around with will get quite a laugh out of it and I'm known to cut up quite alot. I'm kind of in a jam here as he left before the show was over last Friday and I gave the cut down versions to the bartender to give to him. The chances of him getting them back are slim to none and he'll whine about that. But the oversized forms might really tick him off.
This thread is purely satirical as there is no telling how I'm going to handle this. I usually play the game one inning at a time. And I do like to have fun.
How would you folks handle a situation like this?
By the way, it is widely known this guy collects womens panties and stores them in ziplock bags for "sniffing" purposes, so he's kind of a goofball. How could I not have fun with him?
Sorry if I offended any other panty sniffers.
Any suggestions?

Ignore him. The bar owner does. He's disruptive. If you let him control this he'll try to control something else. He is sour grapes for not getting the gig himself. Its your show--u run it YOUR WAY.

I certainly hope you pre-printed Leon in the name slot on the slips....

Yeah, I agree...if you give in too much to this guy then he is going to keep taking any ground he can get. There is a difference between showing him common courtesy and letting him push you around with unreasonable requests. Sounds like to him it is a power play thing. Whether you see it or not, he is going to keep making unreasonable requests and make you do things "his way" to prove that he is in control.
I have plenty of people like this, and frankly, you have to just give them common courtesy until they cross the line then set them straight in a very reasonable manner when they are try to pull your strings. Otherwise, they are just going to keep making more and more unreasonable demands until it start adversely affecting your show and other people, and by then it will be out of control!!
In the case of the slips, I personally would have copied his tiny slips back onto your standard slips and then kept them in my possession to have them available for him next time you ran into him. It is reasonable for him to request you to hold onto his slips from week to week (I keep an index card box with alphabetical dividers and do this for all of my regular singers). What is unreasonable is #1 for him to cut your slips in half because he doesn't like them and #2 expect you to go to great lengths to track him down to return his slips when he should have collected them himself when he was leaving.
Next week he might be printing his songs on cocktail napkins or asking you to just fill out his slips for him. Next thing you know, he will be EXPECTING you put him and all of his songs into the rotation the second he walks in the door.
But the bottom line is that it is YOUR show and you have to lay down the minimum rules that people must meet in order to participate. If all of these rules are reasonable (like having the courtesy to fill out one of your request slips), then it is certainly proper for you to deny service to anyone who refuses to follow them!!

When he said he expected the slips back, I would have handed them to him right then and the crooned in my best Elvis voice " Don't want you, don't need you, don't love you...." This guy has got to go. Sooner or later. You might as well toss him now.

How big is larger than normal request slips out of curiosity? When I print mine, I have 8 slips per page which equates to 4 1/4" x 2 3/4" slips. Unless you have some sort of specific way that you keep your slips that he cut them down, why worry about it if the pertinent info is still ON the slip such as name, song number, song title. As far as giving him back the slips at the end of the night, go for it, but it's his responsibility to collect them, you shouldn't have to find him - unless you happen to be going over there for some reason, you could bring them & drop them on his table. I have many many people that collect their slips at the end of the night - saves me paper printing fees - I used to keep slips on file for everyone, but over time the filing system got to be too huge, so now they take care of their own.

I did karaoke at a bar in Austin, there they used request slips the size of 1/4 sheet of paper. I asked the kj about it, and he puts the slips between the disks, and stacks them in rotation order, playing off the top. Makes sense, as it saves the disks from scratching.

I print 5 request slips per page and yes that seems a little large. But I also use them as CDG coasters placing them under the disc in rotation to protect the disc and still have room to view some of the contents of the slip, mainly the name to keep track of the rotation. I may get some 3X5 cards and offer them to guests for request forms but they will have to be responsible for keeping up with them at the end of the night. Just seems strange to me. I've participated in many a karoake show as a guest and I never thought I had a problem filling out the request forms. Then again, I will usually like to search a songbook really well and find songs I've not done in awhile.
Anyway, thanks so much for all your advice. Gotta get the equipment loaded up and get ready for tonights show. Hope everyone's rotation is abundant, you see a smile on the owners face and they get your eggs cooked right at the Waffle House at the end of the night.
Let's all have some fun!!! :oh yeah: :dancin: :worship:

5 slips per page, yeah that's quite a bit larger than your average slips. Printing costs must be pretty cheap for you to be able to do mass quantities at that size. 3x5 card would be a little more manageable I would think.
Like I said, we get many that keep their slips. They go through books & write down songs they'd like to try but maybe not that night & put them in their stack so they don't forget. Or they'll hear a song they didn't know a title or artist for & write it down with the name & a lyric they might remember so they don't forget again. They may do a song they don't want to do anymore & put it in a no more pile.
Like I said, it don't bother me a bit as they aren't just taking a bunch & filling out slips only to have them go to waste because they used them as memo pads, or filled out way more than they know they can do in a night, or ???? At least this way they get recycled so to speak & no they don't continually do the same songs over & over. Often times they may just hand me a little stack & tell me to pick as the night needs. One couple that comes in regularly probably have over 300 filled out request slips between them alone & they are doing new songs all the time. They also print out their own slips from my website so they aren't actually even using the slips I have in the club.
CDG coasters? Don't you have a couple of jewel cases you can stick your loose discs in while they are getting ready?

Well, there's your solution then.
Spray some " essence of panties" perfume on your regular slips, and he'll be happy using them- and the complaints will stop:)
Nah. I'd tell him "sorry, it's my show, these are the song slips I choose". I wouldn't cater to a nitpicker about something like that.

They don't like our slips, they can go somewhere else. They want them back then they can ask for them, not a problem.

You have to put your foot down immediately with this guy. Tell him it's his responsibility to come and pick up his slips at the end of the night.
He gives us panty sniffers a bad name! Sniff!

I use a sheet of paper set up like a sign it sheet or a sing in sheet in this case . Those little slips just seem too easy to get lost Does anybody else use this method ?
