OK, so the most problems in systems usually happens in the cables.  Bad ends, shorts, broken, ect.... and thoes problems can be mostly attributed to the way a cable is wrapped up on stored.  I've been to a few more shows, been "on-the-road" for the last couple weeks, and it kills me to see how "PRO" KJs/DJs wrap up there cables.  95% of the time it is the old wrap it up over the arm trick.  THat is one of the WORST ways to wrap and store a cable.  Sure it may look good from the outside, but you are twisting the wires inside.  Eventually they will become so taught, they will break, or pull away from the connections in the plug.


Now for the PROPER way to wrap up a cable....

Take the 2 ends and place them in one hand.  Fin the middle of the cable, and place that in the same hand as the 2 ends (you just 1/2ed and then 1/4ed the cable).  Keep 1/2ing the cable till it is in a managable/storable length.  My 50' speaker cables end up about 2 feet long.

Now you have 2 choices.....
1. Tie the bundle in a knot, and you are done
OR
2. Get some of the fancy cable clamps (shown below) nd skip the knot and use it to secure your bundle toghter.

NOW THE FUN PART....unpacking the cables....
IF you did it right, you should be able to grab the 2 ends in one hand, remove the clamp or untie the knot, and give the bundle a toss.  DON'T let go of the ends.  IF it is done right, the cable should streach out and NO TANGELS.

Perhaps when I get home I will take some photos if you all can't finger it out.

BTW...Home users can do this too, it works on extension cords too!

And thoe cable clamps (pictured below) came in a variety of sizes.  The work great for tidying up the mess of cables behind your PC or entertainment center!

Very good advice, Twan.  I use velcro straps to tie them.  Pull the velcro and toss to open.   The straps are available at CVS for 2-3 bucks.  If not, buy sticky back velcro strips and stick =em back to back.  A bit of electrical tape at the ends for pull points...

Velcro straps work great.  I get mine at Home Depot.  Good place for Gaffer's tape too.

Twan I made up a couple of 100' speaker cables and a kid coiled them and then next time he went to unroll one and tangled it into a fishing line mess  I coulda killed him....

Best option : Buy monster cables, when they break take them back WOOF!!!!!

NO-ONE TOUCHES MY CABLES!! and since someone elses cable blew a channel on my mixer I use none but mine either. Out of the goodness of my heart I allowed the NZ army band to use my mixer and speakers at a luncheon concert pre xmas and the cable must have been faulty cos the next thing I knew one channel was popping and lights were flashing it was the most horrendous noise. I turned off the mixer and when turned back on it had a hum on that channel.
I used a completely different setup for the evening concert, brought in my peavy mixer amp and my passive speakers and the same thing happened. Replaced the cord and all was fine...but of course I had to wear the cost of fixing my mixer
