I have a CD-G,VCD, DVD player and I have a bunch of CDs. My daughter prefers the CD format since the CDs allow her to sing with the voice version, too.
But...I like the ease of use of the Microphone with Song Chip hardware.
Does anyone have experience using this equipment? I was looking into the Entertech Magic Mic versus the Leadsinger Mic or some other company like Wow Magic Sing Magic Microphone.
Can you download songs to the microphone, too?

Those are MIDI based tracks. Adding more songs means adding buying new chips.

In all likelihood, you assume correctly. This is quite possibly the lowest quality karaoke one can buy. If people are serious enough about karaoke to find a forum and post, they probably are serious enough to want better quality.
If the tone of the above seems disrespectful, it's directed at the product, not at you.
Somewhere out there you can find a program called Van Basco's Karaoke player for your computer that contains around 70,000 midi karaoke songs. Same quality as the chip mic. Costs something like 5 or 10 bucks. The lyrics are displayed on your computer screen.
If you hook a mic up to an amp you can sing along.....?

I was given a leadsinger karaoke mic a year and a half ago. Within 3 months, I purchased a CAV's DVD system.
In my opinion the leadsinger is best suited for kids.
I've since given the leadsinger to a friend who has a 5 year old daughter who loves it. In my opinion, the music is painful, and the graphics, very distracting.
Imagine singing a poor midi version of "Desparado" with the graphic of a tractor, the golden gate bridge or a barn in the background.
While the leadsinger does offer instant key change, tempo adjustment, minimal set up and an entertaining rating system...I believe it's geared toward kids.
I wish you luck in your investigation

Vicky,
You mentioned the "CAVS mic".
You may be thinking that the CAVs unit is a handheld all-in-one-karaoke system. Just to clarify, it isn't.
Whatever the case, the mic that came with the CAVs is satisfactory for use with the CAVs DVD unit, which we use only for karaoke...not recording. Higher end mics are used for recording with a new M-Audio soundcard.
Some opinions may not consider the CAVS DVD karaoke system as "state of the art", however, I consider it to be a giant step above the leadsinger all in one karaoke mic, if you're looking for home karaoke use.
Just wondering... what is more 'state-of-the-art' than scdg's and cdg disks?

I would be more impressed if the scdgs all played Elaine. I purchased a cavs player 203Gusb for the hotel to hire out. Its tinny and crap in my opinion, and the scdg discs that came with it dont tend to play in the higher numbers, the system locks up and has to be rebooted...it is very very slow too. the external usb that is plugged in to the back is inclined to skip every so often as well.
The concept is good the product isnt and the mic that came with it is tinnier than the $15 ones I bought from the local electric store. does that answer your question?

I am not impressed at all with the CAVS units either.
I had very bad luck with my CAVS 103G, which was my first attempt to buy a CDG player. It basically sucked in all ways possible. It never reliably read the CDGs. Then the remote died and I went through some rigamarole to get a universal remote working with it. Finally the unit itself died completely. It now sits on my shelf, dead -- now that I think about it the trash pickup comes today. I have moved on, and I simply don't need it anymore. Good riddance.

I already have a DVD/VCD/CD-G player.
I have something like 50 CD-Gs, so far. One thing I thought was nice was that Amazon has many used versions of what I was looking for.
---
I just thought it might be fun to have something where all songs are on one system, as opposed to rummaging through the CD Case.
