hiya, the purists will say no, but I like them   there are some great jazz and blues songs on em that no other brand will cover. I am not a kj, I get paid to sing and I use cdg as backing, many of them are sgb

Yes, they are worth it if you don't have much of a collection.

In general, the lyrics are bad, bad, bad. To the point of comical in some cases (try looking at the ones for "I Want You To Want Me" if you want a chuckle).

But the music tracks go from good to outstanding. Several of the songs I consider to be the best available anywhere. Some of the songs they have are unique, too, not found anywhere else.

You should pay at most $100 or so for the full collection, maybe even less (89.33 at Karaoke.com right now). At that price, for over a thousand songs, it is a great value. (If you spend the same amount of money on SoundChoice, you get 60-75 songs. Choose carefully!)

You will have some people tell you "get SoundChoice, quality always counts". That may even be correct for a KJ. But if you are on a budget like I am, as a home user who generates no revenue, SGB is hard to beat. It was a great buy for me.

If you are on a budget and don't have a music library to speak of, I would hop right over to karaoke.com and buy every DK disk they have in their 3 for 7 sale, as well as the SGB collection.

If you buy all of the DK disks like I have over time, that and the SGB will give you 150+ disks with over 2000 unique songs by over a thousand artists, and with many of the tracks being very good. I have about 300 more disks now, too, with a fair amount of Sound Choice and Chartbuster, and I still find myself using the DK and SGB songs.

i bought them last year for the first set I own.  I think they are pretty good.  But there are some songs that suck.  Just delete the ones you hate, you will still end up with quite a few good songs.  soundchoice is much better, but the good soundchoice discs are usually 10 - 15 $ or more.

You can probably find a SGB collection for 89$ for the 70disc collection.  that is only about a buck a disc, it's hard to beat that.  soundchoice discs aren't THAT much better.  look on ebay for them, make sure you read the feedback on the person you are buying them from so you don't get copies.  look in the ebay BUYITNOW store for them, I think that would be your best bet.  they may be 110$ shipped.

Thank you for your replies. That really helps me. I am just starting out and I bought a Karaoke Hits set off ebay, 14 discs, 275 songs, not very good quality. Also I bought Party Time Karaoke, Oldies pak 2. So that is why I am looking for a large set at a reasonable price. Thank you all for your replies.  ken312hd

Grab em!  Its 66 discs of songs---about 1076 tunes altogether. Ive seen the set listed for as low aS $69.99.  Just leave off your song list the ones you dont like and you will have a killer home core set. Then order the BACKSTAGE set-73 discs Ive seen for 89.99. Again it will give u a nice PHAT assortment for your home set. Then shop various karaoke supply websites and check thier ON-SALE and CLEARANCE tables and u can get some REALLY GOOD DEALS to expand your home assortment while keeping the cost WAY WAY DOWN. SC is the "BESt" IN MOST CASES, but at 26.95 a whack or $450 for the bricks, its out of MY price range. And I will only pay it for certain select discs.

You can also make some good scores off

www.karaoke.com

when they have sales and clearances.

Those are the two main places I purchase from.

Thank you all for your help. This site is awesome! After your suggestions I deceided to go ahead and purchase the 66 cdg set. For those that are interested I found it on sale at Ace Karaoke ebay express for $60.00 plus shipping, that seems like a real bargain. Thanks again to everybody, I love this site!

Are you serious. ABSOLUTELY not, I feel you should always buy the best CDGs that you can at the best price. It is best to just hold out and buy the Better Brands of Karaoke CDGs like Sound Choice, PHM, Chartbuster, etc. The reason I say this is because you will just waste money buying cheap brands now, and then replace them later, and I think most of us have experienced that.

My advise, check sites like ebay.com, circleofdeals.com and karaoke.com when they have sales. On ebay.com watch the shipping though, on circleofdeals.com they sell all Karaoke for $5 each of better brands with cheap or free shipping but they don't have everything, lastly sites like karaoke.com acekaraoke.com etc., when they have sales. Basically take your time and get some deals on better stuff, or just replace the cheap stuff later, you will see.

To me, a good quality set for an inexpensive price would be Supercore.

I had about 20 discs given to me, most are not useable in my opinion.  I listed 2 discs out of that lot & threw the rest away - wouldn't have felt right trying to sell them & don't want them coming back into the club to be played!

you can buy soundchoice discs for less than 5$ each, but the song selection is nowhere near as good as the SGB in my opinion.  the SC songs are high quality, but they are slow movers which contain less sought-after music.  my suggestion would be to buy SGB, buy backstage, then go to circleofdeals and see if you like any of the SC discs they have.  even though they cost more, at about 5$ a disc, the music is top notch and a cheap method to increase your songbase.

Where can you buy and pick the titles of Sound Choice CDGs for less than $5 each delivered? I seem and purchased many from eBay for less than $5 but the shipping was $4.95 to $6.95. Of course I've seen MANY assortments, but you can't pick the titles so that is a waste of time and money in my opinion, unless you are a Store Owner that is going to re-sale them.

I roger this as well, that was actually my first set purchase. You can get the 2006 set for $64, and they have an excellent all-genre assortment of 320 or so songs.

What nobodys bothered to tell you is that some of the songs in the SGB collection are the very same versions used by other CDG collections. Which makes me laugh when folks immediately put them down when they probably have the very same songs by another vendor in their current collection. This purist mentality is really starting to become irritating. If you're starting out and just want some filler, then yes go for it. While you're at it, pick up the Supercore, the Dangerous, the All Maxx series, they're all good starter sets, especially for a home setup. Now on the other hand, if you were to ever decide to take you're performances public, then yes by all means work your way up to a better series such as Soundchoice and Chartbuster and other various and again much debated series. But these sets will be more than adequate(and much more affordable) and help you to get a good foundation and appreciation for what's good and not good as far as different vendors go. Remember it's about having fun. You'll eventually learn your way around the various labels and be a bit more particular in the future, but for right now, just have fun with it.

Nuff said,
James

I think Supercore is a good value.  I saw the SGB "toolbox", or something like that - 195 songs, for $12.99 no shipping/tax.  For home use, I think a nice deal.

Definately go pick up the DANGEROUS set if you like 90s rock. This set is on par quality-wise with the likes of chartbuster and contains many songs that you can't find anywhere else (mostly semi-deep cuts of 90s rock). I have seen this 13 disc set for as little as $16 on EBay, and I would gladly pay triple that if I had it to do over.

The Supercore set is pretty weak on rock songs. It seems like they normalize their tracks, which some would think would be a good thing, but once you listen to some of the rock songs that SHOULD have some really HOT, energetic frequencies coming from the cymbols, lead guitar, etc., they seem to just blend into the mix.

However, Supercore does do a great job with thier oldies in particular and, suprisingly, their hip-hop stuff. The country is sorta hit or miss. For the price, however, the set is certainly worth picking up!!

And listen to the guy who was talking about re-branding when you are building your starter set!! There are lots of sets out there that are the EXACT same songs from the EXACT same manufacturer, but they brand them under different names as a marketing gimmic. A basic rule to follow is if one set has 26 discs and another set also has 26 discs, they are probably the same set under different branding, so don't buy both!!!!!

dangerous collection may be the best money I have spent so far, 20 bucks for about 150 songs that are really good, hard to find; semi-deep is a good term for them.    Think "low spark of high healed boys" by Traffic type stuff.
