Sounds great folks. Glad y'all are sticking to it. Chuck that's pretty cool you are already noticing a change in vocal range. Amazing! It will be real interesting to see how big of a difference that will end up making.

I haven't updated on this in a little while so here goes...
Day 22 still not smoking.. Not me, Not Rich.. But this is my thread and I don't wanna talk about him today...
After having a minor little reaction to the medication that the doctor prescribed to me to stop smoking I had to quit taking it.. I can tell you is not a good idea to stop taking this stuff cold turkey.. At least for me it wasn't...
After a 3 day trip without ever leaving the house it is finally out of my system and I feel much better than I have in years..
Went singing last night with Meep70... Went to a new place that had an old KJ friend of his working... She does a great show....She made me feel very welcome....
I have always wanted to sing Broken Wing by Martina McBride, But I never tried it brcause I knew just singing along with the song in the car I would lose my breath and couldn't finish..
I did the song last night....The KJ helped me out in a couple of places by holding (litterally) diaphragm while I sang....But anyway, I had plenty of breathe and I nailed the song.. Or so everyone told me..I am so excited about all the songs I will be able to sing now.... I also did Total Eclipse of the heart (the DK version) And I nailed it too without getting winded....I used to sing this one and by the time I got to the end I would be gasping for air... Not any more...
So life is good, Just got home from the grocery store, loaded up on healthier snacks and starting next week I am going to start utilizing my Rec center membership and work out a few days a week.... I hope to get rid of some of my existing flab and turn in into hot old lady muscle...(and I don't want any of you saying I look fine, I am very out of shape, I just don't happen to be obese).....
So that is the life of Sharon Not smoking update.. Back to you Bill in the newsroom.....

It's great not to have to smoke anymore, eh?
After a month, you shouldn't ever have to smoke again if you don't want to. Please do remember that one cigarette is the same as a dozen cartons -- you will be buying the dozen cartons eventually.
I am recovering from surgery to repair the deviated septum that became obvious once I quit. With luck I will be able to breathe through my nose for the first time in 35 years! I will be a *breathing machine*!!!
Again, congrats on the not smoking. I am so happy I quit too -- it is worth it.

I think it happened after my grandmother died of emphysema. But my Dad just made up his mind and that was it. The mind is very powerful if you decide to use it. It helps to get mad and retaliate against your habit thereby digging in your heels.
I remember after they quit, they both couldn't believe how good and different food tasted. It seems this aspect amazed them. Sometime after that I believe is when we bought Julia Child's 'The French Chef' and started indulging in finer cuisine.
Good luck to you Sharon and Rich. You can do it if you really want it. Take it one day at a time. I wish you good health, and Bon Appetit.
Bill
My grandmother died of emphysema also Bill. That was something I never knew about you and your family. What a shame. (of course she didn't die directly of the disease, it brings on more problems with heart disease and furthers other complications as a rule) -Jeff
Yeah smoking is not a good thing. My brother in law just went to the ER about a month ago because he suddenly couldn't breathe and so he had my sister call EMS until the "fit" passed to some extent and he could breathe well enough to have my sister cancel the call. She took him to the ER and he leter found out he has emphysema. He went on steroids, breathing treatments and whatever else they gave him and now, unfortunately, he got better enough to start smoking again. That's one strong addiction. The best way to avoid it is to never start. The fact that people sue the cigarette companies I think is a copout to some extent. It's like, here I am after smoking for 30 years and now I'm dying..pity me. The info has been out there for years. There ain't any vitamins in them things. They're just plain bad. If you choose to get rolling with them, you will probably wind up hooked. Sad that this ever became an "in thing" to begin with. Oh well. See ya Bill, ol' son!

Yeah, that stuff and getting asthma lately is why I started worrying about singing at karaoke in smoky bars. You almost always have to be a smoker to get emphysema, but all that second hand smoke probably qualifies. A year or two ago I had a number of asthma attacks so bad I went to the ER. Of couse if you tell them shortness of breath then all they check is your heart. I was trying to tell them it was my asthma. After lots of checking out they say...'there's nothing wrong with your heart'. But then I went to ER and never got treated for asthma. What a bunch of morons. This will happen everytime. For all I know I could have emphysema (knock on wood). It seems to be aggravated and caused by allergies and maybe that darn smoke from the burning forests in Mexico and South America.
They used to give me lots of steroids for all those breathing issues too, but it is a double edged sword. Taking lots of steroids will rocket up your blood sugar and can make you diabetic. I was on for months because of poison ivy, and later because of asthma. All those steroids have caused harm to me. Not sure how much. The doctors don't tell you this stuff. They just say 'here, take this'.

Things are good... I did very well until I was sitting in a casino last week and I really wanted one.. Rich bought me an entire pack.. I felt obligated to smoke them all.. It took me a week to smoke them all and now I am on day 5 of quitting again...I felt like crap when I was smoking.. A lot of guilt and I felt like I let my family down and myself down. I could already feel my lung capacity getting smaller...
Rich went back to smoking but he doesn't do it around me or in the house or in the car or at work...
Gigi.. is not so much of a smoker... she will smoke for a couple of weeks or a month and then just stop... She has gone years without and then will smoke for a weekend and stop... She doesn't understand why it is so hard for the rest of us to quit....So right now she is not smoking... however she did say that she has gained her sense of smell back sense Chuck quit... She said she didn't realize how much the second hand smoke was affecting her....
Chuck....Well he is in the middle of a bit of a slip up... He is still committed to quitting and should be back on track very soon
None of us got really cranky during our quit but we did stay away from places were people smoke... We just got together this past weekend and sang at Chuck and Gigi's house.. It was a lot of fun....
If Fact, we will be meeting someone new, that used to come to this site all the time this Friday... We are excited about that.....

Best of luck to all of you with the continual struggle! That's one battle I'm glad I don't have. It's got to be about the toughest to quit with all the everyday cues.

Ruthie would love to quit, and I want to help her as much as I can without being a nag!

So i have had a couple of rough weeks.. I lost my job.. and some other things.. And I slipped and started smoking again.. But as Chuck said somewhere he is going to keep on quitting until he stops starting...
So alas I have set a new quit date for April 29th....
Again that you all for your support.. I really do believe that quitting nicotine is as hard if not harder than heroin....
In the words of Whitesnake... Here I go again....
Sharon
P.S. My parents are still not smoking though and I am very proud of them. 45 years of smoking and they are taking no prisoners and not looking back....

I like this !
I must now steal it, wait about a year, and make it MINE  I shall rip it off, and save it for a rainy day when I feel compelled to appear creative :worship: because it's the kind of person I am :dancin:

Question everything when dealing with doctors. People laugh when i talk of my operations. I have had the right and have elected to stay awake during my surgeries. Argueing with the doctors during my surgeries has met with harsh language by them.
Question them and demand.

I wouldn't have the guts to do that Big Jimmy ! I'd end up with the type of surgeon that'd cut my stomach open, and end up walking out've the Operating Room in a huff saying something like; Quote: "Here hot-shot, you think you know so much here's the scalpel, over there are the sutures, and here's the stethoscope, and artery clamps... Cut your own appendix out, I can't deal with this"

I like that expression Sharon! It applies to so many addictions, bad habits and behavior modification attempts.
