AVOID:First LEAVE THE BOTTLED WATER AT HOME. Support your favorite Karaoke Host by BUYING something at the venue, especially if you want that venue to continue karaoke. ( See, Eric? I do WANT them to do that-just won't throw them out if they don't)
Also leave your serious side and your ego at home. It's about having a great time, not sounding great.
BRING: Spending money (see above).
A smile and good humor
Patience.
If you've been practicing at home, and you have manucturers' discs ( not copies), by all means bring them. A good host will allow you to use the versions that you've been practicing with.

Please elaborate.....he's using a computer, a Cavs, or copies(1/1) of cdgs he owns, but my one copy of the cdg I own is a no, no? Biggest and deepest scratches on my original cdgs came from bringing them out to have a KJ play them....I'll just take my bottled water, and go some where else... ![LMAO LMAO](./images/smilies/emot-LMAO.gif) ....he faces no legal ramifications from my copied disk.......I'm responsible. If it's played on a cdg player, no virus can be transmitted.........enlighten me, oh wise one..... ![LMAO LMAO](./images/smilies/emot-LMAO.gif)

Actually that's not the fact, if the kj plays your burned disc, the kj is responsible if by chance they are caught. Which is why many kj's refuse to play burned discs that & the fact that they don't know if you actually own the original or just downloaded for free.

Nobody really knows for sure what the facts are....why do we pretend? My copied disk, my foul, and if it were a illegal to play it by the kj, the odds of somebody comming in and enforcing it are nil. They'd be more interested in what the KJ has on his hard drive, and in what formatt.......I'm gonna start wearing wading boots when I come to these forums..... ![LMAO LMAO](./images/smilies/emot-LMAO.gif) ...I'm a fairly good Bull Shirter, myself....but it's always a real treat to come here and listen to the masters of the art..... ![LMAO LMAO](./images/smilies/emot-LMAO.gif) thank you for making my day...... ![Smile :)](./images/smilies/icon_smile.gif)

Sometimes they don't have the songs, or they got it on a SGB(I wouldn't own one) cdg.... ![lol lol](./images/smilies/emot-LOL.gif) ,,,,sometimes their stuff is way out of sink.....I like to hand them my custom(and I mean my.... ![lol lol](./images/smilies/emot-LOL.gif) ) cdg with 20 to 25 songs on it, and tell them, I have another disk in my coat pocket, in case I run out of songs for the night..... ![LMAO LMAO](./images/smilies/emot-LMAO.gif) ....you should see their faces, especially when there's 30 or 40 singers......... ![Very Happy :D](./images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif) ......some of them just can't take a joke..... ![LOL LOL](./images/smilies/emot-LOL.gif)

Billy D:
Please don't come to my show. Ever.... No one running a legimate show is going to play one of your burned disks because we can't tell where it came from. The only KJs who would are those who are already running pirated tracks. You can sing my tracks, you can bring in a legal disk, or you can bu&&er off. In reading your posts in this thread, I think it would be best for all concerned if you just skipped the first two.

Though known for my sandals and sage-like look, I ain't that wise....
Personally, I agree with you. I WILL play a copied disc, unless I can SEE that it is damaged. Of course, I may have the same version ( My books include mfrs. disc number) However, some won't, for fear ( baseless or not) of just what you wrote. Legal problems, player damage, whatever. Their gear, their rules....
Funny thing. When I go to someone else's show, I almost ALWAYS bring my own discs. If the show is computerized, and the songbook doesn't give mfr. numbers, than I will only use my discs. If they don't have a CDG player, I'm tail lights..

I have now been to dozens of shows, probably more like a hundred different ones. I have yet to find a KJ who won't play a burned disk if they have the equipment.
I have legal copies of all the songs I use, of course. I burn them for several reasons:
1. I can fit my whole repertoire on 5 or 6 disks instead of scores of them.
2. I don't risk the original in an unknown CD player.
3. I can burn the key change on to the disk.
#3 is important to me, as I have few songs I sing straight up.
If a lot of KJs refused to play my disks, I suppose I would carry around a few originals. But it has never happened, not even close.

Just my opinion, but your view is in the minority, and it's KJ attitudes like yours that are killing karaoke. Your view ranks right up there with charging people to sing....you continue to bite the hands that feed you.....no singers, no job. There are no entities that are going to bust you for playing a customers copy of a disk, and you are just playing a karaoke god. And please, tell me where your show is, so I will never accidently show up at it...... ![LMAO LMAO](./images/smilies/emot-LMAO.gif)

Billy D, I have come across some KJs that do not allow burned disks in their gigs. This is for the exact reason that you are saying does not happen. Copywrite violations ARE policed! some of these KJ's have either had first hand experience and been warned, or have aquaintances who have been fined for playing copied CDGs. Contrary to your attitude, I respect the KJ's decision (after all, it IS their business) and just carry on having an enjoyable night. I would say that, rather than killing karaoke, this attitude is encouraging a better quality show, as competition will force the KJs to provide better service (ie update their libraries). Have you ever asked a KJ if they could get a particular copy of a CDG that they do not have? I have known KJs who are happy to accomodate their customers in this way.

First let me say, it is the customers' show, and they just run it, if it were their show, they would be the only one singing.
Next, let me add, they are using some form of copies of cdgs(if they are using all original cdgs, I will concede my argument to these kjs), who are they to question the fact that I own the original cdg? Have they brought the original cdgs from every song they have(I think not), if not, why should I have to bring mine. If they announce it's my disk, and I acknowledge the fact in front of witnesses, I have accepted all responsibility for the legality of my copy. If I bring in a disk, and it plays poorly, I can understand a kj refusing to play one of mine in the future, but give me a chance to prove myself, and I probably would become a regular. I spend money, I sing ok, and I don't cause any trouble. Actually, I have never had anyone refuse to play my copies, and I have had nothing but awesome treatment, everywhere I've been, and that has included many States. Guess that's why I'm so surprised by this attitude. I don't mean to offend anyone, but the attitude seems more like "do what I say, not what I do".....I like to treat others, in a manner, that I would like to be treated.....good luck, and God bless, no matter how you see this... ![Smile :)](./images/smilies/icon_smile.gif)

I've been pretty lucky so far that all of my folks that bring their own disc bring the originals. My problem is, they always have them stored in some type of binder that usually ends up scratching the disc from them taking them in and out of the sleeves.
My solution: I always keep extra cd cases on hand. When they bring up a disc, the first thing I do is turn it over and look at it, and show them the condition that it's in, that way there's not a question of if the damage was done on my end. I put the disc in the case.
When they're finished, I give them the disc in the case and tell them if they are going to use their own disc for the evening, please bring them up in the disc holder, so I don't have to worry about them lying about in the open. I've even had to clean certain disc before playing them. Taking this extra step is also a good way to break the ice and disarm some of the Rock/Country star wannabes, who think they're ultra cool by bringing their own disc. Odds are, I already have the song they're wanting to sing anyway. And remember when I say wannabes, I'm referring to a certain few not everyone who brings their own disc. Remember they are the hobbyist, you are the professional(hopefully), you have to set the standard of the show. If you get a large number of folks who bring their own disc on a regular basis, take note and possibly invest into a custom disc, so you always have it on hand, trust me, it will make a good impression on your folks if they know that you're willing to take the extra step and try and get the music they want to sing. Chances are they're going to sing the same songs from week to week anyway. Boring I know, but it's just part of what we do.
Nuff said,
James
