I'm compiling of list I'm planning to give to friends who are karaoke newbies of what to bring and what not to bring to karaoke. Here's what I have so fair. Other suggestions?
What To Bring
list of your fave songs
Breath mints or breath gum for intimate duets
Plenty of $$$ to tip the KJ
Bottled water
Your best smiley face
Your business cards, with stage name and contact info
Aspirin, for bad singing (not yours)
A pen for song requests, for when the one at the bar disappears
What to Avoid
Garlic
Coffee, red wine, chewing tobacco or anything that discolors your mouth region
Cigarettes (unless you want to sound like Tom Waits) are very BAD for your voice
Songs about death, dying, or disease
thanks everyone! KS members are always so helpful!
xoxo

Bringing bottled water to a club that is charging for drinks is wrong. You could BUY bottled water once there - provided they sell it, otherwise go with what they sell. Most clubs around here prohibit any kind of outside beverages regardless of what it is.

sorry, i didn't intend that to mean bring your own h2o instead of buying bottled water at the bar. My idea was to remind people to keep properly hydrated at all times since water is soothing for a singing throat. Will take that out.
And I did not mean to offend, I apologize. Thanks!

No problem, I understand about keeping fully hydrated, however, drink the water the bar offers....

Also avoid the "dedicating this song to my (enter family member/friend) who (enter fatal disease, death or something terrible here)" in the middle of a happening crowd, rotation & general fun. We're sorry about your relative or whatever, however, we don't want to have the mood of the club brought down because of it!!!!!!

I'm gonna take this back on topic.. What to bring to Karaoke...
A bunch of friends...
A great sense of humor...
What to avoid...
Any kind of creamy drinks or drinks with milk products... They may feel good when you drink them but they will cause you to have extra mucus in your throat...It can be kinda gross....
Any good show is going to have everything you need to sing Karaoke....You should only have to bring yourself....Now hard core Karaoke Junkies like us... That is a totally different story.... .. I could take me days to list everything I need to take with me to a show... Heck I went to Lonman's show once and I printed his entire song book from online and studied it for a month before the show so that I could pick the songs I thought I might want to sing that night...Junkie??? Me??? Maybe.. But I do have lots of fun!!!!

I wish they had that kind of sense in NYC. I'll still go to plenty of places and want to burn my smelly clothes afterwards!
Wow Isis, avoiding dairy drinks because of mucus is a good one. No wonder the doctors say not to drink dairy when you have a cold!

Raina, every bar that I have been into in NYC has not allowed smoking.... this is due to State law. Surely if there are bars you are going to that allow smoking, they are breaking the law?

While it's against the law, some bars still allow it. There was a karaoke place I went to last weekend that had a smoking room upstairs, which made everyone's clothes smell!

Raina, No bar in NYC that allowed smoking would get my patronage. Just as no bar in Alberta that allows smoking does!
