Hello, I have been reading a lot of post and some of them come close to going where I need to but don't quite get there.

I am putting together a karaoke system for my wife and I want it to be a quality system.  She will have this for use in the house most of the time but we do get invited to some parties etc. where they like to sing but there karaoke equipment sucks.

Here is what I am looking for, system that can be set up in the house most of the time but on those few occasions we can load it up and take along and it will be a quality system in a bigger or outdoor setting.  

We had a dj business at one time and offered karaoke with it but sold the business and equipment,

jvc karaoke player
behringer mix board
mackie 450's for sound and a few other items.

We use otsdj for our dj software and I see they have just added a karaoke add on to it so I will be using it to play the karaoke through so it will be on computer.

Any ideas on getting a great sound but keeping the system so it is not to big to pack around when we need to?

I would say the most PORTABLE systems are the PASSPORT system (or similars from other manus)

Thanks for answering and if you don't mind another question, have you used this set up or have you been around one and heard the sound of the system?  After a little reading it says they can be used with Fender wireless stuff...I am wondering if that elimates shures etc..

My wife sings and she is good at it and thus the need for a good system.  No, I don't sing, we had a T-shirt made for me when we had our dj/karaoke equipment and it said,"Set Up, Shut Up and Tear down".  Oh well,

Your profile does not indicate what state you reside in but Most major cities have a Guitar Center where you can go and test the system for sound.

As far as wireless goes, any wireless system will work on this unit as this unit has XLR inputs. Fender does market a wireless system but it is just to accessorize the system. Alot of folks purchase these for small hotel room meetings, trainings, seminars etc.  I have heard the Passport systems and they have a good sound and plenty of features for what you are looking for. The portability of these units are excellent.

You can also look at the Peavy Escort and the Yamaha Stage Pass systems that fit in this category too.

The Fender Passport sounds like an AM radio. I would look at the yamaha stage pass or a pair of quality powered speakers.

The problem is two fold - You want something that can be set up in the house and also portable enough to move for some parties and outside venues.
If its small and portable ..it won't have the best sound (usually)
I have heard good things about the Fender Passport just for someone like you
BUT --You need to get the Deluxe with the added power and better speakers.

Anything else would be better but require a little more "space " and set up

A Powered Mixer and some 12" speakers would be a great choice
Yamaha or even Behringer PMX2000 and some small 12" speakers
This would give you what you want for Home or small parties.

Well there is a lot to think about but Lonman might have hit the nail on the head, without the jvc player and a computer instead. Will actually have to get a mix board with special effects to have reverb etc. to the mics.  

I live in Winston, Or and the closest place to really go look at a lot of equipment would be Eugene.

Plus the fact that you already know what that system will do, sound like & you are familiar with it - you didn't state the model of the mixer, but if it didn't have the effects built in, you can certainly get a version that does!  Plus you can order those online.

Tell me I dont get out enough, but the mackie 450's
and a single sub are the best small system I've heard.

i've heard the setup (jvc, behringer, 450s) and it's fine.  very good setup for the money spent.

I have the PD250 deluxe and it sounds GREAT!! nothing like an AM radio.  The passports also have an adapter (you have to buy seperately) that allows you to power the PA with a car battery.  Nice option for outside events if power isn't available. The way the whole system is designed with the speakes attaching to the power head makes it easy to transport and keeps the speakers and controls protected when traveling.

actually I have heard a passport in action too and it sure didnt sound like an AM radio. It was used by a high school...both indoors and out and it was great for the price. The teacher who had bought it had had a lot of experience as he had been bandmaster of the NZ Army Band before taking up his position as music director for the school. He had tested it rigorously and was happy with the results. We nearly bought one ourselves as our very first PA, but opted to go for something a little gruntier

I too have heard a passport system in person, and nothing like an AM raido.  It is used for our local dance team when they do public performances.   When I saw it, it was used in the school gym, small for the venue, but it worked.  For small portable karaoke system, it fits the bill.

I would do it by buying a pair of LM series speakers from Carvin.  Check out this link:

With the money you will save by buying the LM series, you can buy a mixer and an effects rack.

You can not compare Carvin Speakers to RCF that is like comparing a Yugo to a BMW.

The Passport  heard was in a Bar for a trivia night, it had no bass and a ton of mid range. The guy even let me play with the eq, to me it sounded like an AM radio.
