"Urban legend" has it that RIAA lost a big case here in FL. and never came back.  Anybody know any specifics?

Lonman, what gives you the impression there will be more cases in court regarding illegal karaoke operations?  Is KAPA making a comeback?  I know of a couple KJs in my area that play dirty music, as a second question to all ... If you know of a KJ in your area that is using illegal music, do you say something to someone, or leave them to their own devices?
SC and Stellar are cracking down in Phoenix right now... based on their stance and threats... there's some threads on here about that

EElvis, Please don't confuse the use of audio tracks, which the riaa has been involved with for years and karaoke tracks with the visual. The riaa until just recently hasn't had anything to to with karaoke. And didn't want anything to do with it if at all possible, according to John Langly who used to be the head of investigations for the LA office and since has been put in charge of the Atlanta office.
The copyright laws that are used for karaoke are different than the ones for audio recordings.  Legal karaoke producers have to acquire a synch copyright from the publisher that has total controll over granting that license. Which is why karaoke does NOT fall under the fair use laws. audio recordings do not reguire this copyright and as long as you pay the licensing fee are fair game. Which is why some of the original karaoke producers have been sued and are no longer in business. They too thought karaoke would be fair use. The graghics or video are the krux of the matter.
For those of you that think just stellar and SC going after piracy I guess you haven't checked out the CB site. They also have a reporting form, that according to them goes directly to their attorney's

Elvis,

Please don't be confused by the posting just prior to mine.  You understand, I am sure, the difference between Karaoke and pure audio copyrights.  I know your posting provided us insights into related legal issues when it comes to pleading a case and the importance of, not just the law, but interpretation of the law, precedents and application of the law.
Thank you again.

AND FOR THE BENEFIT OF AT LEAST ONE OTHER POSTER, PLEASE, DON'T ANYONE VIEW WHAT I SAY AS LEGAL ADVISE.  I PROVIDE NO ADVISE AND I AM NOT A LAWYER.  AND WE SHOULD NOT BE CAVALIER ABOUT WHAT IS A VERY SERIOUS MATTER!

I thought it would be interesting reading in light of all the copyright mudslinging lately.

Thanks
