The foil/label side is deteriorating.      My discs are not being abused.   They are in the bedroom in a wooden dresser.    

I have kept these masters in the bedroom and I only use copies at my shows.     Lately it seems like everytime I need to replace a copy the master looks like swiss cheese if you hold it up to the light.

My advice to anyone that has the technology to put their karaoke discs on a hard drive is, do it now.      Take the master right out of the jewel case and put it on the HD to preserve it.    We are not talking about the legalities right now, I'm just talking about saving your investment.     As you know from reading the other posts, once a disc is sold out, they are gone forever.    I wish I had the technology 14 years ago.

Cds were suppose to last forever when they first announced them.   But since they are made of aluminium and aluminium is subject to corrosion/oxidation from the atmosphere, they will not last forever.

The only way I see a disc lasting forever is if the foil is made of gold, instead of aluminium.   $$$$$$$$$$$$

It will play but skips and glitches because of the missing foil/information.

And how old were those bad discs?

Exactly.  In 16 years, we've only had to replace two dics for one song on each disc.  They were KJTool discs that were used practically every night of the week.  They were probably at least 11 years old.

I don't know what you use to copy your discs, but I use a Microboards QuicDisc duplicator.  This is a free standing unit with built in firmware.  It has the capability of remastering. Take a disc with say, skips,. You can scan it, then copy in safe (x1) mode from the saved scan, eliminating the skip. It has even saved a cracked disc.

  In effect,my backups ARE masters, and there are no paper labels to peel. I print separate paper labels and store them in the disc pouch. I bring my factory labeled discs to my shows ( also good to have in case the KP come in to inspect). When one of these wear out or are damaged (very rare), I replace them with copy (marked backup disc).  I also save my jewel case labels to prove they were bought legally.

  BTW- I store the backups in books, not cases. This keeps atmospheric exposure to a minimum.

The KP I like it... but they better come with a court order... If not they can go play in a corner... I don't give a damn who they think they are. Besides I won't buy or use PHM or SC disks anymore. I've replaced all of the songs with other versions. Funny how none of my singers miss them either.

In a related line, I started burning my VHS tape collection over to DVD....160 down, lord knows how many to go.  I'd say CD disc life is pretty long however...geez, remember vinyl records?

Hey dont knock Vynil!!  Was just playing my Joe Jackson record tonight(Night & day).  Only problem Ive ever had with the vynil is the drive belt snapped on my Technics turntable---AFTER 25 YRS OF SERVICE.  Ill still take vynil over CD's. They just seem to have a warmer, fuller tone to them. And the OLD RCVER I have it hooked to even has a scratch eliminator switch that takes out all the pops, clicks and scratch noises! Cant beat that!!

I read recently that karaoke disks are not
manufactured to as high a standard as ordinary music cd's.
(If requested I will find the sourse) i.e. the foil.
Could anyone say why that is...

Most likely cost issues.  The manus send their products out to get pressed/duplicated, so it could be what the pressers choose to use as well.

  Right on about a court order. NOBODY slows down my show.  As for SC and PHM:

I always thought was over-hyped and over-priced anyway.  I've run into some true clinkers on SC, while Zoom is at least a match for them.  PHM was NEVER a top end mfr. in my book. I have very few of their discs....

Actually the FBI (US) or the RCMP (Canada) wouldn't need a warrant to confiscate or sieze your copies or harddrive at a show in a bar or other public venue as it would be "plain sight".  And in Canada they have started doing that.

  Don't know about Canada, but in the US theymust show just cause. In my case, as posted, I use only mfr. labeled discs. They would have none. But the people in question were not government agencies, but artist groups. They have no jurisdiction of their own, and would need a writ to enlist a law agency's help. On their own they can go spit in their hat.....
