    What was the first album you bought ?



   In the early-mid60's the first 45 rpm I bought was "Pictures of Matchstick Men"  Status Quo.

I'm running 3 electronic keyboards stereo out-----> Boss 6 channel stereo mixer---> Soundtech quikmix 6 for smaller room use..  Is the problem I am noticing with channel panning that the Quikmix will not allow me stereo features so I'd be better off running out've a single channel on the keyboards rather than attempt stereo function with a mono PA head ?

Question;

Asking this question is a long shot, but: Have you noticed any general trends of what happens when second tenors try to change to falsettos?

Two other little questions: Do you know any Earth Wind and Fire songs in which Phillip Bailey did NOT sing falsetto? I'm trying to get an idea of what was his classification.

The second is concerning George Duke (to whom I'm listening as I type): Do you happen to have his "Greatest Hits" CD? I am listening to a couple of songs on there particularly carefully ("Starting Again" and "Shine On") and can't tell if he would be classified as a tenor or a male soprano. Or would it be better to say that he was singing falsetto?

Sorry if these questions seemed like long shots. But I know that you consistently give good answers, and so that's why I contacted you.

Answer;

Yes, I remember you.  I think you're just thinking too hard.  Unless the male is a castrati (which is no longer practiced as of the mid 20th century).  Counter-Tenor is the phrase for men who have higher voices.  Generally, in pop music, you're not going to go beyond the Counter-Tenor or "rock" tenor classification.  Upon doing some research, we still do have modern day "sopranists" who are men who just naturally have high voices, but are not castrati.  But the important thing to note here, is that these classifications are mainly used in the Classical Music realm.  There are several notes in my range that I can sing in chest, but choose to sing in head voice (falsetto) if it's what the song calls for.  Lately, since Phillip Bailey has taken over leading EWF in concert, he does a lot in his regular chest voice.  

I do not, currently have any of George Dukes albums, though I'm thinking of making a purchase sometime in the near future.  However, I think you're really splitting hairs here with "how" to categorize him.  He's got a really large range, so it's difficult to put someone in a square hole, with such round edges.  I do not know how they categorize him in the real world, but I call him a tenor.

I know this doesn't pinpoint it for you, but you have to realize that people are tested for their "general" voice range.  What they end up being able to do as they progress, doesn't change the fact that the voice range you tested for will usually be the one that sticks with you.  I've been called a mezzo-soprano, alto and contralto, so it's just ambiguous.  Sorry if this doesn't help much.

So, to me it appears that what this individual is stating, is that Phillip Bailley in real is a male tenor with a strong Falsetto.

I need to do some research,  Cat Stevens used a lot of symbolism in his lyrics.  But "Yellow Delanie" doesn't exist I don't think..  In fact a search of that phrase brings me to THIS song only..

In music people do just that often-times as a creative means of coping with certain situations.  James Taylor did just that in "Fire and Rain" too.   Suzanne was a girl he knew when hospitalized for mental illness...

That's true!  Fire And Rain was based on his real life story in a mental hospital.  I think JT had severe depression. I didn't realize he used heroin for a period of time and that was a main reason for his split with Carly Simon later on.

Here's something I just heard on the Acoustic Storm radio program that made me go "what!!???".  SNL's Chevy Chase used to play in a college rock band with Steely Dan's Becker and Fagan!

Yesterday I heard the nickname of The Wrecking Crew applied to a group of LA based studio musicians from the '60s that played on hundreds of popular recordings. I guessed right at who the main bass player and drummer was -- Carol Kaye - bass and Hal Blaine - drums.  There were several other interesting people in that club too.

Yep was aware of Taylors probs. I think his eloquent expression of feeling in song is even more special given how he has struggled for his art

Likely so Vicki.  Some of the greatest artists and musicians alike used the arts as an outlet.  This might be the difference between those that survive emotional hell, and those that succumb.  The methods of dealing with acute pain..  JT, and MANY other ballad singers have turned acute pain to profound creativity as opposed to doing themselves in.  Not sure if this is a difference between the survivor of emotional hell and the person that succumbs to it or not.. Seems as though in the world there's a venue for all to turn pain into productive ability assuming they don't succumb to depths of depression involved... MOST gorgeous ballads country, rock ballad and MANY styles involve the human condition (pain and suffering due to emotion)

Sort've like turning lemon into lemonade, and suffering and pain into beauty.  There some irony to this of course... Using a gorgeous musical means of conveying tragedy.. But it's affective !

You can see a similar effect in everyday people as well.  People who want to sing but don't because they are afraid too.  They use alky to put them over the edge.  Maybe it took real-life turmoil to get superstars like JT to the point to really lay the voice and musical talent out there for everyone to see.  These people have truly been to the edge and are not afraid of failure anymore; most people hold a little back for one reason or another; maybe afraid of ridicule, or the knowledge that thier best may not be good enough and they never want to find that out.
