About this time last year, some of you got me thinking about pro audio for karaoke.  I then gladly divorced Vocopro, BMB and Dtech (for all you knew I got ripped off).  For that same reason, do you think pro speakers or monitors would be a wise choice for home theater?  Has anyone used or heard of it?  I am building a delicate home theater in the basement with wall treatments and all.  Wonder what would I rather buy.

Unless you have a very large room, I would say that it would be an overkill to have pro-audio speakers in your home theater.  My home theater setup uses small satellite speakers because I don't want them to be obtrusive (there's that word again...).

As you may know from my previous posts, I own a pair of Yorkville NX55Ps which I really like.  I was lucky to buy them for only $599 each including shipping, handling, and stands.  I said that I was lucky because it turned out that the website had posted the price incorrectly, and I just happen to spot it and ordered a pair.

By the way, check out the RCF Art speakers.  They are really great, but are rather expensive.  Don't despair, Carvin sells similar speakers for half the price.  Their LM Series speakers look just like the RCFs, which leads me to believe that the speakers are made by the same company.  Is it possible?  Here is the link to the RCF speakers:

Carvin has not yet published the LM Series on their website, but it is shown on their latest catalog.  If you are interested, call them and ask for a copy of their catalog, or better yet, drop by one of their stores and check them out.  I may sound like a Carvin salesman, but I am not... I just happen to like their products.

Home theater speakers are jsut that for a reason, just like PA (public address) speakers are just that for a reason.

Home theater speakers are HIGH FIDELITY speakers. They are basically tuned to reproduce PRODUCED content like movies and CDs.

PA speakers and components are designed to handle LIVE music. More specifically, they are designed to handle the various power spikes that are associated with live instruments and vocal performance.

These power spikes do not occur in produced programs like movies and CDs because the sound engineers that make these forms of media engineer them to be within a certain set range using compressor-type hardware/software.

As such, home theater speakers are attenuated to this very specific range of movies and CDs, and are going to reproduce that range at a much higher quality level than PA speakers can. On the other side of the coin, home theater speakers are not going to be able to reproduce live instruments and vocals at nearly the quality of PA speakers because the power spikes lie outside of their attenuated range.

So, for the highest quality, stick to home theater equipment for your home theater and separate PA equipment for your live performance, like karaoke.

Pro PA speakers on a home theater amp?  Not a wise choice.  Again, you'd be better off getting a small pa ayatem dedicated to karaoke only & let the home theater do what it is supposed to do.

Most PA speakers are not shielded, and all of those 15s have HUGE magnents inside of them. You may be slowly destroying your TV with that arrangement!!

Do the LCD & rear projection screens have the same magnetic interference?  I don't think they do, but not sure.

What's the point in a setup like that besides the "drool factor" we all went for back in the 1960's ?   Figure that's what maybe a 13x16 room ?  If he doesn't have any other place to store his PA system,  I suppose it geometrically fits, but that's a gaudy display when not on a stage..  Get a nice contemporary glass stand, put that TV on it, and the audio components  on a shelf or two... or better yet, this would go with the paneling and make the room look far nicer than that facsimile if a large entertainment center.  It's not balanced.  He's just storing large speakers

That type setup IMHO is a display of ostentation.  Little else.

Interesting window dressing tho.

I've been guilty of doing that type thing too MANY times.  I always end up getting put in my place... My Altec VOTT Bins and Marshall and Ampeg cabs now sit in a storage room instead of my living room where I liked to show them off.

I don't believe Plasma and LCD are prone to electromagnetic interference like CRT is.  Not certain about other features a bigscreen may have however such as DVD recording devices or players built in. The digital signal I don't think would be affected

Not too many ways to arange furniture in the trailer.    LOL  LOL

When you have an entertainment center that runs you 1K/month in electric bills, it leaves little mortgage money available for anything larger.    

He has expenses..  Plus $300/month on "Armor All" to keep the Tolex on his babe-magnet black and shiny as well as extraneous expenses such as court costs for watching Letterman at 130 DB..  replacement siding when his vibrates off the trailer. Caulking for the windows, etc.  These all add up.  Of course he doesn't have to worry about storm damage expenses.  Those speakers can blow away an F-5 storm.
