Mostly kickbacks Steve.  Suppliers wanting to give gifts or monies for buying their products.  Sometimes asking to say "look the other way." And it's not always expensive ones.  But it's still graft.

I had a light bulb supplier; in fact still do.  I had made a first purchase with him.  A few days later I received this package.  I open it and inside was a very nice coffee maker.  Not one you'd normally find at a Wal-Mart.  I sealed it back up with a letter and mailed it to him.  I told him to cancel the order and went on to ask him why their product was so bad that they had to give gifts away to get people to buy it.

He called me shortly after receiving it and was trying to say it was the company's way of saying thank you.  I told him if I had purchased the lights with my OWN money that might be fine.  But it belonged to the tax payer.  He then asked how about just not charging any shipping on anything we ordered.  I told him now we might be able to do business again.  And we have ever since.

I'm not trying to come off as anything special.  No, I've never had the sums of money being offered that we know politicians get.  But I think I would do the same as I do now.

Now from a karaoke standpoint, a while back I had  2 hundred dollars offered to me  to bump someone up in rotation.  I told him, (with the mic on) "No thanks, but if you make it 3 hundred and buy the bar a round THEY might let you go in  front."  Which led to a very red faced embarrassed A-Hole, and a round of applause from the crowd.

I just have a very firm belief that one, what goes around comes around, and two, practices of un-savory nature will bite you in the butt!

LOL

Kelly

Kelly,

I've been on boards, and kickback CERTAINLY is nothing foreign in such a setting.  I learned from others mistakes however to NEVER partake.  That type of situation can seriously bite you in the posterior down the road. We see it on the news, the S&L stuff, etc.   That was a valuable lesson I learned BEFORE ever making such a mistake.  That can cost jobs, court time, respect, and ALL sorts of ramifications, because it makes a person vulnerable to blackmail and bribe indefineately, it becomes a dark cloud others can and might very well hang over you.

Good call Kelly, I wish more could se it that way. Those perks are paid for by the taxpayer. My dad explained that to me when I was very young. It took about two weeks for the idea to make sense to me but it did eventually.

This might sound far-fetched but since I'm off my rocker to begin with, it reminds me of something else that I felt was wrong, but it also get's into ethical constructs and begs the question how low is REALLY low ?

Was it Pete Rose who bet against his own team ?  I forgot, but that bugged me too.. Of course in the broad scheme of things what the more complicated ethical judgement is, is whether or not such action should or should not have negated his achievements as somebody eligible for the "hall of Fame"... But since this is entirely off topic,  You won't hear me mention it... NOPE,  not I...  I'm not one to stray !

you mean I could've gotten more than 75 cents from BD ?  :(

Next I'll be hearing that Legislature doesn't really have a "Karaoke Integrity Committee" associated with the Supreme Court.

Don't be silly,  I'm still trying to figure out ways to spend the money I got from selling those laptops to folks such as you !

OK,  I'll buy one back,  how much ?   :dancin:

Better be tomorrow.  I currently have a Dutch auction closing.  I'm selling New Jersey

Well,  Unless you pay for the S&H as well,  for that amount of money I refuse to go thru the effort of Removing Newark and Hoboken, you get them too.   Besides,  I don't want to have to put this state back up for auction yet a 5th time.   It's as tough to unload as Rhode Island was !  So OK,   It's yours free,  just send a SASE
