It makes a difference if your system really needs one.  The better the system, the less chance of really needing it.
What are your current components from the mixer to the speakers?

a Yamaha MG12/4FX mixer to two QSC HPR 122i powered speakers.

Main out of mixer to input on BBE, output on BBE to input on speakers.

Also don't use the Subject line as part of your reply, unless you are changing the subject.  I almost missed that about your laptop.  Which model BBE?

Sorry. The BBE is a 482i but doesn't have XLR connections and my speakers only have XLR connections. I guess could hook it up through the aux send and returns or use XLR to phono connectors. Would that degrade the signal? Thanks.

It won't do any good going through a send/return loop, the send/rtn loop is just a side chain signal tapped off of the main signal, so the orignal signal would still be going through which would defeat the purpose of the BBE.  
Yes going from non-balanced (1/4") to balanced (XLR) will degrade the signal.  It needs to be a part of the signal chain.  
If your mixer has main output 'insert' jacks, it could be connected through there, but I didn't get a good look at the manual for that board & didn't see any off hand on the pics from the manual.

Don't XLR to balanced TRS connectors pass all three connections?

This prompts another thought about mic cables, but I will put in in a new thread.

Yes an XLR to the TRS 1/4" would be a balanced connection, but his BBE isn't a balanced 1/4" in/out.

You need to buy the proper BBE it is a 882I
