Okay guys, I did some superficial research and it seems karaokemaker has a point. Some of the new spendier sound modules Do use sampled wave forms. If they are sampled ever third semi-tone this could be a very respectable sound. Maybe midi is about due for a comeback. What is it you do for Zoom and the like karaokemaker?

Ok, my cooler head came back. Let's analyze this, shall we? Call me an elitist but to me, original instument sounds better to synthesized sound no matter what. I don't care how well it's been synthesized. If they do use sampled wave forms, that defeats the main reason why people use MIDI in first place, size of the file. The reason why karaoke manufacturer in the past used MIDI in the first place is because of two reasons: easy to reproduce (don't need live musician to create MIDI files) and the size of the file (1/10th of the CD+G files). The advantage of the file size allowed some to fit 1000s of files in to a small storage space. If you are using sampled sounds, that would increase the files size by quite a bit, thus diminishing the advantage of MIDI. Again, my choice at this time would be CD+G.

If MIDI is OH SO GREAT, the CAT'S MEOW, best thing since SLICED BREAD, then why dosen't every musician drop their instrument, and go to MIDI?
Or why there are no famous MIDI only musicians out there?
Like topher said.....

We are talking about two completely different things here. Most of us here think of MIDI karaoke file as those 50kb files with .kar extension.
Jerry and karaokemaker are talking about real instrument samples similar to MOD.
Studio use such method to cut cost. So what we hear as real instrument in our karaoke tracks are 'real' but using midi to trigger those samples.

To explain a bit further. The samples are in hardware. The midi software doesn't have to get any bigger. A trigger is still a trigger and a polyphonic after touch is still a .... you get the idea. I'm not saying that it's good or bad because I haven't really played around with midi since the mid 90's (and thought that no one else had either) but it seems to be making a come back. I would be very interested to know more about this format if there is new information to be had.
By the way: I think the Jerk-O-Meter is great!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synclavier
In Frank Zappa's Biography, he states that once a group of musicians didn't have enough time to learn or rehearse one of his songs, so they attached cables to each instrument and played the synclavier, and nobody was able to notice.

karaokemaker: Thanks for the links. However, on following the links they all said the same thing. Midi is basically synth with limited sampling in the higher end models and the samples (Yamaha) are devoted to the slap and bang sort of noise that you find in hip hop and rap. Midi always slapped and banged pretty well. Anyway, you statement that midi is now sample based doesn't seem to pan out. Any more information that you have would be welcomed.
