I don't believe that the quality of a karaoke show is determined by the quality of the singers. It would be, in my opinion, too bad if karaoke shows were comprised soley of outstanding singers. I don't evaluate (overall) the shows that I attend based upon the quality of the singers. Sure, it's important that every show have some good singers. It's more important that everyone have a good time!
Should people only join a bowling league in which everyone bowled well, and that didn't offer handicaps? And since a league comprised of such good bowlers would surely be made up of "SERIOUS BOWLERS", you wouldn't have to worry about bowling with drunks in such a league. Right? The drunks would be down the road, bowling with other hack bowlers, having a great time, in the handicapped league.
I, for one, wouldn't want to bowl in such a league and I don't want to attend a karaoke show where everyone is a great singer. I appreciate hearing people who just want to have a good time, especially when they don't think they sing that well. And I most enjoy karaoke venues where there is a dance floor and people take advantage of it (during karaoke performances). Long live dancing!

It's much better on the ears to have quality singers all night. It's what I prefer. Quality singers are more entertaining and they help to keep the non singers there longer. A bunch of poor singers can quickly kill a crowd. Show me the talent anyday.

I, too, enjoy a karaoke show more if there are some "not-so-good" singers in the mix. They tend to add a degree of entertainment you often don't get from too serious a singer. Plus, the not-so-goods are usually more laid back, and less likely to start a fight; their just having fun. But, of course, my ears require good singers too. :D

My LEAST favorite type of singer is the one who is, legitimately, a really good singer, but thinks they are so much better than everyone else and are way too serious up on the stage, doing all of the american idol-type BS.
My FAVORITE are the 8 drunk girls just wrapping up their bachelorette party who get up and sing the worst version of MATERIAL GIRL you have ever heard but have a BLAST doing it.
I have also noticed 95% of the time, people in the audience will give their undivided attention to a horrible singer but couldn't care less when a good singer is up there.

I tend to get the better singers to my show due to quality of equipment, selection, and fair rotation. So, yes more of my singers are good than bad, but none of them have the "walk on water" attitude. I still get your "average" singers. But because of the "quality" of singers I do get, I get a group of "regular" "listeners" who come each night JUST to listen and dance.

That's why white noise is so nice. Once the mix is set no need to pay much attention.

There is nothing like a few quality singers in the rotation, and it is true that some people do stop in just to listen to the better singers. On the other hand there is nothing like a singer or group of singers who are out JUST to have a good time singing . With that being said ...... THERE ARE THOSE SINGERS who do chase people either outside for a cigarette every time they sing OR outside for good to some other bar. Its like listening to NAILS ON A CHALKBOARD!!!!!

These are also the singers that 'tend' to spend more!

I like to have quality singers in the rotation but really prefer them to be the smaller percentage. If I have more middle of the road to not so good singers it encourages more people to get up and sing. If the rotation makeup is predominately really good singers the newbies or not so good singers will find it very intimidating and will opt not to put in a song.
I agree with Lonnie....these folks generally spend the most money in the bar. Most of my really good singers spend by far less.

Now thats the kind of fun a karaoke night is suppose to be. Everyone will not be so serious about their singing in a bar full of partiers.....that's what makes it interesting being in the audience....sometimes people laugh at themselves!!
Hell, sometimes it helps to be taken down a notch or two!! LOL
Believe me, if my performances were perfect, I wouldn't have so many notches in my drink budget.
I can always tell when it was a fun night by counting the leftovers the next morning. ![Sad :(](./images/smilies/icon_sad.gif) LMAO

You have to be more specific about the word "quality."
Sound quality?
KJ quality?
Singer quality?
Selection quality?
$600 microphone quality?
A night full of screaming drunks to me does not indicate quality.
Wasting singing time is not my idea of quality.

A night full of screeaming partying drunks will make the bar its MOST MONEY! Nice sober quiet and well behaved QUALITY karoke singers dont buy much alchol!! Ill take the big sales nights with lots of partying drunks doing shots adn buying lots of well drinks anytime of the week!
I can just imagine BD's gig..........."pure kareoke".....unending dead air time between songs, no partying, no dancing, no energy, no excitement, no fun............deathly quiet on slow nights...much like a MAUSOLEUM. The silence can be DEAFENING!! More like a RECITAL than any kind of fun partying night. Most likely a cramped little place without enough seating, probly kinda run down, probly in need of a remodel. Kinda place where you really DONT WANT to go in the bathrooms! Real smoky inside so you smell of ash when you come out.
Guests are REQUIRED TO STAY SEATED UNTIL CALLED. DANCING IS PROHIBITED. CLAP ONLY WHEN DIRECTED. NO MAKING EXCESSIVE CLAPPING, WHISTLING OR HOOTING OR HOLLERING NOISES. SPEAK ONLY WHEN SPOKEN TO BY THE DJ. NO SPONTANEOUS DANCING ALLOWED. NO DOING YOUR THING ON STAGE---MUST STAND RIGIDLY IN PLACE BEFORE THE MICROPHONE. NO PARTYING ALLOWED!!
ANY DEVIATION FROM THE BD RULES WILL RESULT IN IMMEDIATE EJECTION.
Thats what any of us are at the bar for. SELL SELL SELL. And who buys more?? Loud SWEATY DANCING PARTIERS who also like to sing. Not quiet, reserved, well behaved PRO KARAOKE singers. THey are the ones buying 1, maybe 2 dringks or soft drinks a night and leaving by 12:30 AM or earlier. Its the loud bachelleroette or birthday partys that bring the big $$ sales and stay until closing and have that last big closing run on the bar. Thats where the $$ Sales are. I mean after all B D you yourself have said SOOO many times before that your MAIN purpose is to make the bar money. Not to mention that drunk cuties are just OH SO MUCH FUN!!!!!
But since BD donst play any kind of music and is in such a tiny littel place that has no dance floor that he must not have ever EXPEREINCED such a thing before!!
Would explain why he resents dance music so much...........since he CANT HAVE IT HIMSELF.........then nobody shouold have it!
Sounds like sour grapes to me!!

Just like the one room school house of years ago. Like the Pennsylvania dutch. I pull up in my horse drawn wagon. No electricity. It's a foot pedal powered karaoke machine. That's why my song book is edited no swearing or fun of any kind. Strict dress code. No alcohol. Nothing but prim and proper dancing. No flashes of skin. No unruliness. Sing into a tin can. You can get a good reverb sound out of it. Karaoke music is interrupted with prayers and collections. Weeehooo now that's karaoke. 100% pure. Reverend BIGDOG presiding. No sinners or heathens. Tea totallers and bible readers. Go behind the barn and fetch me a switch, for acting like a jerk. Dance music the Devil makes. With all those wild gyrations and sexual innuendos. Devil's work, I tell ya....

A great karaoke show has NOTHING to do with good singers, filler music, dance music, or all the other stuff BD complains about. THe TRUE proof of a GREAT Karaoke show is in the bars til at the end of the night. You are hired to make the bar MORE MONEY, that's it, that's all.

I think all prefer one thing over another. Had a club that actually had older guest there quite early before Karaoke, and enjoyed listening to the good singers. Had been told that they stayed after having dinner for that reason. I also agree with many other posts here that the drinkers are spending more money, and really don't care what your equipment sounds like, because they are rarely up to singing only after they have had a belly full. By that time, many good singer have performed and the people who are there to listen to them are usually gone by midnight. By that time, the so called bad singers are in rare form. And funny enough the good singers actually are having fun watching and listening to those not so good. Plus many times they have friends with them that can't sing and they are there to show off. It also makes them sound better in their minds.
I don't care for the ones that think they are their entertain and then get upset if they screw up. Because they are so infatuated by themselves. And of course it is the KJ's fault always.
But it I had my drothers, I would prefer to listen to the ones that can and do, do a good job.
