I'm a home user so these speakers might be used in a large living room or backyard for several family get togethers a year.

I'm looking for something that is quick to setup and durable.

I'm using a laptop/computer and I'm looking to buy speakers, a mixer, maybe a dsp or two.

I'm leaning toward powered speakers.  I'm willing to pay for quality.  I was looking at the Yorkville NX-55Ps, but they seem to be overkill.  I list them just to give a top limit of what I'm willing to pay for speakers.

Also could someone point me to an online or offline tutorial on producing a good mix.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Oh, and the more idiot proof and durable the better, e.g. hot plugs, screamers, drops, drips, etc.

Enemil, I happen to have a pair of the Yorkville NX55Ps.  These speakers are small enough to fit inside plastic containers from Walmart, light, and sound great.

If you are on a budget, don't count out the new Carvin LS series and the LM series.  If I didn't have the NX55Ps, I would consider these speakers, especially the tri-amped 3-way speakers.

I don't have to build it all at once but the 1,500 to 3,000.  If I can keep it lower, I'd be happy, but I understand you've got to pay for quality.

I'm primarily interested in the speakers, because I have access to a computer with a M-Audio Project Mix I/O audio interface/controller.  Although I don't know if the Sonar Producer software installed is really usable for live mixing/dsp.  Is there another piece of software for making a live digital mix?

I was looking at the Carvins.  The other brands that seem to get raves are the JBL and the Mackies (although people were mentioning quality control issues since they moved to China).

Do you have a sub teamed with your NX55Ps?

I use a Carvin TRX118B sub, powered by a Carvin DCM2500 amp.  I was going to buy the Yorkville LS608, but decided to go with the TRX118B because it is cheaper and lighter.  The TRX118B puts out a lot of thump with the DCM2500 amp.

I see most professionals seem to like a seperate amp and speaker, but I've never come across the pros and cons of passive versus active--well actually the pro I've heard for actives is redundancy that if one speaker goes down the other keeps functioning.

Same is true with a stereo amplifier.    If half blows, you still have the other half.

This just illustrates how clueless I am about sound equipment.

This is only true depending on the design of the amp & what actually blows.  If a power supply goes in a stereo amp, the amp - both channels - are dead.

I was hoping you would chime in, you seem to be very knowledgeable about what's available.

I'm not looking for anything near as elaborate as your systems, just looking at them makes me want to curl up into the fetal position.

But I was hoping you might point me in the right direction.

Any ideas for a core setup for use  with my laptop.  I'm looking for something that's durable, easy to set up, decent quality, and loud enough for familly get togethers in a living room or at a backyard pool party, and in the range of $1500 to $3000?

Hi, just stumbled on to your post.  I might have a sound system that I would like to sell that is about what you are describing.  The speakers are Bag End TA-15s, with a QSC850 amp.  It's a 15" speaker with a horn.  These cabinets have enough low end that you won't need subs at the volume you plan on using.  I have tripod stands for the speakers and a really good Audio Technica wireless mic to go with it.  
It would be perfect for your family gatherings indoors or outdoors.  I will even color code the cords to make the system fool proof.   It is a used system that was in my church, but there wasn't enough funding, so the church closed down.  I kind of inherited the system, but don't have much need for it.  I also have a digital key controller that allows you to change keys of songs from any soundsource.  I saw your range of $1500-$3000, and I could easily sell it for $1500.   It would include the labled cables, amp, 2 speakers, stands, digital key controller, and wireless mic.  I have tested everything to make sure it works.  Let me know if you're interested.  Hoffman6000@gmail.com

That amp actually has too little power for those speakers.  They should be getting a minimum 300 watts into 8 ohms, that amp delivers 185 per channel into 8 ohms.  Possible speaker damage can/may occur at higher volumes.  The RMX1850HD is a better suited match.  Besides, at $1500, for all used gear, is a little steep!

I'd used my laptop with the set up above to run my church's party of 400 people without any problems.... just my 2 cents.
