Now, you have me considering placing a volume control that the singer can adjust themselves on it.  Thanks for the idea!

I don't feel confortable with a vol ctrl that is singer-adjustable. Imagine a singer bending over the monitor; mic on the right hand and just 1' away from a bad feedback. No, it is a bad idea.

Maybe the volume control isn't the best idea, for all venues, but In most cases, it would be set at its max setting, and I would control it from the board.

I use a simple Roland 15 watt active monitor mounted on the TV stand in front of the singer. I find 15 watts is ample that close to the singer.

Although the FOH is audible without it, some singers insist on being turned up past what the actual mix demands. Cranking up the foldback monitor makes 'em think I've responded to their request for more volume while I'm actually still in control of what the crowd is hearing.

If neccessary I'll occasionally put a tiny drop of the music through the foldback too. Personally I prefer to hear my vocals through the house PA with no monitor to 'colour' the mix at my earholes.

My 2 cents

GH
