In the 70's I used to talk skip on CB to Europe, Australia and many places in the lower '48.  A group of us would actually try to see how many different locations we could talk to.  Dang! I still even recall my call sign (KRV8109) and handle (Amoeba) LMAO

Actually, now days, any river or stream that can be accessed by road has so many people fishing on it that you almost literally are rubbing shoulders.  That's why I don't fish anymore.

I don't remember enough about radiowaves to understand how a 2 watt talkie could hit 3000 miles on ground skip.  Sunspot conditions for some reason change things drastically however. I recall NOTHING about any of this though..  Even line-of-sight two AM can't generally travel further than about 10 miles under IDEAL circumstances 11 meters.   Sunspot conditions I need to look up, something about geomagnetic storms surging the power grid

Skip is when the ave goes up and bounces off the ionospere and returns A ground wave transmitts shorter as the freq increases At a certain point it is mostly los..

We had a few tv microwave repeaters with parabolic antennas at 5 watts...If I remember up tp 75 mi with los... The uplinks are only 4 or 5 watts but there is a transponder in the bird...

compressed side-band maybe,  but standard CB at 5 watts really only put's out about 3.5 and if matched very well with an SWR maybe closer to 4..  That can make 75 miles without skip inland on standard CB ?
