It's not karaoke.   It's a hybred of karaoke.

If you throw everything you can in to the mix, it's not the same.

You don't go to a DJ and make them do karaoke, just for you.

So why should anyone go to "karaoke" and demand dance music?     That's the part that doesn't make sense.   Common or business wise.

Do you go to a mechanic and demand he remove your brain tumor?

Do you go to the movie and demand they change what's playing?

People go to karaoke for karaoke.    If you want to dance all night go to a DJ.

Changing karaoke to cater to non singers is not right.     Everyone can dance to a karaoke song.   But nobody can sing to dance music.

I will never rearrange or change or cater to the non karaoke crowd, on a karaoke night.     I will try to make them stay and be happy but not at the expense of the singers, the real reason for "karaoke."

I am not speaking strictly from a KJ standpoint.   I am trying to address the subject from the singers point of view.

You will say the singers keep coming.   Yeah, and I will say they go to every other working hack in town, too.

I can not figure out why so many singers want to go to places where they get skipped in the rotation, the sound totally sucks, no song selection.   And the hack  works steady week after week.

So yes you will still get people to come to a show that caters to the non singers just as much as the singers, but that doesn't make it right.

I don't care who likes it or not!!! ... Big dog is right on this statement and is the exact reason The best KJ's in our area are no longer in Business!!!!!

My family and friends do not have anywhere to go sing karaoke in our area because the Great KJ team we had here in this area Got replaced by under cutting hacks who could care less about how the system or singers sound and they could care less about fair rotation....and they cater to the young punks who want dance music and then they wonder why they cannot make any money and why they have a hard time getting people to come to the bar to sing karaoke.

They heard karaoke was wanted in the bar and so they got there own system because they didn't want to pay the karaoke KJ $300 per night anymore!!!!

So they bought there own system and hired a employee to be Mr MC and run  the karaoke show....And it sucks so bad because the idiot running the show could care less about fair rotation or how the system sounds and he won't adjust nothing to even try to make anything sound better!!!  And people come in and see this hack how awful this karaoke show is run...and they LEAVE!!!!!! and they never go back!!

I agree with you Big dog but other people who are not playing with a full deck of cards cannot see your point or my point and they will continue to kill karaoke as a whole because there small minds cannot see what they are doing to the karaoke Business!!!! They are Killing it slowly little by little!!!!!

A perfect example is Strikers lounge on Brainerd Road in Chattanooga Tn!!!!

This is the worst karaoke bar I have ever seen in the whole history of karaoke since it became popular!!!!!  This place has a sound system that is capable of sounding good but the so called KJ could care less how it sounds or how the singers sound or how fair the rotation is!!!!!  And it sucks so Bad we will never go there again!!!

It is a waste of hard earned money to go there for service that is that BAD!!!!

Big dog and I are right on this here subject!!! and any one who disagrees I feel sorry for because they really have no clue what so ever!!!!

Like it or not....Poor Sound Systems, Unfair Rotation, and too much dance music killed the $300 per night karaoke host in our area because the bar owners wanted to pay less and cater to the young punks who wanted to dance!!!

So now that all the regs quit going to karaoke....all the karaoke bars went out of business in our area except for a small few who are not even worth going to because it is a waste of time and money.....Plain and simple!!!

Maybe your area is different....But in this area karaoke is Dead!!!!  :(

I read it too.  But........................................................................I don't get it.  If the bar owners want to cater to young punks, what can a KJ or anyone else do about that?

If there's no karaoke in an area, can it mean that there is not enough interest in that area to have a "real" karaoke venue.

Now, in response to rants against bar-owned systems, and cheaply paid KJ's, and the like---  Some of you may remember that I frequent a Karaoke Bar.  This place has been in business since I arrived in FL back in 1991.  The sound system is great.  The tracks are predominantly (over 80%) Music Maestro (not my favorite manu) and the KJ's, while being paid $10 an hour, manage the rotation quite equitably.  AND they utilize the services of about 6-7 different KJ's throughout the week.

While all of the wonderful KJs are sleeping,  :asleep:  after a hard night of dance music/karaoke, and in there minds,
they think they did a wonderful job again, the real world will take over.
The fact that they just put another nail in the coffin of karaoke, will escape them.

For they sleep and plan the next dance set in their mind.    Perhaps they didn't
notice that they just lost another regular karaoke singer, to a dancing non singer.
It's only one, who cares....Next week..... it will be another....
but I'll gain another non singer.     Boy, I really am the best ....
what am I now a DJ or a KJ after all the singers quit coming?????
Who cares I'm still working and my karaoke >>scratch that<< my
new DJ business is really taking off.

you have a good point there eric!!  So actually it's the cheap bar owners who's killing karaoke because they do not understand that Quality karaoke will keep regular customers coming back because they think they can get by with cheap low Quality karaoke because they are simply cheap!!  LMAO

Music Maestro??? OMG!!!! That's horrid by it's self alone!!!  LMAO

But at least you have a decant place to go to karaoke.  :)

There's nothing left in our area but hacks....unless I drive a couple hours north and then I might find some decent karaoke bars.  :)

But the places here local are not worth going to except for one place and its way too small and way too crowded!!!!  This one place that is worth going to is so crowded that you can't dance if they did play dance music!!! There no room to stand much less dance!!!!  LMAO

But they have a Great system, host and song selection and that is why its always crowded!!!! But good lord you have to get there two hours early just to get a table or a place to sit!!!!

It's just like when Reagon fired the Flight controllers and all the union people said, it's not me or going to bother me.    Well it ended up hurting every working person in the country.   That why everyone is loosing pensions and hourly wages are still right above the poverty level.    It sneaks up on you and before you have a chance to change anything it's too late.      All the money in the world and the best planning  can not revive anyone....... after the autopsy.  :O

So good KJs that think they are "adapting" (I love that word) by playing more and more dance music will continue in their blind way to help kill karaoke as we know it. :dancin:  :hi5:  :worship:

I'll still love you   when you're unemployed. :O  LMAO

Keep on believing in that.  The trend will eventually even reach you.  No form of entertainment goes on forever...it changes & evolves & sometimes dies or struggles to keep living.  Disco still lives strong in the hearts of many, it's interesting watching a bunch of 50-60 year olds doing the Hustle still as they did back in the 70's!  There was a special on one of the Docu channels the other day.

3-T, now I guess you're going to tell me that all of the unemployed KJs in your area didn't play dance music at karaoke????

With each dance song you play at karaoke, the closer you get to calling yourself a DJ.     Or to soon be replaced by one.  :O   And I'll bet he's better at being a DJ than you are at being a KJ.  LMAO

A DJ will never kill his crowd by playing karaoke music.....will he????   :O  LMAO  LMAO

But a DJ can replace a KJ that plays too much dance music.      :worship:  :worship:  :worship:  :O  LMAO

I've got to think, non stop karaoke, no filler, no breaks, how does one take a restroom break?  Be it there may be a 6+ minute song to go to the latrines, but most of those minutes might be instrumental breaks, hence no singing.   Or does one take gallon jugs to work with them?   If I ever go to a show, I'm not shaking that guy's

BD,

I unfortunately do not have all professional singers at my shows, and have to deal with incorrect #'s, indecisive singers, and lord forbid.....flakes! I find that having some 'filler' music to avoid dead air. It also helps to get that "flow" you like to talk about, breaking the monotony of slow songs with 15-30 seconds of upbeat music in between songs or calming music. It breaks up the night quite well.

20 seconds between songs * 60 songs a night = 20 mins or 4- 5 songs lost over a 4 hour show. If that is the death knell for karaoke, hand me the hammer to drive the nail.............
