Hi Isis--this is what I was taking to help quit.  You have to follow a schedule (the doctor will fill you in on this--you go up and down and off) but I haven't had a cigarette in over a month and no urge now.  I've tried cold turkey, "the patch" and Wellbutrin to no avail so I'd suggest you give it a try.  I can't hurt!  Take care, Michael

Thanks Michael.. I starte the program yesterday...Like you I tried all the other ones and Nicotine replacement just didn't seem to be the way to go again.. I am very hopeful for this...And very determined....Are you still taking the pills??

I'm more or less off of them...I can take one if I'm expecting something that might be a "cue" to smoke again or suddenly have an urge, but I've found after a certain length of time there is little urge to smoke (I REALLY wanted to stop so that probably helps too!)  Geez, I'm all out of bad habits now...quit drinking 18 years ago, lost 100 pounds when I was 14 and have kept it off, now, no smoking! I'm sure I'll get immersed in some compulsive habit but I'll try to keep it a healthy one!  Good luck to you Isis! If you need to blow smoke about how your feeling (sorry!) I'd be happy to give you an ear.  Take care.

Way to go girl..... sounds like you're very serious about kicking the habit, and that's a great start.

I've never been a smoker, I don't have any "serious" smokers in my family either. (they're a bit redneck, they all chew copenhagen instead)  LMAO

But I've seen people try to quit, and literally go through hell doing it cold turkey. Maybe this new stuff you got will work for ya.

When my dad quit chewing tobacco- doctors orders & instructions- he kept gum in his pocket constantly. He wouldn't chew just one piece- he'd have four or five at a time. And every day, for about 5 days.... he'd take a gallon jug of water and squeeze 5-6 lemons in it, and drink the whole gallon throughout the day. I guess lemon juice helps rid the body of nicotine, so you wont physically crave it. Anyhow, it worked for him.

Good luck g/f.... I'm rootin' for ya:)

Congrats Dennis.

Added: I have switched to cheaper cigarettes for now but I need to get my butt over to the doctor's office to see if he will prescribe the stuff that Sharon is using. Leaving the house is a problem for me.

Hey Sharon, how's tricks? Hope you are still doing well and sticking to your resolution. I applaud your decision. I've heard nicotine is more addictive than heroin.

Myself I have never smoked. I never wanted to. I loathed cigarettes as both of my parents were smokers when I was a kid, and I used to have to drive around with them all shut up in the car in the backseat. My Dad wouldn't put down the windows. I would get serious car sickness, but all of it was just sickness from the smoke. Sometimes he would crack the window and let me breathe a bit, but he would get mad at me when I said I was having trouble breathing - like I was making it up. LOL

Last 8 mos or so I have gotten a bit more paranoid about the smoke. I used to regularly visit smoky clubs for years. Secondhand is supposed to be the worst. A few years ago I got pneumonia, and ever since then I have some occasional asthma. Asthma really sucks! When you can't breathe you just think anything and everything is causing it, and you feel terrible. Imagine walking around with a plastic bag over your head. It is the worst when that Mexican smoke comes up during around the May time frame.  Anyway, I am concerned with secondhand smoke when I sing at karaoke. I never used to worry about it, but I started thinking of all the deep breaths of air that I take as I sing a lot in a club. That has to be really bad for you.  Fortunately Austin is a no smoking town in clubs and restaurants but I often go to places outside of the city limits such as Manchaca or Cedar Park, or even Steve's place in Pflugerville.

Life can suck enough from other health issues without having to stack the deck against you with all the smoking. I hope to really get fit this year and perhaps start climbing mountains again in about a year's time. That may really be tough with the asthma, but it's worth a try. I used to be able to run 20 miles. Now I am lucky to go 1 1/2.

Anyway, Cheers and Best Wishes to you! If you need any support drop me a PM anytime.

Bill

Thanks Bill, Thanks Dennis.

Well, I have been following the prgram for a week now.  Today is my first day smoke free. granted I have only been awake for about 2 hours, but amazingly enough I am not feeling the strong craving I thought I would.  More of a habit thing.  But I am planning out my day to keep me busy.  I figure if I can keep busy with stuff I will not have the urge to grab that cig out of habit.

BTW Rich is quitting cold turkey....Today is his first day smoke free too...

Last night we cleaned the house and the cars of all the cigs, ashtrays and stuff.  Put it all in the trash.  Now it sits at the curb waiting for the trash man to come and get it all.

No going back at this point.

I'm happy for you Sharon.

I'm going to the doctor on Monday to see if he will prescribe the same thing for me. That's up to him because he knows that I will only ask and not push the issue.

Maybe Rich will have less trouble this time without smokers around him 24/7.

You have my cell number if you need us. Getting an oil change and going to CompUSA this morning (320 external USB HDD for $99 after mail-in rebate) tehn back home.

Arlington restaurants went smoke free, as you know. We can sing at home and eat out. I am here for ya, guys! Sharon give Rich a hug for me and slaphim if he gets irritable. Same goes for you, Rich!

Maybe we CAN get together tonight.

If we get together tonight I can go outside to smoke. I wouldn't expose you guys to smoke the very day you go smoke free.

You sound like a very considerate person.  I would like to have people like you as my friends.

Great job Isis on quitting.  Hope all goes well for you.  It looks like you have a lot of support.

Oh I forgot to mention that my folks quit smoking about 30 years ago or so. Like Rich, they just quit cold turkey. I think it happened after my grandmother died of emphysema. But my Dad just made up his mind and that was it. The mind is very powerful if you decide to use it. It helps to get mad and retaliate against your habit thereby digging in your heels.

I remember after they quit, they both couldn't believe how good and different food tasted. It seems this aspect amazed them. Sometime after that I believe is when we bought Julia Child's 'The French Chef' and started indulging in finer cuisine.

Good luck to you Sharon and Rich. You can do it if you really want it. Take it one day at a time. I wish you good health, and Bon Appetit.

Bill

Wise choice Sharon. Keep that youthful appearance and breathe for life....I'm choking to death. I find it very tough to abstain from the habit....especially while driving for hours on end at work.
Being on the computer causes me to smoke excessively also.
You'd think after my father-in-law died from lung cancer just recently, the wife and I would stop cold-turkey.....we want to, but we lead such a nervous life it seems.
We'd have to stop drinking coffee also...regular and decaf, because it's just a reminder of how a smoke goes with the coffee so well.

I hope you and Rich make it. Really, it's mind over matter. Determination is powerful in some people. Try some fat-free candy or mints to keep your mind on track. I love licorice. Problem is, I'll eat a whole bag of Good 'N Plenty, then fire up a smoke anyway.

I bet I'm not helping!!  Sorry.

Thanks for the encouragement Perry..

Today is my second day of not smoking... Historically speaking by day two I am ready to rip peoples faces off of them.. I am not feeling that at all...Just calm and hungry all the time.. But I think that is my oral fixation working overtime....

I still think this is kinda weird.. I have quit so many times before and for whatever reason this time seems to be going easier for me...

I did stock up at the dollar store on peppermints, butterscotch and cinnimin disks... I have also found myself brushing my teeth for no apparent reason.. But hey... Why not brush your teeth.. Good oral hygeine is key..Rright??? Right!!!

Not sure how Rich is doing... He is hybernating upstairs today.. I have seen him a couple of times only today.. He came down and made coffee.. he came down and refilled coffee and he came down and got a couple of meatballs and his laptop and went back upstairs.....I can tell you I know he hasn't smoked because we don't have any in the house.....

Perry when it is your time to quit you will do it and so will your wife.. It is something you have to do for yourself.. You can't do it for anyone but yourself.....

Sharon

I find it easier to try waking up in the morning while away from home. I know one day I'll just quit and not look back. I know how it feels to have fresh air in the lungs for a few hours atleast. I like the feeling.
Maybe if I had a sedative of some kind?

2 days already? That's EXCELLENT!! I think you'll have it whipped Sharon!! Just keep thinking about all the good things about not smoking. It really is a nasty habit.
One downside might be the newfound ability to smell anything and everything now. Especially with a man in the house. LMAO
Heck, I can't even smell a rose.....they all seem artificial to me. :(
