Consider this.......When he went to bed last night everything was normal.     Upon waking something seemed wrong.     Bigdog has just unknowingly entered in to a world where right is wrong and down is up.     Color is sound and sound is color.     The world spins backwards and time is reversed.    Good karaoke only consists of dance music and games.    Non singers are the norm.     DJs bow to their every whim.    Singers are shunned as if they are contagious beings from another time, another world.    Even the definition of the word "karaoke" has been changed.    The new meaning includes everything and the kitchen sink, but no singing.   Karaoke night has been changed to an "Entertainment" night.     You will not need microphones, TVs or song books.     Slips will be used to exchange phone numbers.      Underpaid EJs will spin the prize wheel, not musical discs.    Dancers and contestants will trample anyone that trys to sing one note.     Welcome Bigdog, to the Twilight Zone......

Star date sometime in 2008:

Scientists today dug up the remains of what appears to be a "KJ".     An autopsy will be preformed on the remains to determine the cause of death.   Carbon dating will be done to see if they can tell when karaoke died.     There has been much speculation as to "what actually killed karaoke."     It is one of the greatest mysteries of modern time.   How something so innocent and fun turned into an out of control monster.      Maybe the corpse will unveil the clues as to the karaoke extinction.     Keep you fingers crossed.     Pray for this to be just a "nightmare."

His way is RIGHT   His system is the BEST, His $600 wireless SM58 is better than your $99 wired one.  If you play a non karoke song on karaoke night you must be a hack and an inferior KJ to the DOG ( GOD spelled backwards).

And SOME of the things hes say's is true ..SOME not ALL.  

SO as the topic dictates I am posting as "I" believe the majority of the people here feel .....   Keep it up BD you are at the least ..entertaining in your own sick way !!!!!

What's funny is...I'm not laughing.

Since when did "Karaoke" become all about the non singers?      I want as many as I can get and keep, but I refuse to do it at the expense of the singers.    The non singers will NEVER tell me how to run my show.     They are a definite bonus as far as making money for the bar, but they are not the reason you/I were hired.

The business I started was not a "non singer karaoke" business.    

My service is not "non singer karaoke."

My song book is not for "non singer karaoke."

I make them put "KARAOKE" on the sign, not "NON SINGERS KARAOKE or KARAOKE MAYBE or DANCE MUSIC/BAR GAMES and if you're lucky some karaoke."


The non singers are an important factor, but they are not the primary reason/focus you/I were hired.


I can not blame any singer for not wanting to go to a bar that caters more or as much, to the non singers as it does to the karaoke singers. (On a regularly scheduled karaoke night)    If you think karaoke is dieing in your area, look in the mirror and see the killer.    

Sure you have to "adjust" the way you do karaoke whenever you start chasing away the reason for karaoke, the singers.   I would leave for another venue myself if I had to wait for the non singers to be appeased every rotation.  

If your goal is to attract non singers then do a DJ night.      Play nothing but dance music.      Karaoke night to me, means karaoke, period.

I am not impressed with your "skills" to run karaoke, whenever your rotation consists of dance music every rotation.

Karaoke singers do not go to a DJ night and force the DJ to cater to them.     Sounds a little stupid, huh?     They would be told to take a hike.  

But you will let non singers demand that you play something for them?     On a well publicized and advertised "karaoke" night.    And continue to do it as a regular part of the show.

I wonder why karaoke is dieing in my area??????    I can't understand what's happening to my crowd.    Less and less singers come to my shows.     Must be the undercutting hack down the road that has 50,000 karaoke only songs, that he plays continuously all night long.     Without playing dance music.    Yeah, he's the one that's killing me.    That's it!   Rotten hack caters to the singers.   He's ruining everything with that "karaoke" music.    Now I have to "adjust" more to the non singers.   Just to keep working on my karaoke night.

It's not karaoke.   It's a hybred of karaoke.

If you throw everything you can in to the mix, it's not the same.

You don't go to a DJ and make them do karaoke, just for you.

So why should anyone go to "karaoke" and demand dance music?     That's the part that doesn't make sense.   Common or business wise.

Do you go to a mechanic and demand he remove your brain tumor?

Do you go to the movie and demand they change what's playing?

People go to karaoke for karaoke.    If you want to dance all night go to a DJ.

Changing karaoke to cater to non singers is not right.     Everyone can dance to a karaoke song.   But nobody can sing to dance music.

I will never rearrange or change or cater to the non karaoke crowd, on a karaoke night.     I will try to make them stay and be happy but not at the expense of the singers, the real reason for "karaoke."

I am not speaking strictly from a KJ standpoint.   I am trying to address the subject from the singers point of view.      

You will say the singers keep coming.   Yeah, and I will say they go to every other working hack in town, too.    

I can not figure out why so many singers want to go to places where they get skipped in the rotation, the sound totally sucks, no song selection.   And the hack  works steady week after week.

So yes you will still get people to come to a show that caters to the non singers just as much as the singers, but that doesn't make it right.

I guess karaoke is killing itself, I have seen Tequila performed numerous times, and even some Fatboy Slim tracks are having its four lines being spoken over and over again.

And more to a serious point....  How come people drive on a parkway but park on a driveway?

I wanna sing where you do.. I have been dying to do tequila for years but nobody ever has it.....

I like your serious question... I wqas actually oarked on the parkway this week with all the bad weather around here....No fun, I would much rather be driving on the parkway anyday....

Bigdog, I love you. I truly do. You see things in black and white; most everybody else here sees things in shades of grey. Including me.

If I want to dance duirng a karaoke show, it doesn't mean I want to dance all night.

If I hear 8 bars of filler music, it might remind me of a song I want to sing. If I hear three or four songs while the KJ chats with a friend, it reminds me that I could be singing.

It is not an all-or-nothing thing unless you make it one. You are the only one making it all-or-nothing.

Sweetie, in spite of p!ssy things I have said in the past, I bet your show is smooth, seamless and high energy. But my goal when I go out to sing is to have fun, and I can do that while Electric Slide is playing in the background.

Your dedication is admirable. Your single-mindedness is a little scary. But I love you anyhow.  :hug:

"Karaoke" will only be...... what the KJ lets it become.    If you and your singing buddies think it's alright to have your singing fun interrupted, so a KJ (that can not deal with the non singers in any other fashion) can play dance music and waste your singing time, it's OK with me.  :hug:    

So just have yourself a nice interrupted, good old time.


When there are less and less KJs/bars offereing karaoke, don't cry to me.     It's a supply and demend thing.   The less people want karaoke, the less there will be.    Get it.   Take a look at the left coast unemployed KJs and see if karaoke and dance music are still popular.    It's more like dance night than karaoke, if you can find one.     Every dance song played is telling bar owners people must not like karaoke anymore.      [highlight=crimson]I'll just get a DJ to do what this guy does.[/highlight]  :O     Why ruin everyones fun with karaoke?     Remember bar owners are stupid, so it won't take much for another stupid idea to pop in to their head.

It isn't the games killing karaoke, it's the 50K+ songs illegal rigs with no one knowing how to run a show charging $50 a night.  These shows run all karaoke...no dance songs or fill music (must've been trained by BD), but very badly.  no mixing ability, no personality in their hosting skills, crappy equipment.  I would love to go to a show that played games, if the show was good to begin with, i've been to shows that played games & it was fun & didn't take more than 5-10 minutes out of a night.  

No bar around here will pay more than $100 & that's good anymore so the quality companies have all either quit or moved into the private only sector leaving the bars open for the crap companies making karaoke a low ball form of entertainment.  The good clubs that used to draw good crowds, now have low ballers running the show & have pretty much driven the crowds away or drastically turned them around.  Many clubs have either kept these companies because they are cheap & for some reason still draw crowds (albeit not a quality crowd) or they have dropped karaoke altogether.

yeah... and it's those same bars that BLAME karaoke for the downward spiral.

I mean, they're the ones opting to go the kmart way rather than the ritsy way, THINKING it's all the same...

sheesh! Anybody that can't tell the difference between a quality show and one that's in bigdog's words a hack... almost deserves it!
