Kelley, OMG you're daughter is too cute. Wow, a karaoke video game that trains you (well) for doing the confident for something in real life! That's a good strategy for the shy karaokers! Better (and more wholesome) than just chuggin drinks to get the courage to sing.

I agree. It is a good strategy for the shy ones. ..Although I think I sounded better when I drank..I dont drink anymore, I think I am tighter more reserved in my singing & with alcohol I tended to relax & not stress so much on how I sounded to other people I guess youd say. But it wouldnt bother me enough to drink a drop of the stuff again.

Next it will be DJgame-o-k-e.

Soon there will be no karaoke at all in karaoke.    Just games and dance/filler music.

Why don't you just have a bar game night and not screw up the karaoke night?    Call yourself Bob Barker.    Instead of a KJ.   Everyone can compete for cash and prizes and what's behind door number 1.

Here's the first clue:

We know it won't have anything to do with karaoke.   Or singing.

The end is near.   :O   You people will be the death of karaoke as we know it.

Thanks a lot. :worship:

It's not dieing fast enough, so you have to put it out of it's misery.      :asleep:  :(

GREAT idea.  I might have to incorporate that into one of my shows!

A GREAT way to include ALL the bar patrons - another grat idea!!!!  You ARE pretty smart!

That shouldn't be a shock, karaoke is a dying breed, sorry to say, new things are needed.  Games are a way to keep it interesting at least in these parts.
Thanks a lot. :worship: Yep, pure karaoke is a sure way to keep you out of work around here!!!!

BIG DOG........ ummmmm, what is your NAME?  I really prefer to address people by name ...... and after awhile, using screen names seems borderline rude.   :worship:

My question to you is ...... WHY are you so SURE that what MANY others are doing, and having SUCCESS with ..... is so BAD???  Have you gone to their shows?  Talked to their singers?  Talked to the people hiring them?  Seems to me, many here have VERY SUCCESSFUL businesses ... have been providing quality entertainment in THEIR communities for a long time ..... and have VERY GOOD reputations ..... AND

They do things DIFFERENTLY than you do.

After all this time on this board ..... can you not yet see that there is obviously more than ONE way .... to establish a good reputation, be very good at your trade .... provide a quality show ..... and still maintain the integrity of KARAOKE as a viable form of live entertainment?  :headscratch:

While YOU do things differently than many here, I do not question YOUR competence.  From what you post, it sounds like you provide quality entertainment and are competent. WHY can't you extend that recognition to others, simply because they do things differently than you?  Do you HONESTLY believe that because someone does things differently than the way YOU do....that it makes them LESS COMPETENT than you?

And PLEEEEEEEEEEASE don't use the word HACK in your reply.  I must say .... MOST of the people posting here have more than proven that they are NOT hacks.

Shotgun - I wouldn't waste your time and energey trying to talk sense to the BD
It is impossible !!!

Orginal poster - Raina asked a simple question for suggestions on some fun games to be played at her show. I assume to make it better, unique and a little more fun for all patrons singers and non singers.  We here at KS are all pro's from KJ's to Singers. We would not be here if we ALL did not share a pasison for Karaoke.

Some KJ's have had to adapt their shows from time to time depending on venue and crowds.  Adding the occasional GAME is a GREAT IDEA for singers and non singers alike. It is a great night when you can go non stop karaoke and have 80% of the bar into it 100% of the time. Its what we Pro KJ's live for!.  But sometimes no matter how good your selection, sound system, personality is - You need to mix things up  to get things moving.  KUDOS to the KJ's who dare to improve their shows by adding more than just $600 microphones.

Now back on topic....

Recently did a show around the holidays with a "NAME THAT TUNE" game.
I took some known, but not to pouplar songs, and used audacity to cut them up into chunks (2,4,6,8,10 second chunks).  THen played them one at a time with a break inbetween and people had to guess the song, and win a prize (free drink).

Als did a couple "REVERSE SONGS" games.  Again I took some known, but not to pouplar songs, and used audacity to convert them to play in reverse.  Used the for buffer music between singers every know and then, and then the first person to come up and tell me the song, won a prize.

Good then don't use them - you obviously have NOTHING of value to contribute to this thread, so why do you insist on stirring the crap?  You don't use them, we might.  If they are that bad, then I guess we'll be sending more business your way.  I was hired to do entertainment, karaoke is the main form, however it is not the only entertainment I am limited to - I have the ability to do other things.  We are one of the first karaoke bars that are still operating AS a karaoke bar since 92 - 7 nights per week - WITH games, contests & other things.  Seems to me that they probably wouldn't keep the format going if it wasn't working!

And please tell me what makes your "opinion" any better or worse than mine??????

Coming soon to a neighborhood near you...The Death of Karaoke...... :O

Staring your local hack and his following, with a trunk full of games and dance music.

If I let people at my karaoke throw the microphones on the ground after every song.   Who is resposible????

If I let people bring in their own discs to play that have nothing on them but filth.  Who is responsible???

If I let the crowd heckle the singers and throw stuff at them.  Who is responsible?????

If I let the crowd get totally out of contol.     Who is responsible????

If I let the non singers tell me what to play all night.  Who is responsible????

Anyone can dance during any karaoke song.   But the singers can not sing during dance music or games.       Tonight, I had people dancing on the bar (not my idea, but the bartender allowed it) and on the dance floor most of the night.    To all karaoke music.   Not one person asked me to play a dance song.     They danced to both slow and fast karaoke songs.     There were 15-18 singers and about 15-20 non singers all night long.  It's a small bar.

I posted a new thread so as not to hi jack this one anymore but it was removed.   In it I tried to answer your question.

Never said it was any better, but this post was about games that could be incorporated into a show, not whether it's a good idea or not.

It was an extention of this thread, titled the exact same thing.

I think what BD refuses to acknowledge is a word called "moderation"

Because I play filler music to kill time while one singer finishes and another makes their way to the bar, am I playing dance music all night?

If I place singers slips in a big brandy snifter and draw a name at the begining of the rotation for a free drink, am I playing games all night?

If someone wants to sing the "Rodeo Song" or "Family Tradition", and I playing nothing but vulgarity all night?

And if I have a table of 5 or 6 20 somethings out of a room of 50-60 people, is my show catering to them?

This is where BD is getting his fuel, by blowing up parts of what we do and expanding them to make them seem worse.

Please, get a reality check and stop attacking us on the boards because you are becoming extinct in your area due to refusal to evolve..........

The only time I use games is when I have a slow night and want to increase the crowd. It works great... We've used Trivia as part of the show which even the singers love. If the singer rotation gets large enough to support the show then yes by all means do Karaoke only but even then a show can get stale if you have the same old crowd coming in to sing.. those same 10 or 15 people that come out night after night after night and sing the same old songs....
Games break up the night keep the non drinkers involved... and makes the bar owner happy because your selling more drinks and keeping people there longer.

Now what we've done? Well my favorite is anything that will embarrass someone at the end of the game.... The count the change game... two guys... empty pockets you put a certain amount of change in each pocket... in one you put a room temp hot dog... a group of ladies come up and place their hand in one pocket and count the change... the three or 4 that get closest or exactly amount get to play in the finals... they must then count the money in the same pocket down to the last two for the finals... they are each called up and must quickly count the change in the "other" pocket start on the count of 3 ... 1...2....3 hands go in the look on their faces when they feel the hot dog is priceless... of course each wins a prize.....

Trivia range from general questions to Sex Trivia Night.... or Dirty Trivia....

We've done contests for singers and non singers....
At Christmas time we have two guys come up and 8 women... 2 4 person teams.. the guys are the Christmas tree... the girls have till the end of a song to decorate their tree.... boxes of decorations and lights are provided.... Best tree wins when their lit up.

We provide entertainment... for everyone in the venue.. not just the singers... your job is to keep them there and keep them buying from the venue.... how you do it is up to you....

Karaoke thanks to the bottom feeders will never be the same.... but being creative is why I got into this business.... and it's how I'm going to outlast the competition.

5-6 nights a week steady for 14 years, is the death I want.    You should be so lucky.

I run a pure karaoke night and always will.   I fear no hack competition in my area or any other area.

Playing dance music is not filler music, it's not karaoke either.

Rookies that can not run a continuos show use it.(filler music)

My show doesn't need to be "modified."    The non singers do not dictate the direction of my show.     It will always be for and about the singers, the nons are a bonus.     Everyone is happy week after week.    Singers and non singers alike.

Everything you have said is out of context.

I speak in generalizations.   If you fall in to the generalization, that's your fault.   Must fit you to a "T".

No games/dance music just honest to goodness karaoke, the way God intended it. :O

Family oriented without all the filler, not watered down.    100% pure & natural, wholesome, non stop, continuos goodness.     14 years and counting. :worship:

The only time I would ever use dance music or games, is if I wanted to totally kill my business.      Dance muisc suicide.        :O

Then if karaoke is to die in my area, I will not try to keep breathing life into it & move onto other forms of entertainment.  If pure karaoke is working for you - then my hats off to you, you would not survive here if you kept that mentality!
