Steven Kaplan @ Thu Jan 18, 2007 4:00 am wrote: While sleep walking to bathroom Steven Kaplan saw: Quote: But thats my point ,,, SS IS realistic for JUST what this site is a KARAOKE site ...NOT a pro site....If you go to a pro site you can sing with backing tracks or karaoke tracks also & GET the "serious" ( I dont like using that b/c I am very serious & truthful with what I say on comments,I understand some may not be but innocent until proven guilty in my book) more "in depth" critique you desire. Its KARAOKE !! Its KARAOKE !! Its KARAOKE !! I dunno ...maybe someone from here serious enough about it could actually "create" another website for SS users to go to for that ??? I just dunno !
This is where my perspective differs Kelley. When *I* listen to a person in the above venue. I'm not listening for "Karaoke", "Karaoke" happens to be their backup band, but this is a VERY specific aspect of the activity. Singer's Showcase to me and some others is just that, a venue within a Karaoke forum "SHOWCASING" the individuals singing. You Critique THEM, not their accompaniment. You RANK THEM, not their backup which just happens in this case to be Karaoke, BUT it doesn't need to be Karaoke backing in Singer's Showcase ! That's the thing.. People play their own instruments, CAN sing a cappella if they wish. Play THEM SINGING along with their bands !! The site although within a Karaoke site SHOWCASES the singer !!! It's more critical for some for just that reason !! If it's "just Karaoke" arguably rank and certainly Critique single out the individual as the show....In most cases however, the singers "backup band" is Karaoke. :::::::::::::::::::sleep walks back to bed:::::::::::::::::::::
Nighty Nite Steven Sweet Dreams ~~~~~
I think you are glorifying this site too much Steven, Its not that serious...IMO....Your delving in TOOO deep for it...In reference to the highlighted line of your post, its usually a karaoke backing here, there are a few "musicians" here I agree, but honestly its very hard to give a critique on a persons labor of love called a song that they have composed from beginning to end..these people IMO maybe would benifit somewhere other than at a karaoke site to showcase their talent, I believe their works to be too important. I believe they would be well suited for a pro site to get honest TRUE critiques. The stuff people get here arent critiques they are comparisons most of the time,(nobody will admit this prolly but oh well). I dont mind the true musicians or very talented singers here I think it does give incentive for people needing that I suppose, But lets not forget that singing is FUN it brings much JOY to people...Alot of people honestly just want you to share their joy of singing most of the time ...thats what Im here for anyway...It can "showcase" the singer & sometimes it can steal all the joy of singing out of their lives with just one stinging nasty comment.
I do respect your views though Steven..

It's my diet :bigcry: I'm sorry
Kelley,
I do understand and respect your perspective on this. For this very reason, I wish the term Critique didn't exist in the current SS atmosphere. Same with Rank. My feelings are these features (since some do take them literally, and have such a right to) introduce a competitive edge (for some) to an otherwise "fun" noncompetitive venue. In having an aspect of "comparison" or "competition" that hones in on individual ability, the "fun and sharing" aspects often are undermined. As I've always felt, Rank doesn't belong at all..Critique certainly doesn't belong in THAT type site... It's deep and intense by its definition. I feel "Rank and Critique" are culprits that disrupt "fun" and simple sharing. I would like to see Critique in a site specifically for those who genuinely wish for the feature, for those that want help growing as singers.. But Critique doesn't belong side-by-side with terms such as "fun", "light" etc on an internet site where often opinions come from unrespected sources.. It's a humbling process, and requires the receiver respects the giver to begin with, If people ignored certain sources rather than became angered by these sources I'd feel differently, but this doesn't happen. I feel "positive comments only" is enough. Leisure, love of an artform, sharing can preclude "scrutiny of ones work"... Hence, "critique" becomes a thorn in the sites side for those that understand what the term means, and wish to apply it, and naturally for some a venue for camouflaged bashing.
JMO..

OK, I have officially sent a PM to both Admin and PHiLL (aka webguru) plus an e-mail asking if our suggestions could indeed be implemented into the Singer's Showcase. I'll update you with whatever response I receive from them.

That's a good idea Don. Realistically, why should people be investing momentum and getting hopes up for change without Administration and Phill explaining the likelihood of our requests even getting heard ? They might very well see things from an entirely different perspective. Not all things in sites are negotiable because in truth, these sites are privately owned, not democracies.

Yes Steven, all of our efforts may indeed be in vain -- we'll see. I or somebody else should have checked earlier into the possibility of Admin allowing our changes. These latest threads took of so quickly that the obvious need to check with Admin got lost in the shuffle.

Yes. I'm sure administration would view the threads if asked to. However as Chuck mentioned this is an internationally viewed site that they wish to be FUN for all. Usually I've asked the mod's or have notified administration directly either by phone, or via PM (or Email) regarding important issues. They respond. Site layout likely has A LOT of thought put into it, and is designed the way it is for a reason. So first I'd propose the idea to them, see if it's up for negotiation at all. So according to the description below, presenting an alteration to them in the form of a poll really isn't a bad idea. As long is things are kept positive.

Steven, I'm not sure I'm following here. What does the fact that this is an internationally viewed site have to do with our desire for some changes?

I'm curious about what Admin takes into consideration when they make any format changes.

Getting back on topic, I'm not a computer programmer, but having worked in a large IS department for a large health care system at one time, the primary focus in designing programs is to create something easy to use with a good return "benefit" and foremost--to simplify it enough to avoid frustrating the customer!

Yes Michael, that was the software programming philosophy at the company I worked at too.
