One LAST basic poll concerning SS from me (I promise!). Actually, you can put any written comments in the other two latest SS related threads or put them here if you'd like. Thanks for participating and giving your ideas.

I put yes on the condition that people could choose not to use it if they don't want to.

Hi Vicki & everyone...

That's how it is today Chuck. I never rank and it doesn't affect the person's score at all.
I voted no, I don't see how a number is helpful in any way, shape or form. Words are what matter to me.

Neo likes the ranking option so I'm fairly certain that others here don't want to completely get rid of it. As suggested, I'm all for a compromise that would allow for both those who want just a critique as well as those who want the ranking option left available. Seems like a simple way to make everybody happy. EDIT: I guess my choice in the poll is no longer valid. Sorry Odie...I should have read the thread first...wish I could do it over.

I voted no this is where competition & ego are born IMO.AND who the heck cares as long as your happy with your singning thats all that should matter. Even if your not Im sure there are other people in your world beyond cyber land that will let you know if you are a good singer or not..well in my case there are 2 beautiful little girls in my life ( my kids ) that ALWAYS tell me what they think of my singing & its NOT always what I "think" is the right answer so we will all listen to the song (original) & go from there. They dont always change their minds either ! A few others in my life too.
But because this site is for karaoke not a pro atmosphere, I dont think rank means anything.

Do away with comments, ranking, etc. all together. If the person is pleased that much with the performance, give the option of sending a PM (or something set up in such a way that you have to take a few steps before commenting--if it's that good or that horrible, it's worth the extra time involved. There are a number of excellent sites out there that operate under this modality with a positive outcome for the most part. Thank you.

Getting back on topic, if the ranking option is still kept, I believe the "Oh My God" and "Barely Listenable" should definitely be removed as as well as "Perfect". The former elected rankings only set up the timbre and tone for perceived nastiness. "Perfect" is hard to put an objective definition one. Replacing the current categories with the the tried and true rating system, used seemingly since time immemorial with "Poor", "Fair", "Good" , "Very Good" and "Excellent".
Any of those is certainly better then seeing "Oh My God" when choosing to rank (as mentioned elsewhere, new members or those never ranking before may already get the impression that using deleterious verbiage is permissable when they write their critique). If anything, put "Oh My God" at the top of the list.

Another suggestion: Movie reviewers have used this for years, the "star" rating system (no words or resultant stigma attached) say a one to four scale, in lieu of a verbal critique, this might work very well also.

With a very few exceptions..... I think just about everyone here could live without any 'ranking' system available. However, MANY would miss the "critque" option ... and most nearly everyone would miss being able to have comments left.
We need NO system of saying ....... "your singing was better/worse than *****'s .... which IS what a rank does at this site. The rank is not you and your execution of a song .... its you vs. others here ~ whether it should be or not, that IS what it is. And THAT leads to a LOT of nasty behaviors.
whether the scale is 1-10 or stars based ... a scale is a SCALE .... a COMPARISON .... and THAT is probably one of the biggest problems here. If you aren't getting 9's and 10's ..... or 4 stars ..... you're feelings WILL be hurt (at least that goes for the MAJORITY of people subbing.
I voted NO ... around here, ranking breeds a slew of nasty comments, unneeded competition, and a LOT of trouble!

Hi to all!
That's a good point Sheree. After reading this thread and the posts made after mine, I have changed my mind about ranking. I don't think the stars would work either Michael for the same reason.
It looks like I will have to find another site for working on my craft. I came here for fun but sometimes I need to submit a song and hear what other people hear in it. If I can't do that here then it is time to look again. It really is hard to find another site where people mostly get along. Search engines can't tell you how the environment of the website is. You have to learn for yourself or listen to word of mouth. If only it was acceptable to have a seperate page for some submissions like the ones I'm talking about.
I'm not whining, it's just a real drag. There is a solution that we could all get along with but some people think it shouldn't be done here at all. I'm not putting anyone down I'd just like to be considered. Thanks guys.
ADDED: I don't plan on going anywhere. I like this website and the people here. It's the atmoshere at this place that keeps me here. What I wrote above might be taken a lot more extremely than I wrote it. Those are just thoughts that I am trying to express the best I can.

Hold a sec, Chuck. Don't you go anywhere ....
I think what most of us are saying is to get rid of the numbers/rank ....... not the "critque". For those of you who truly value the input and suggestions from others, that part would STAY. The only thing that would go ....... would be the numbers (and hopefully, the "competitiveness" and "jealously" that occurs because of those numbers). But ...... certainly, for those that want a written critique with suggestions for improvement, that should continue. Only thing missing would be a "number".
Do you really put a lot of value on the number, or is it what people have written that you are more interested in?
Please don't go away ..... Some of us are just getting to know one another~~~

To CC, Luly, Neo and others interested in this topic.
What do you think of a compromise of having five options rather than the current three available on a submission?
Listen only
Just For Fun
Critique only
Rank only
Critique and Rank
I think most here who would like a critique on a sub would use the "Critique only" option. Do you think this is more cumbersome and confusing to new people? Do you think it would help cool most of the competitiveness that causes ugliness and bad feelings?
This is kind of what I had in mind on my post on this thread. In a perfect world, I'd like to see the ranking system completely gone, but Neo (maybe others) seems adamant about wanting to keeping it.
Neo..I'd be interested in knowing why you would like to keep a ranking system. I've read your points as to why you don't like a critique option due to prior bad experiences. I wasn't here when the harshness and nitpicking was going on regularly but have heard about it from others, so I understand why you hate critiques. Bu,t personally, I can see no benefit to giving or receiving a rank, though I'd like to understand your reasoning behind keeping it.

THIS would be interesting ! If it turns out MOST do not really want "ranking" as a feature, especially if in fact the removal of such a feature wouldn't affect membership or site interest !
I voted to abolish ranking because it becomes a focus, and area of dissension that disrupts sharing found in a less competitive venue. Having that feature is counterproductive in this particular sense
