Well, I respectfully disagree in some cases.  Arguably "Critique" CAN often knock down ones spirit ! Even though knocking down spirit isn't the actual intent... SOMETIMES people are thick, we all can be dense and cocky at times...Critique can cut to the bone in such cases...  IE....  I received this from friends last year... pro-session artists.



Incidently COLLEGE music critiques were MUCH more direct  :shock:  No holds barred !!!!

Most of you really don't know what you are asking for when you request others scrutinize you and your performance... Critique DOES NOT belong in such a casual venue !

These are three of my best friends that told me this !    Turns out I went home, LISTENED to my piano playing on tape and IT WAS choppy as ALL hell,  it was disgusting in fact because I've tightened up, I'm out've practice, yet think I can play flamboyant styles even though I'm rusty as all hell....

They did the right thing !    They are artists presenting this to me in an area of aesthetics... THey aren't psychologists and social workers... They didn't ban together, and ax me without telling me there was a serious problem with my piano playing...  I was rusty as all hell, and COULD NOT hear it while playing...  I still play with them,  In being able to take "Critique" (and believe me I didn't have the oppurtunity to dictate style of presentation obviously) they feel they can work with me, and my place as a musician they call on is NOT threatened by my defensive attitude... CRitique is for the serious musician WILLING to curb his ego...  NOthing less...

Don, regarding the following question:


I believe what members here are presenting poses a conflict of interest with what I'd want as administration which is increased membership because all see it's a FUN PLACE !..  The system works,  a few of the people are what's broken !  

The majority has spoken, SS has it's OWN community definition of "Critique", and love it or hate it, it works and keeps quite a substantial number of members critiquing daily ! AND, albeit a fantasyland definition where EVERYBODY get's a gold and silver star, THE MAJORITY want that, and are quite happy with that, and do not want intensity and restrictions.  People WANT to feel as though they can be a 9.6 average after subbing 7,388 songs. It's fun... "Join our venue where everybody is a Star"..  That's good for membership which brings in $$$$.. Try to think about this from ALL angles Don... Not just the angles of intense artists... THAT alienates the fun for most...  There's a reason Critique hasn't been removed yet... You think these concepts are new and have NEVER been seen by powers that be ?  They HAVE been...

 SS is a large playground for inner-children that want to sing and enjoy themselves... THIS is what brings membership, the contagion from FUN and fluff !!    People have a choice to go with the flow, or deviate from it which would means many will need to learn "live and let live", and getting the majority in fluffer's showcase to accept SEEING Critique isn't going to be easy...  From administration perspective there's NOTHING wrong with the daily number of subs, and people joining in lieu of current offerings over in SS !

This is what *I* would feel as owner of this site...  I would make NO changes to be honest.  I would however if affordable form a separate category titled  "Serious Singers only"... and that would be a closed club people must join !  It would have carbon-copied feature as the current SS too....  It might be a subsidiary of the Singers Forum where members must first join...  It wouldn't be viewable, and would be in closed recital format !  Whether such a feature is affordable ?  I haven't a clue..

Steven and everybody, I can see how Admin might view the quantity of subs and members as being just fine and that there would be no need to rock the status quo from that stand point.  But doesn't Admin have any responsibility as to the "quality of life" around here?  Isn't it obvious that there is a good deal of "suffering" going on with regards to the 'hate comment ping-pong matches' that seem to occur? If it's just up to us to police ourselves, what tools do we have at our disposal that can actually correct any problems?

Thank you Odie, that is my point.  We need those tools to be able to take quick action to keep peace amongst ourselves.  There is no one watching SS 24/7.  You can PM who need be, but they are not here all the time.  Phill has a life like everyone else and we can't expect him to eat/sleep/breathe this place like some of us do (LOL sounds like me the past 24 hours, but hey I've got an excuse, I'm sick with bronchitis!!! hehe).  

Steven, the "Serious Singers' site is really an excellent idea but I think ultimately feathers will get ruffled there too. But I'm all for trying out anything new.

Geez I go to bed and at least 2 threads have been pulled in the time I have been asleep, no prizes for guessing who is behind that.
2 of my threads have been pulled in the past without even a by your leave...and all because same person sees fit to run whining to admin.

I'm going to say something here...... and I HOPE that I'll still have a few friends after I hit the submit button.  

In the last three days, I spent a whole lotta time reading thru the threads.  And the things written in some of them absolutely SHOCKED me.  

I saw people calling one another names, bringing things up from the past that were very personal and hurtful, some being humilitated by NAME, some accusing and others being accused of things NO ONE could prove, I saw references to people's weight, and sexuality  ..... and a gambit of other things.    :puke:

Maybe Admin and Mods ARE reading this stuff .... 'cause I have to say .. if I was associated with this site as an ADMIM or MOD, I too.. would have pulled those threads .. or at least those entries.  

The things I read belonged in PRIVATE PM's.... not on a PUBLIC FORUMS board.  


Please don't get me wrong ... I UNDERSTAND human emotion.  And I UNDERSTAND how things are fueled .... and how they get out of control.  I am far from perfect and I get angry and say and do stuff I shouldn't too.

But ... I for one am happy to see that some of those threads (or at least the nasty enteries) have been pulled.  They made ME feel very uncomfortable ... and I am going to assume that others felt uncomfortable too.  

A public forum is NOT where you air PERSONAL issues.  That is why there are  PM and email features.  

I hope you all know that I like EVERYONE that posts on this board. At this point, I have no reason not to.  I know some better than others ...... but I like everyone .... and I am not trying to side or defend or anything like that....... but I am GLAD some of that stuff is no longer up for viewing and applaud the MOD or ADMIN person who took it down.  Those things were really very mean spirited & did make people very uncomfortable.

So...... is anyone still talking to me, now???  :(

OMG Cindy, I swear we were separated at birth.  I was just writing something similar in the Poll, haha!! You know I will always respect everything you say.  We may not always agree, but I applaud you for your honesty and forthrightness.  I do agree wholeheartedly with you though on this issue.

But i have to disagree on something this stuff with me was very personal indeed...a personal unwarrented attack for NO reason at all except for listening to a sub twice & telling a certain person I did so. Thats ALL I did. Ive "seen" it here happen with THE SAME person MORE than just to me..SO I decided to take it to forum...I had mentioned NO names in that thread...it wasnt until said person came into the thread taunting ( as usual) that the truth was eventually brought out. I WANTED it to be a no name thread for JUST that reason...for people NOT to pick sides & argue but to let people know they DONT have to put up with such crap...Yes its turned into some ugly stuff but its been the constant CONSTANT taunting & goading that has done it. AND some preferential treatment of "some" indiviuals here.

So until things here are TRULY dealt with it wont change IMO

But I still love ya  :hug:

And that is why I feel a BLOCK button would work wonderfully at the SS.

Now, how to stop someone from taunting you at the forums?  Get admin involved.  There is supposed to be 24/7 watch here.  A thread that was started this morning was pulled within minutes.  They are working to stop the problems.

I guess I'm your long last older brother or something because I couldn't agree with you more too!  We supposedly have forum rules around here that do not allow slander, liable, maliciousness, obscenities, etc.  Now either these rules should be enforced or we can all agree to abandon them and those who are still interested in sticking around can roll around in the mud all they want!  LOL   Now I would say that maybe entire threads don't need to be pulled, but some specific posts sure do from time to time! IMO

Cindy, you are a wondeful lady and I totally agree with what you said....Heck when one of those threads are going I am afraid to even post anything for fear it will jump a thread.

Thanks Chuck, Luly, Kelley, Odie and Isis!!! Its a little scary sometimes to stick your neck out ... but on this particular issue .. I just can't see how ANYONE can enjoy reading stuff like ..... or how any MOD can ignore it.  

Now then ..... Ms. Luly ...... what the heck have we disagreed on?  I can't think of to many things, over the years .... can you?

Theyre working to stop the threads. I have seen no evidence of trying to stop the problems ...yet...maybe they'll have some things in the works soon.
