Seriously many people wishing to be ranked almost always wind up with a perfect 10 on this site even though their singing may remind of you of moaning ghosts and those strange sounds only cats produce. The good news is it seems lately people are being a bit more discerning in what ranking they give, so that's a novelty.
I still think my "<" idea could be used in the name of all that is good around here.

I would hate to see what kind of score my subs would bring in a more critical venue.

Again, the important criteria is: if you ask for a critique ("C") and a ranking be prepared! As mentioned throughout, you will ALWAYS get that one oddball that you know nothing about who will drub you thoroughly and go their merry way. Like most, I'd prefer any critical points being made by someone I've heard or who I know has some solid (even semi-solid) musical training. Some of us do have formal musical training (being a pianist before getting into singing myself and there are several other musicians whose submissions appear regularly whose critiques I would take seriously) and some of us hopefully just have discerning ears. And as Steven and others mentioned here, just telling someone they were "pitchy" and "all over the place", etc. is not doing much help. Be specific, try to point out exactly where the problem areas are and most definitely, if possible, give them some suggestions on HOW to improve the problem area.
I watched "American Idol" this evening (only because it was featuring talent from Minneapolis where I live) and some of attitudes of these kids before they came in told me no one really had told them the honest truth about their voices or they never listened to anyone who was trying to help them in a constructive manner. Needless to add, these were the same that were devastated by the judges' opinions (and those people are more than heavy handed in delivering the verdict as it is).

guaranteed 6 points higher than mine LOL .. But hey, I'd start off knowing where I stand, and what's better is I'd be able to look forward to improving, and I wouldn't fear people backstabbing me because they'd just be continuing their laughter from the minute they heard me trying to sing and gave me that well deserved 3 and would be laughing as they say "sheesh, when we told Kappy he should sub, we assumed he had enough common sense to know not to emit such foul sounds in a public coed "G" rated venue".. (and of course I do exercise such common sense and descretion despite the 4AM phonecalls "Kappy please sub in SS"). Honesty in SS would first be met with in a hostile manner as it has been all along. In time honesty would set precedent and breed honesty... Problem is does Karaoke Scene administration wish to risk membership dropping by having SS become a critical site ? Think about it. What brings more members ? Fluff and niceities ? or Critical intensity ? My guess is things are as they are for a reason, and getting back to the original heading.... "It takes what's in the best interest of KS as a business as well to make a change". This is how I'd want it if this were my site... SS isn't broken, it's HUGE.... What some want sounds ideal until you really view options from as many perspectives as possible
I suppose I view it this way. Why blame SS if the problem is too many people submit to a category {Critique} with NO understanding of what that term means and entails ? Then they complain, and sub yet again in C thinking the problem is OTHERS attitude towards them. Realistically the site isn't broken, My feeling is people should at least look the term Critique up in the dictionary prior to submitting to the category... "Scrutiny" is implied.. Yet still, DOES this category belong in a place SO MANY exploit it ? I dunno.. I think NOT

It was just brought to my attention that I unintentionally hit the report button. I goofed ! Plain and Simple.. I had NO clue I even hit it.. Jian was kind enough to ask me about my complaint, and naturally my response was...'
"HUH .. What complaint ? "
I DO NOT request this thread or ANY thread get pulled.. I'm just a few geese short of a gaggle tonight..
My apologies all !
Yes Vicki, I'm going before I break something else.

Hey Steven,
Let me ask a very fundamental question first. If Admin would agree to listen to SS member suggestions, do you think it is possible for us to come to some kind of agreed upon suggestions for change? Is the idea of action instead of just inconclusive discussion possible? Also, how many troops should be sent into SS if the conflicts continue?

, Actually that goes back about a year. I DID in fact have nightmares or dreams as I recall after having meatloaf sandwiches.. Or something like that. I THINK I mentioned that in here..
Something bizarre as I recall involving both Meatloaf and meatloaf.. Vaguely anyway
At least you didn't respond with "I gotta know right now" LOL
later Don

When it comes to things that I perceived could use improvement as I type, at that point I enter this character: < and anything I type after that is not seen by anyone other than the person I am commenting on and myself.
It is very useful and is something that could be easily used without any modifications done to the SS site itself. Luly had asked me to explain this further as I had only alluded to how to do it earlier.
Thank you Michael, I didn't know you could do that.

Yes, there are many personalities on this site and because of that there will always be some sort of conflict. Differing ideas are good and welcome, but knocking down one's spirit is not. There will always be those that don't play fair. And even the most mature of us can get incensed if provoked. This is definitely about control. We NEED some here. I'd like to put some of it in the member's hands for a change. And change we NEED cuz this place is going to hell in a handbasket.
