20 years off road for the job.... ??.... Sheesh, are they hiring any female drivers? I could use a good job, and a move too. (FAR away would be good)

And no, don't try to drink or eat black ice, atleast not in Oregon. You'd surely be ran over by some crazy idiot who was driving too fast and loses control of their vehicle:)

it always amazes me when people lose control on ice. As Tim stated, go to a vacant parking lot (one without the concrete stoppers for the front tires for parking in the center! !), and just experiment with how the car reacts.

When driving, if you feel the car starting to lose traction, take your FOOT OFF the accelerator... shift to a lower gear (if not going that fast), and remember that in front wheel cars you can accelerate a bit to grab the pavement... what some folks might call slightly goosing the foot pedal.

when you turn against the slide, don't OVER compensate... because when it does grab, it'll shoot you the other way fast.

I just remembered last year when I was in Michigan. It was very funny all the drivers that saw my Texas plates where giving me extra room on the road. I already knew how to drive on ice and snow but I don't blame them for being cautious.

The ice might be around for a few more days. Too many people in my area are too impatient to drive on this stuff. It was refreshing to see that clip from Oregon yesterday with the person who just wouldn't take their foot off of the gas pedal. I think that person was very mad and didn't care who they hurt. Very scary.

I suppose since you are in Texas, DOT wouldn't be as prepared for such conditions. However even in Northern states, black ice (when at all significant) is a condition where the state will shut down.  YOU DON'T drive on black ice with an automobile.  They aren't designed to handle on ice.   YOU STAY HOME !

I just heard last night that we may be running out of the ingredient they add to the sand/salt mixture that melts the ice. That will be a big problem.

Steve, we (Alaskans) drive on black ice/white ice almost all winter long (Oct - Mar).  We almost NEVER shut down.  And we laugh our a$$ off at the rest of you who do!

    I know.  Whe Alaskans slide off've the road,  they still have 100's of miles clearance before having to worry about hitting anything though LOL ..  and likely there are a lot of vehicles designed for driving in such conditions (such as snow mobiles) but less densely populated areas, means less cars than an urban mainland suburb or city itself when all hell breaks loose on the roads.  You folks up North also have reindeer, huskies (here ladies just have standard poodles)  also penguins to transport you to and from your igloos when the weather gets bad !  How do you attach chains to a Walrus anyway ?  or throw a saddle on a Seal..  I never understood your vehicles.

I was reading how there're still plenty of inland locations that still can't bring in electricity, plumbing, so no running water, flush toilets, etc.  Hard to believe that there are even hospitals without electricity and plumbing up there.

Only wimps use chains or studs to drive.  However chains and studs (metal) during sex is a completely different matter.

This is in Portland, OR... black ice with snow over it. The street is 20th and Salmon, and it's a VERY steep hill. The driver in the first car should be shot and sterilized in that order! ! The one going down sideways shows you just how steep that hill really is.

This aired all day long on Portland's KGN, and those were uploaded to youtube and eventually pulled. But this one is from Seattle... KGN's sister station!

CT drivers can do those same maneuvers in the summer.

I told ya Oregonians are idiots in the snow. There is the proof. Have you EVER seen anybody nearing a 4 way intersection hit something on ALL FOUR sides of it? Lmao....

Are snow chains permitted in Oregon?

Yeah...... are you kidding? Do you have any idea how many mountain ranges we have here that REQUIRE them for a good portion of the year? The Cascade Range has some big ol' hills..... as does the Sisikiyous:)

The other day, for part of the morning, there was a couple of the highways that were "chains required"... they were giving tickets to those driving without. Watching the above video, you can see why.

But, most people here (besides 4 wheel drives, and even some of those) get studs put in their tires in October or so.

Tell ya what, after having to drive on ice & snow for the first time in this Bronco I have.... I'm thinkin' I better get the back brakes fixed.  LMAO  Stopping (errr... trying to) was not fun:)

I once tried to climb out of Dunedin (very hilly city 2nd largest city in sth island of NZ) towing a horse float with two horses aboard, talk about panic when we started sliding backward on the ice. Luckily there was no-one directly behind and when I felt the first slip we werent too far from where we started. I decided to wait a bit till someone had attended to the road before attempting the climb again

To this day we can still take a model-a Ford with chains and go where any 4 wheeler can go... If I had a choice to get into town one of our big tractors or the model-a.. It has 600x16 narrow tires.. Wide tires are usless in snow or mud...

And it is better on black ice or slick conditions Believe It Or Not...b The only fault it had was the rearend was not a non-slip differential...
