I need to know how to drive when the highways and streets are covered with black ice. Here, we have trucks that cruise the higways to put down sand on the roads. That doesn't mean that it's safe to drive 70 mph but people still do. I usually stay at home on days like this. There are still not enough trucks or sand to cover all of the highways and the streets will not be covered at all.

We have an ice event coming in for this weekend. All we will get is ice. I learned how to drive in snow in Michigan but that is really a different story. Snow makes the ice drivable and they put sand and salt on the roads, all of them.

What do they do in your area to make black ice drivable and how do the civilians drive on it?

Salt/sand on the roads here.  About the BEST thing you can do is avoid it by staying home, and wait untill the storm has passed and the road crews have treated the roads.

If you do find yourself on ICE, drive SLOWLY, don't make sudden turns/acceleration, and if you  start to skid out, turn into your skid.

But again, avoid it by staying home.  No vehicle is immune from ice, unless you put chains on the tires.  I've seen brand new cars with brand new tires, traction controll, and anti-lock brackes skid outta controll on ice.

I got casught in a rain/sleet/snow mix on New Years Eve, when going to my sis's house for a party.  My speed was 30-40mph the entire way.  I say about 10 vehicels in the ditch in the 30 miles it takes to get my sis's house.  And yes there were people passing me going 50-70mph.  One person passed me, going WAY TO FAST, and when they got about 1/2 mile ahead of me I say them spin out and end up in the ditch.  I stopeed to see if eveyone was OK, and they were, but they were stuck in the ditch.  THey asked if I could pull em out, I had a SUV, or use my cell to call for help.  I laughed and said "No, casue you are an idiot for driving that fast.",  but I did call the Hwy Patroll after I left to inform them of the idiot drive that was going way too fasst and ended upo in the ditch, and I went on my merry way.  Yeah a bit cruel, but perhaps they will think next time before driving like a maniac on icy roads.

4WD will help you get going, but it will not help you in stopping on ice.

I would use chains on all four tires...helps dig into the ice, and Im so much of a perfectionist that In my mind I can do anything that most Humans cannot, and most of the time I prove myself to be correct 99.999% of the time.  LMAO  :rotflmao:

Most Humans don't know how to drive much less on Ice!!!  LMAO  LMAO  LMAO

I heard of the ice on the window thing. I can't believe people would do that, but they do.

No snow chains and can't trust my neighbors so I do plan on staying at home. When I was 19 I lived next to a 4-way stop in College Station, Texas. We had a big ice storm while I lived there so I decided to sit on my lawn and watch how well the drivers stopped at the stop signs. Many of them didn't.

You better check your jurisdiction first as to the legality of chains/studs.  Twan is abolutely right about AWD or 4WD when stopping on ice.  I see more of them in ditches than anything else (the drivers of these vehicles of think they are immune to road conditions).  What can stop on black ice? A tank. LOL.

Tips on driving in snow/ice conditions.  If possible make your way to an empty parking lot and drive around it, making turns, stopping, starting, etc.  By doing this you will learn how your vehicle will react and you get practice driving in the white stuff.  Every vehicle reacts differently.  Being alert and gaining experience is the best way though far from a guarantee of an accident happening.  Depending on the snow fall in your area either very good all season or winter tires at the proper air pressure.  Other than that good luck.

Thanks Tim, very good points. One of our cars has AWD but it doesn't weight very much. I don't expect it to handle the ice very well at all.

There's a really good chance that the local area doesn't allow chains. They can't be found around here that I can see.

We have plenty of snow and periodically some ice (usually more of the former than the latter).

Chains/studs are the only effective means of maintaining control on ice (although I've heard about some 'studless' european tires that may work, high $$$ though).  Remember that with chains your max speed is lowered to that recommended by the chain manu ... usually no higher than 35 mph.  Higher speeds result in the chains self destructing much to the detriment of your vehicle.

Steering into a skid works but not with front wheel/all wheel drive where, if you have any control, you drive out of a skid.  Remember, a free-wheeling tire regains traction faster than a tire with power/braking applied.  With a standard transmission this simply means push in the clutch and slowly release after you regain control.

Hi Jian, black ice is the same color as the street so it can't be seen until you are nearly on it.

People here are generally freakin' idiots when we get black ice, freezing rain, stuff like that. You would naturally THINK that, being Oregonians, they would learn to drive in bad weather conditions, but they don't.

You always get your freaks who think they can drive hell bent for leather because they're in a 4 X 4.... Not me. I've slid down a hill and off an embankment once on freezing rain.... Charmin drives s-l-o-w-l-y on nasty roads:)

Edit: Oh, now that did NOT answer your question. Everyone here usually has studs put in their tires. I don't, I have pretty decent mudgrips... I do fine, I just don't take stupid chances. But most all regular passenger cars & trucks here get them. Nobody uses chains, unless they carry them on a trip over one of the mountain passes here or something...

It's what we freeze to use in dark colored sodas so that when it melts, you don't get the clear water floating on top of your soda. It tastes better too:)

Not much I can add to the above advise except for a couple of things.. Drive like you got a glass of water sitting inthe seat and you cant spill it .. If you have over drive use it.. Most bgridges and overpasses are esp icy.. If you are encountering icy in spots like snow blowing across the road  tap brake before on the dry te coast thru..Dont accelerate or decelerate.. Keep the steering wheel steady..

I saw a gal in a ford bronco spin like a top on the interstae adout 50 times then come a halt on the side of the road I stooped her and the kids were sitting there plum white.. You alright???  She finally drove away at a very slow speed.  We used to pull car hoods in the fields for sleds and slide around Sometimes drive out on  lake... The lessons learned there probably saved my (@$%&#!) a few times when it counted.. Every teen should do that at least once...

The problem here in the Willamette Valley of Oregon is that we don't get black ice/ice for long enough periods of time.  You don't really get a chance to fully learn how to drive in it with confidence.  By the time it comes around next year, you've forgotten how to drive in it  -- at least I do.

I was driving home back into Portland one night in '95 after having played bass out in Oregon City.  I was going down a hill on the highway in my old '72 Impala (not a good car for ice driving by the way).  Suddenly, I noticed my car was NOT going in the direction I was steering it! Of course I didn't think things through quickly enough and I slammed on the brakes a wee bit too hard!  Well, the car then swerved into the lanes of oncoming traffic, spined completely around two times, eventually swerved back into the proper lanes where I ended up on the right shoulder of the road facing the oncoming traffic.  A car that had been way behind me from the start saw all this happening and tried to stop in a hurry too, but he crashed into a tree followed by a big truck, etc.  During the time I had lost control of the car the old song 'Honeycomb' was playing on the radio.  So whenever I hear that song on the radio it conjures some rather exciting memories!  Ahh, good times!  Good times!!! LOL

Charmin, that's just something we tell women to see if they'll eat the ice. LMAO
