I havnt Kj'd for about 6 months now due to karaoke in this area has almost died... Guess Im fully retired now ans with all tyhe snow Im really getting cabin fever now... Im about like Matt about ready to forget about it and sitting here with one of the better systems.. So if you wonder why Ive had an attitide lately now u know LOL

I spent years on shore patrol working with cops and others all over I know when somebody is playing a role and when somebody is genuine and it doesnt take a huge amount of talent to do it..Knowing that when somebody aspires to be someone they imitate the best Then at one magical moment they become one in their own right. Then yougnuns look up to them and imitate them..

It doesnt take a huge amount of talent to be a KJ anybody can sit down and run drunks thru a rotation.. But in any small business the owner and everybody involved has to be able to deal with all the obligations and duties that the business reqires whether it's public relations or handling emergencies.. I can talk or listen to some one for 5 min and tell how much qualifications they have, This comes from many many job interviews.. In fact a successful kj realizes that most of the things discussed here are only a fraction of the overall business..

In any business especially one that involves a fast changing technology as electronics takes an open mind, the curiousity of a child and a never ending search for whats new... I know because I have been in electronics professionally since 1960... And was a geek before that..

In many situations and many bars I have had braggarts beating their chest and claiming to be something they were not.. I had them for breakfast .. NowIm not saying there are people on here that arte playing roles but I will tell you what... I am what I am... I know what I am.. I know who I am and whom my God is and I dont need to verify these things with no one except me and my God.. I found me long ago and my God and I dont need a forum or any means to do this..

Ther are many people on here that are a genuine KJ and I know who they are
LMAO

Website on profile.  KJ'ing since 1991.... so many places over the years, that I couldn't begin to list them all    Yes, that would mean we've been in the biz for 15 plus years.

We are listed in the phone book as:
Entertainment, Sassy ..... LOL .... which gets us some very interesting calls at 2 and 3 am .....!!!   LOL *Not the yellow pages*  ..... we didn't even realize we were in the phone book until the "calls" started coming in at those hours.

.... currently .....

Thurs 8-1  =  Tabu Cafe, Upstate NY
(every other) Friday 9-2 =  Anchorage Restuarant and Pub Upstate, NY

If references are needed ... they can be provided.

And for the exact, time consuming reasons you just listed, I have no web site.

BigDog ..... a website is really no more time consuming than the time spent at forums such as these, once they have been "built".  Actually, I find myself taking more time here some weeks, than I do updating the website..... and I notice you are here pretty much daily too.  You'd be surprised at how little time you actually spend on it ... vs ..... the benefits.

And building a site isn't all that hard or time consuming in itself.

Our regular followers really enjoy our website.  We have our catalog online, pictures from the shows each week and a blog for them to make song requests or just chat with one another if they wanna.  Its a big PLUS .... mostly for the singers.  We also have a wedding section, which allows folks a chance to "hear" about how we do things .... price listings, etc.....

In this day and age .... having INTERNET visibilty is a good (if not expected) business practice, IMO.

Just food for thought.    :)

I started in the KJ biz about 7 years ago as a part time job.  I've since worked pretty much steady at least 1 day a week and for some time 3 nights a week which was hard with my full time job. I also do some regular DJ gigs along with a Karaoke Twist.  No web site and I don't advertise. Every gig I got was from word of mouth mostly from my Karaoke customers.

That's My Story and I'm sticking to It !

I may not have 14 years experiance. But I do have a website that I spend way to much time on. I now only KJ two nights a week, only because a have a full time day job and my wife is expecting. I believe I am what people here like to call a hack, I play music to fill, I cus on the mic, I occasionally throw thing at people, But one thing that is important to me is I have fun as well as others around me do. Anways sorry about the rant. I work in Gretna and Omaha in Nebraska. Both bars are in yellow pages. And I have also worked for a major karaoke company in Nebraska for around 4 years. I can get refrences if need be. And kjchrisc my mom says I LOL 'm the best so there.

Okay. I'll go ahead and state my stats since I still plan on being a karaoke host at some point.

I've KJed for 13 years off and on, mostly off. I used to be a regular KJ there about 6 years ago.
I have several websites but none for karaoke.
I don't have a current location since I'm only a fill in KJ and not even part time.
I have filled in at Mary's Outpost recently. It's in the yellow pages and has a website. I am their webmaster.

I have mostly stayed out of the KJ forum because I am way out classed there and get completely lost in the discussions.

I can't offer any advice because all I know about the current hardware is what we use at Mary's. It's far from top of the line. I also know about my own system which I bought on recommendations from this site, mostly Lonnie.

Another reason I stay out of the KJ only threads is because it is a place where the KJs can vent. Since I'm not a current full-time KJ, I have nothing to vent about that's on topic.

For these reasons I feel unqualified to be in the KJ group. I could be wrong, I often am.

I think you are wrong Chuck, The fact that you KJ at all should allow you to be in the KJ group.  Thats only my opinion which isn't worth much and by the way as much as I know about everything even though I have never been a KJ.....Just the fact that I know more than most KJ's That alone should allow me to be in that group!!!  LMAO

Its sad when someone who has never been a KJ knows more about what it takes to be a Great KJ than people who are actually KJ's and have been for some time!!!  LMAO

Then these hacks will say yeah!!!! Right!!!!! Sure you do!!!!

Bigdog has 14 years experience and I know more than Big dog about what It takes to be a Great KJ......Why?????  Because I learned from the best KJ team I have ever seen and became friends with them and hung out with them and got them to teach me everything they do and what equipment they use and how they use it and adjust it for each venue according to crowd and room accoustic's...etc.

If I wanted to be a KJ....All I have to do is get off my lazy butt and fork out some money and buy one of there systems that they don't use anymore because they are retired and have offered to sell one of them to me along with disc and everything I need to get started and I would be a KJ and already know what to do to run a great karaoke show.

But right now I really don't know if I would even want to fool with it simply because I don't like working with or for the public!!!!  LMAO Too much of a pain in the butt if you ask me!!!!!

So for now I will continue to do nothing!!!!  LMAO  LMAO  LMAO

So chuck atleast you do KJ ...Be it full or part time or fill in or have full time in the past or whatever!!!  :biggrinthumb:

I must not have read what the benefits are of being in the group. 8-)

I am a beginner at Karaoke. I never sang at all until I was 50 years old, other than happy birthday and standing around the once-a-year piano. I started singing when I quit smoking -- I had just seen karaoke at a bar, enjoyed it, and thought I would take up singing as an incentive to stop smoking. (I am still smoke free 18 months later now.)

I have many, many, web sites that I take care of but none of my own related to
karaoke. My location is in my profile, and I can be found in the area most of
the time.

I have been bitten by the bug, and am now heavily into this as a hobby. I just did my fourth gig as an amateur KJ. I have over 400 CDGs, a powered mixer board, rack, and pro-quality microphones. I am in SE Indiana, and you can't look up my gigs because I don't play in bars. My next scheduled public gig will be at the Whitewater State Park Saddle Barn on Halloween 2007. Be sure to wear your costume as my wife and I will also be judging the costume contest. :)

Go down to the appropiate building and register your business then pay taxes on your profits Register with local buisiness chapters and advetizze as a viable business If you havnt done established your business in this fashion then you are a wannabe...

This might be the one difference between a phoney and wannabe. Are you registered as as a business and  and taxes on profits? How many here can give give proof of a non-tax licence ?  Lets get real people ... And quit pretending .. Are you registered with the BBB ???

REALITY CHECK...

REALITY CHECK...

1. You don't have to "register" your buisness in a lot of locales.

2. You don't have to have a tax ID to be a business.

3. There are a lot of crap business working with local busines chaperters/chambers.

4.  Thousand upon thousands of business are not registered with the BBB.

Thinks you need to come up with different criteria.

Based on the criteria, I am not even a hack. KJed in the good old days about 14 years ago. Filled in a couple times since. Never owned equipment; it belonged to the bar. I loved it and I miss it and there is no freakin' way I could possibly fit it into my schedule right now. But I love to read the "pro" topics in case maybe maybe someday I can get back into it.

Let me tell you what I AM, though; I am not in a position to say who on this site is a good or a bad KJ unless I have heard their shows. Danny (meep70), Steve and Ryan (xx and Saturday Singer), and Richard and Susie (Full House) all run GREAT shows and each has its own personality. I understand that Lonnie is great, too, but I have not experienced his show.

Each show, each KJ and each business is different and consequently is...and SHOULD...be run differently.

Please let me know if I have been voted off the island and I will GLADLY remove myself from the KJ only group.
