In all the time I've been a KJ I've never come up with a good comeback for someone who says "awww, you don't really want everyone ot leave, do you?"
What do you do when you're trying to get someone new to sing and you get shot down with this answer?

Good thread !!! I cant wait for more responses !! I tell em everyone in this world can sing...its just a matter of finding the right song & I give'em a book...Dont know how "snappy" that is but that all I can think that I say right now..

Use reverse psychology and tell them that's EXACTLY the reason you want them to sing--to clear everybody out.

Of coarse I want everyone to leave... Then I can be alone with you.... (but that only works for YOU if it is a woman)

If it's a guy you can say...Of coarse we want everyone to leave Dawn thinks your hot and she wants to be alone with you......

How's that???

You are in luck there... You are so hot she shouldn't want to ever be with anyone else.....

I had one lady at a show that everytime I asked she would tell me the only place she was going to sing was in the shower... So we bought PVC and put together a frame and installed a shower head with curtain and everything... when she told me that we wheeled it out just for her... she was so tickled that she sang and was pretty darn good. The next week we couldn't get the mic out of her hand... LOL
I've had a few that would tell me if they sang the place would clear...tell them just think of William Chong and how much money he made because he sang badly... it isn't how you sing it's how enthusiastic you are when you sing..... besides I tell them... I've heard worse I can guarantee it....

We did something like that as well, wasn't for one specific person, but for anyone that wanted to use it - shower head & handles glued to the frame.  It sat off to the side of the stage.  Got used every once in a while, finally got rid of it.  We were also going to build the stage around the front end of a real car all the way to the dashboard, steering wheel & 1 bench seat, but got into looking at the financial aspect of it, wasn't worth it.

I like the William Hung line.

This is not "snappy", but it is true: I tell them, everytime someone has told me that, they usually sing very good, and it has been true, so far. I also tell them that everyone of my singers had to start somewhere, so they are not going to boo them if they do sing. Or, if I've had a 'not-so-good' singer already, I'll say" Did you hear so-and-so; you can't be worse than that" (go ahead, let the flaming begin...)

LMAO I've heard that one a lot. I just tell them it's karaoke and meant to be fun. I like the comment about it not being American idol. I will probably use it.  :D

I think this is a great topic !

I find people who are new to karaoke do stupid things not realizing it is wrong. Like swinging the mic by the cord. Sometimes if I know it is their first time and they are wound up I'll say " Remember keep your hands to yourself, no screaming, swearing, and come out of your corners singing." It is kind of a funny way of getting my point across.

Done that before, their response was 'Yeah & look at everyone who cringed at them'.  Then you have to reply, 'but look at how much fun they had singing' - which is the whole point anyway, not to be the best, but have a great time doing it!  Sometimes that works too!
