I thought maybe this guy would be a breath of fresh air as well, but after reading his comments on a certain submission today, I think it's pretty obvious this guy is either fluffing up his friends, or just plain doesn't know what he's talking about...case in point, these are his comments......
CRITIQUE: Did you say "to me" or "do me"? in the beginning of the song? I am not 100% certain, but you might want to check that lyric. Flat spots were minimal despite this song being extremely difficult to stay right on pitch. Even attempting to do this song simple justice is pretty gutsy. The fact that you not only did this song justice..... but did such a sweet job on it is very impressive. Your voice works very well for this song. You sang this song just the way Freddy did and sounded pretty darn good doing it! Considering the difficulty level of this submission, I would have to say that overall this was a near perfect performance. ...............X
And this is the submission...... http://www.singersshowcase.com/song.php ... act2=47189
Now I mean no disrespect, but that submission was nowhere near perfect, actually it was a little south of average, I think it's pretty obvious this listener X guy is not legit, just my opinion of course.

there is never going to be a way to please everybody.
It is however refreshing to hear an honest opinion once in a while, with Listener X being under scrutiny over the last few days, I wonder how much longer he can in fact remain impartial and honest.

And you would say his appraisal of that submission was "honest"??.. ....either those two are pretty chummy, or he doesn't know what he's talking about, if your going to keep it real, keep it real for everyone.

I'm not going to go as far as to say Listener X isn't legit in his opinions overall, but like Nathan I thought that Listener X was way too lenient on this particular song. Not sure why though.

I hadnt caught up with that one LMAO yep I listened to that sub and my opinion was the same as yours Nathan.
I simply opted to say nothing rather than say anything that would offend
have just read what X put there and I am saddened really. I had hoped that we had finally found someone with a bit of integrity that could stand the strain and use the annonimity to remain focused and impartial.
Obviously I was incorrect

I really do believe that there is a place for an honest assessment of a sub.
Not a tearing to bits kind of thing that is dependant upon what side of the bed you got out of or if you have fallen out with the person subbing (the latter does seem to happen a lot)
But just an honest assessment, guess there is never going to be someone who can do that

Chuck2 @ Tue Jan 09, 2007 10:12 am wrote: Here's another thought about that. I would like to be able to submit songs for critiquing but without the rank. When I have submitted songs with a "C" it is to hopefully learn some things that I can't hear myself in the recording. To me rank has nothing to do with it.
I agree with you completely Chuck. If you could ask for- and GET- honest critique, without a number attached... that would be nice.
A couple years ago, you really could get some honest feedback here. I use to, every now & again, sub an original song... for critique. I'd get comments like "you need to speed this up, the beat don't fit the song" or "you should drop this down a key, you're straining too much" or... telling me where to add or take things away. It wasn't always a full critique from every listener, but it was far from this "PERRRRRFECT" that gets handed out all the time now.
Yes, I know, I fluff people's butts a little too.... but not too awfully much. And not when it's C category. But it's my opinion that that's what (most) people want anyhow.
I don't usually speak my mind ( wait a sec, I'm not finished with that sentence...)
I don't usually speak my mind regarding what I really think of the critiques here, cause basically.... alot of the people subbing under C and getting great comments on songs that kinda stink are my friends. And I know they don't wanna hear it, out of me or anyone else.... So, for a long time now, I've changed my thinking.
This place, to me, is NOT a place to ask for- nor expect- honest feedback. It's a place to have fun. Kind of a "hey guess what, here's a song I tried out today....". End of sentence.
It would be nice if you could get it here, but it will NEVER change from the way it is now. You have packs of friends, they will NOT be honest with each other. Heck, I continually hit flat notes, I don't have much of a range... and I push myself to try songs I shouldn't try, cause I want to sing them anyways. Nobody, I repeat, NOBODY will tell me things like that...... save one person, who tells me in private. And I've asked him- repeatedly- to say it out loud on my subs. But he doesn't want to. I can sub a song I'm really unsure of, get all kinds of applause.... only to later get an email from a certain friend saying "Yikes, you better take that one down and practice it a bit.... you're all over the charts with that one" But not ONE other person said so... Not only did they NOT say so, they fluffed me to bits:)
Not saying I am against that, don't want that, hate people for doing that.... I'm not asking anything more than a listen & a comment to say hello. I don't sub C- ever anymore. Because of the simple fact, that I wont get it, and people will think that I truly believe the fluffy stuff. <------ (no offense to Keith's wife, of the same name) haha
As to Listener X, I'm with Nathan. The comments seemed legit at first, but I see him/her working in a circle. I am certain it's a regular here, and I'm almost certain I could name the person. One thing throws me off though: Either this person HATES country music, or hates anyone who may sing it better than he/she does. (or better than his/her good buddy does) Judging by a comment or two that I've seen:) Just an observation....

...... Hiya back Nathan.
And you're right... Seby seemed to always be honest without putting people down.
You know, it's funny, when she first came here..... lawdy me and her butted heads in the forums... LMAO ... but we've laughed it off since then. She came to be one of the people who's dosing of honesty was refreshing IMO.

Yes they are..... it's been a while since we had any news though.
Good lord, I recall how moody & outspoken I always was in my last term of pregnancy.... perhaps we don't want her back to critiquing "just" yet:) haha

Just to clarify, I meant the circumstances were creepy, not the song...

Good thing you *clarified* there Nathan, that could be easily misread.
Maybe I'll scoot on into SS, I gotta catch up my listens tonight anyhow, I'll make JVJ my first. I haven't heard him in ages...
See you all another day. We are expecting a buncha snow here tonight, so I gotta go put hay in the dogs' beds and batten down the hatches, and all that jazz. (yeah, right, it'll turn to mushy rain knowing the Willamette Valley) Just send up a prayer for us... that we get SNOWED IN COMPLETELY!!!! I'm dying for a total white out:)

Ok, I have sat by long enough....I have read over Listener X's comments(yes, I have listened to most of the people he critiqued/commented on and for the most part, I have to disagree with most of his stuff, and then again...some of them I have to agree with. He commented on one of my subs and I took it with a grain of salt. Yes, I know, I have selected to have my subs ranked/critiqued, but if the person really doesn't know what they are talking about, then I wish they would keep their responses to themselves.Be honest with me and don't try to suck up just to get me to like you. I also have to agree with alot of the comments on this thread, if he's legit....then let's see his credentials and/or hear a sub or two from him. Oh yeah...make sure the critiques/comments are about the song, please don't mention having to go change underwear or having chills from toes all the way up....that is highly uncalled for. - Tonya

arent you missing the point Tonya? Just becos someone can sing what makes them any more qualified to critique? I would prefer someone who doesnt sing yet knows music inside out and definately doesnt sub here to be a more objective critique
Sadly I feel Listener X has proven himself to be less than objective.
If you put a C by your name in a public forum be prepared to...
1. get fluffed by your friends
2. get fluffed by those keen to get you to respond in kind on their subs
3. get those who dont know wtf they are talking about to give their pearls of wisdom cos its gonna make them feel like someone for a few mins
That is about the sum of it
Oh and one more thing...if you sub under C dont take it personally
And that wasnt meant as a dig at you it was meant to all and sundry including myself. I have been so conditioned to the fluff that when you actually do get someone ready to give an honest opinion the first knee jerk reaction is to bristle
and that is kinda sad

Morgan, I am sorry that you feel so wounded by the comments that people give you. I have to disagree with you on "I would prefer someone who doesnt sing yet knows music inside out and definately doesnt sub here to be a more objective critique" The issue isn't whether or not someone knows music inside and out, or how well they sing that makes them a good judge; it's their ability to be open and honest. I have observed my music director at church when he deals with vocal problems...he doesn't skirt the issue, but goes directly to the point and deals with it. He doesn't 'sugar-coat' and say 'oh you sound so great' when we all hitting sour notes all around the board. He let's us know we stink. The same thing applies here on SS....I want the truth...if I stink, then by all means tell me. Don't say things like...'awesome performance, you gave me chills' or "a perfect 10" when I know it's only about a 3 or 4.(trust me, I am my own worst critic.)

huh? trust me I have never been wounded honey this is R&R for me, I still get booked and I still get paid, when that dries up I would be wounded.
As far as you being your own worst critic I believe we all are and I am not sure I see why you are getting all hot n bothered considering you are echoing what I have already said just packaging it different

I know I am not that great of a singer and I don't need anyone telling my otherwise. (have you listened to any of my subs lately?) I don't claim to know a lot about music, but I do, however know whether or not something or someone sounds good(or awful). That's just my opinion and most of the time my opinion doesn't amount to a hill of beans.
