Jesse,
I’m paid to sing, I guess that makes me a pro, but only at the very bottom of the pro level.
To be honest I’m surprised that anyone wants to listen to me sing much less pay me for it. However, as with anything else I’ve taken up in my life, if I’m going to sing I’m going to put into it whatever effort it takes to do the best that I’m capable of doing. A while back a friend of mine gave me some karaoke disk and I started singing along with them while driving to work. That’s when I started searching the net and found this site. A few months later I got up enough nerve to get up and sing. That’s a lie – I sat in a chair and sang. When I found this site I enjoyed the Showcase and found myself wishing that someday I’d get good enough to sub a song. To make a long story short, good enough or not I finally subbed a song and to my surprise the Showcase members really like it. For me this was like having my fifteen minutes of fame. When I listen to some of my recorded songs I hate them. As I’ve said before, I’m aware if a song I record sounds off. My problem is that I’m not capable of telling what’s wrong with it. It’s like art – I can tell you when it’s a master piece by the way it makes me feel inside but there is no way I’d ever be able to create it. Therefore I always put a “C” along with my subs. The ranking doesn’t mean anything to me but I really appreciate honest opinions and comments. Several of the full time pros in my area use CDGs as well as I. On my nights off I will go out and sing karaoke for fun and to try out new songs. If you or anyone here has any advice, I’ll take all the help I can get. Also correct me if I’m wrong – there’s a difference between listening for pleasure and listening in order to critique.
Jackson

I agree with you - also I can't really critique my own song much less someone eleses. I will comment on the ones I really enjoy listening to.

Actually I thought Listener X done a Great job on his Critique's LMAO
I just figured that while we were being Honest that I would throw my honesty out there and see what kind of crap would hit the fan!! LMAO
Great thing about it is....I learned a lot from you guys!!! :handshake:
and Gals
Anyway....I am impressed with everything you all had to say about this subject and I have walked away with some knowlege from it!!!! :biggrinthumb:
Truth be known I would like to sing for a living myself if I had the chance.
Atleast Listener X done it in a more technical & professional manor and didn't leave people angry and ticked off or hurt and people actually learned from listener x's advice.
This was much better than what I have seen in the past!!! :D
Ok....Now that you all see what a real nut case I really am....Please continue on!!
I'll be here somewhere learning and listening and watching!! LMAO

ZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzz..
(The phone bill I mailed saturday really took a lot out've me, I probably should've driven next door instead of hoofing it)
Oh yeah, speaking of lazy where is everybody in here ? The one hour I sit up in bed to type in here and read stuff, all you lazy folks are sleeping ? HAHAHAHA... Look who's calling others lazy, Heck, next they'll be telling me I should move out've moms basement, and get a job !

Good evening Vickie. (I'm catching on to our time differences finally) LOL
Quote: steven gives great critiques and have you heard him sing?
Did Billy (OK what now) ever tell you the strange phenomenon regarding what happened to his already dead dog after my singing made it down to to Gulf area ? Poor dog rolled over in his grave and started barking and howling so badly the animal came back to life but is now deaf. Btw, save those peeled paint chips for me Billy. Next time I visit I'll have some munchies ! Paint chips are an old ritualistic Kaplan family delicacy ! Ive been eating them for years !!!! Family Doc even says that's likely the reason I'm so special !

Quote: Jesse, I think this website is about the fun first.
Which is why a "Critique" and rating category in an immature setting is counter-productive. By definition "Critique" -first and foremost- includes the term "scrutiny". An in depth analysis of an individuals performance often will preclude "fun and hobbyist". In my case, I was a professional touring musician, was this fun ? HELL NO. Now I am just a hobbyist, meaning I can walk away from music and play in here at will, THAT is more fun ...
Again, BEST ways to kill a fun artform !
1) Subject it to competitive format in such a subjective area where political aspects
usually prevail. (This is no music conservatory, What is the criteria for highest
ranking singer, and best Critiques if not politically driven in THIS setting) ?
2) Ask people that in most cases haven't a clue what the term or process of
"Critique" means to do something that turns out to make such a term
tantamount with "Bust my chops", "Sock it to me", "Please throw a pie in
my face", "Throw eggs at my performance", etc.
Critique is a serious process that involves A LOT. Those that wish for a critique but instead can only handle (and in reality only wish for) flowers being thrown their way set themselves up for A LOT of hurt in such a setting ! Critique if such a category is to exist at all should be in a SEPARATE area of SS... "Serious musician category"...and not the "Singing for fun only" categories.. A casual hobbyist that doesn't want scrutiny of his/her work has NO right to ask for "C". (Of course similarly those not educated and qualified to offer a Critique have little right playing music professor, and turning such a process into a hack job)
The reality being, ALL OF YOU that ask for a "C" are being paid a complement when a person actually takes the time to listen pensively and give you an honest constructive and well-intended thoughtout analysis as to how you can IMPROVE. The process believe it or not IS constructive. However, all 10's and kudo's does nothing to constructively help you (it does however stroke your ego's which in many cases become inflated to the point that the real world will pop you in a heartbeat) ! Critique takes time, it's a serious process, and the true Critiquing party is trying to do what you ask which is HELP YOU become a better singer (even if you are just a hobbyist who wishes to improve). Those of you that wish to spit at the person critiquing you, and throw tantrums because "you think you are better than they say", are killing the process.. It's up to the submitting party in SS to know their boundaries, and state THEIR OWN needs. Don't expect those of us trying to help you to be Clairvoyant, and know you might not be tough enough to handle more than pampering. When you ask for a public critique and honesty in a universally viewed forum, like ALL else in the limelight you better be able to take harsh realities because those of us that dare fulfill your typed wish WILL look like the ogre in such a dishonest enviroment. The realities of others opinions whether you ask or not ARE being felt and not said to your faces anyway despite what others say to you in a comment box (white lies in most cases)..What this means is that in the vast majority of cases, those of us reading the XOXOXOXOX's you receive and (all sorts of accolades) in the "Critique" boxes (assuming we care to see you improve which presumably you do wish to improve by subjecting yourself to "C"), are cringing at the lies you are receiving. Ironically, the person castigated for their honesty is the one who dares to grant you your request or "Critique" you. The phrase here is aka "@$$-backwards". speaking of which !
I need to go now ! I'm still really gassy... Oops, wrong forum for that (it's a middle-aged guy thang doncha know) plus Hormel chili was on sale :(

I would agree with Steven's opinions on this topic. :worship: But I would advise going for the 'without beans' style of chili especially if eating at night.

Being that karaoke and this forum are meant for fun I never had a problem with people being supportive to the not so good singers by giving praise not critism. It is not the norm over in SS to give critism. I find it refreshing someone is actually doing it in a positive way as long as the singer is asking for a C. :hi5:

Here's another thought about that. I would like to be able to submit songs for critiquing but without the rank. When I have submitted songs with a "C" it is to hopefully learn some things that I can't hear myself in the recording. To me rank has nothing to do with it.
If we could choose ranking separated from "C" it might make a big difference. I really only want a rank on something that I consider to be a finished product. To me a rank finalizes what has been done and "C" means that I know it needs improvement, please offer suggestions.
It is not necessary to slam anyone in a critique or any kind of listening situation. Offering advice on how to improve does not require a poor attitude and lack of resource that a slamming comment implies.
Singers Showcase to me seems to be a place where we can share our craft with other crafters, be it hobbyists or professionals. I can listen to perfect renditions played all day long. If I want to hear that I might just play the original instead. I like to hear people enjoy themselves. If they totally screw up a song but have fun in spite of that, I get to share in their fun by listening. I figured this out when I was 19. I saw a man dancing at a bar with a different dance partner every time he got up to dance. He was a horrible dancer. The amount of pure joy on his face brightened up my whole week. After that I would think to myself whenever I had to turn something in for work, there is a new category for what it's worth to me. Firstly, did I complete the task as prescribed, secondly, is it up to their and my standards and ready to turn in, thirdly but still very important, do I still get a feeling of accomplishment if I turn it in like this? I have answered questions on tests occasionally with the wrong answer just because I liked it better than the right answer. It was funnier. My point is what's it worth to me?
Ever since then I always ask myself about anything, what is it worth to me? A product may sell for $19.99, it's it's not worth that much to me I don't buy it.
In the future I will sub songs just for fun that I don't want suggestion on but I will want to know if the listeners like it at all. Sometimes I do stuff that I can't possibly perfect just for fun.
