I know SwingCatKurt highly recommends this form of karaoke for a change of pace. Has anybody else had much luck and fun trying this?

I got to try it out for the first time last night in a bar called Lefty's. Only got one song in because I got there late, I arrived at 10 and they stop at 11. They didn't have a big selection but the band was pretty good. I guess there is another place that has it in Oregon but the band is pretty new there, Lucky's band has been together for a while.

Hey Odie
I did "Something To Talk About" by Bonnie R. It wasn't very different. Easier actually because they let you know when to sing and can help out if you need it. I don't know I could do it if I was drunk though. The band can change key a lot easier but the mic is pretty much set. They even had a host that would get the singers songs and intro them.
Ginger

So the band will kind of cue you when to come in if you need help with that? You never drink a lot anyway so there's no big problem from that end! LOL

The band was very supportive but I knew the song pretty well. I was with someone who tried some new stuff and she still sounded great. A live band is a lot more versatile but I'm glad I knew the song real well anyway.
They had print outs of lyrics so we could refresh before hand. That would be helpful at regular karaoke but probably not feasable. The lyrics for singing were not always right though. In just the song I sang I noticed the middle of the chorus was wrong and they had too many repeats on the sheet that we didn't end up doing. My friend said it was common that there were errors in the lyrics since I guess they get them from the internet. I've noticed the same problem in a lot of the lyrics I get for songs I want to try also.

Sounds like somebody should proof read the lyric sheets. But that would take a lot of work on somebody's part. Still, it'd be important to get them right for singers who may not know the song real well.
Even though you only did one song with them, did you feel like singing with a band could be a fun and rewarding thing to pursue?

Here in Vegas they have "Rock Star Karaoke". It is at the House of Blues on Mon. & Tues. The band rocks. There is a floor monitor with the words to the song. It isn't totally like the words with karaoke tracks but if you get into trouble the band can carry you if needed. You have to get there early because it fills up fast. They do 3 sets with about 15 singers. The song list isn't huge but it has a little bit of everything. We go quite often and it really is cool. If you are ever in Vegas, you have it check it out!

My friend said not all the lyrics are wrong, I just happened to pick one that was different than I knew. It didn't screw me up or the band. I still got a huge applause.
I would love to be in a band that performs. It's always been my dream to be a real singer with a recording contract and songs I wrote myself to perform. Ahh. :yum:

Hi babs.
Yah there are TONS of karaoke bars. Within a half hour drive of my home is at least 13 that I know of. I'm finding out about more every day. 2 in Woodburn, 2 in Canby, 1 Mulino, 4 Salem, 1 Tualitin, 1 Brooks, 3 Oregon City. Those are just the ones I know about.

Good to see you here... I see you haven't subbed a song yet. We need to work on getting you to recording if you're not yet. We gotta let these people hear you:)

The band in Portland is Karaoke From Hell. They play at Dantes downtown on 2nd & Burnside on Monday nights and at The Gemini in Lake Oswego on Thursday nights. They have a 400 song songlist and help you with the starts and stops. Its a 5-piece band and theyve been doing this for over ten years. Probly were the originals to do "Karaoke" with a live band. Certainley on the west coast.

Dantes usually is quite crowded--much larger audience so you might be able to get up once or twice in an evening. Plus parking is attrocious downtown. Better bet is the Gemini--smaller crowd--more opportunities to sing.
As to karaoke bars around Portland, Vancouver, Salem areas--there are DOZENS and DOZENS and DOZENS.

nothing beats a live band, unless its a live band that sounds dead...
i sang in a band an i'm not sure which i like best, i guess looking back hands down it would have to be a live band, but everything has its downsides...
with a live band u have someone to blame if you mess up....and i always did....mess up i mean, an blame them ... ![lol lol](./images/smilies/emot-LOL.gif) l...thats what there there for right?...
karaoke ur pretty much on ur on...its on ur shoulders, but right now i have much more fun doing karaoke then i did with a live band, over a period of time it just becomes a job just like anything else....then there goes the fun....
in a dance/show band we had to play what THEY wanted to hear not what we wanted to play, that means 6 nights a week we played alot of the same songs over and over, boreingggg... ![lol lol](./images/smilies/emot-LOL.gif) ...but it was a job, u do what it takes for the club owner to make money....ok there were limits, but not many....soooooooo right now in my life i would pick karaoke over singing with a live band...Billy

Nope - there was one place here that had it but they got sideways with the company that collects royalties. Had to shut it down. Would really like trying to sing with a live band. However I will say this, the individuals that did go said that all the singer sounded like crap. Said that most of the didn't know when to come in and couldn't find where to come back in on the break. I'd still like to try.

The hardest part is knowing when to come in and stop and restart--but he band leader gives you the cues on that.

so they had the lyrics posted somewhere for you to see? this is different than i thought then. i considered it to be more like open mic night rather than karaoke.
