I think it's a sad commentary on the environment at Singers Showcase that when someone gives anything other than unqualified praise it becomes big news.

But as long as we're talking about it, I agree Listener X (who does appear to have been around awhile, probably under another name) is very good at finding both the positive and negative aspects of a sub and delivers his comments with tact.  And I usually agree with his observations.

I disagree with your perspective as to the definition of karaoke.  Karaoke only means that you’re singing to recorded music.  It does not mean that the words have to be displayed.  I also believe that karaoke is for the established singers as well as those that trying to sing for the first time.  It’s all about singing.  My question is this – what is wrong with a karaoke singer wanting to improve his singing.   A lot of singers, like me, who haven’t been singing for a long time, would really like to critiqued.  Singers Showcase has more than its share of excellent singers and if I can learn anything about how I can improve my singing I’m going to listen to them.  It’s up to me if use the advice that they offer.  I’m a singer – I don’t like the way I sound on a lot of my recordings.  So when there’s an individual out there that can listen to my sub and let me know when and if I’m going flat, I not only want his help, I need his help.  As for his being able to sing – there is a college voice coach here that came to here me sing not long ago, he gave me a lot of good which I’ve taken.  I can sing circles around him but he has something that I never will - he knows more about singing.  He can tell me what I need to do to prefect my voice.  By the way – listener x has been right about every song of mine he/she has critiqued.

Hear, hear. I also am a new singer, and I do want to hear the honest things others have to say. I already know my voice is not either really outstanding or really awful, so you can't make me cry by making some strong comment. I want to hear how I can improve.

I've never come across any verbiage from Listener X that requires the quick perusal of a dictionary; whoever it is speaks in very easy to understand terms.  Having some musical training or musical vocabulary is not indicative of being stuffy (try explaining to people here and elsewhere that a standard, sung fairly straight, is not "jazz") and if someone like that can broaden people's general knowledge of popular music and terminology, I laud their efforts.

The thread ask people's opinion and that was mine....I don't want some one who to me is not anymore qualified than me telling me where I went wrong....

I can hear where I go wrong...I can hear when im out of time or off pitch.

For those who cannot...then that is fine.

As for karaoke and people who sing for a living with backing tracks....That is two different things in my opinion.

If you can sing with a backing track or a live band then that is Great!!!!

But if you have to have that karaoke screen showing you the words on the screen because you cannot remember the words or stay in time....Then that is karaoke.

There are people who perform for a living using karaoke....That is fine too but I don't even know if that is legal....If your making a living singing to karaoke tracks then I would think you have to pay a fee to the copy right holder to sing there songs...for a living.

If your a karaoke host just putting on a karaoke show thats different.

E.J.....If karaoke host had only backing tracks with no words on the karaoke tv screen...not very many people could even get up on stage to sing.

Those who can should be doing it for a living assuming they are good enough.

If you cant take the criticism then put j or L beside your sub...its that simple.

My point is karaoke is karaoke....So for those who want critque on how to improve there singing because they are using karaoke as means to learn how to sing than that is cool.

I thought the Ranking was for karaoke singers....comparing one karaoke singer to another on a scale from 1-10

...instead its turned into people thinking its about being ranked or critiqued on how good they are now and how can they improve so the can make a living at singing.

If it were only about karaoke...Then the ranking would make sense because this is a karaoke site....Pro singers use live bands or backing tracks ..not karaoke tracks!!

I  do not know of Pros who use karaoke...unless they are out with there friends at a karaoke bar just doing it for fun!!  LMAO

I resubmitted my Mack The knife sub from July. The recording quality will be compromised because I had to rerecord it , long story.

There are a few week spots in that sub so they won't surprise me when they are mentioned. I can think of one thing right off the bat that is wrong with it, I sound somewhat removed from the music, out of touch. My levels were not steady either. There was also a spot where I used a vibrato and shouldn't have. The were also a couple of spots where I was a little slow on coming in with some words. What I'm hoping to read is things that I did wrong and I didn't mention here. Many of these things I can't hear for myself.

I hoping I can get another point of view on this sub to help with my singing.

I just remembered that when searching for Chuck2 in Singers Showcase my songs can't be found. If looking try "Aspires To Mediocrity".

Im sorry ya had to get all worked up 'bout that but I agree with alot of what you said..If you want to be a pro go to a pro site,is what I think..BUT if you can "handle" being around those of us that ARENT pros as this IS a KARAOKE site without putting others down & feeling like you are better than everyone else I think its kool to have you here as we could ALL learn a few things that we need to work on that pros can teach us. But STILL it is a KARAOKE site, Take it as it is...FUN !!

I also agree with Vicki if ya dont want to be critiqued just put J or L...No Biggie No Drama No Hurt Feelings No Problems...if someone is comfortable in the way they sound so be it...Let it be !!

I earn money from my voice Jesse does that make me a pro? Are you saying I shouldnt be on this site? Its not about feeling better or worse, it should be about community. Liking the folk you are in contact with, creating friendships...and yes dislikes too cos that is what real communities are made of.
My interest in this site has little or nothing to do with how I perceive myself as a singer.
But for the record I use the same tracks when I sing as you do when you karaoke

i have to disagree with u somewhat....i honestly don't know the differents in a PRO. and an AMATURE, other then one gets paid for a survice and the amature doesn't....and if u were a pro, at one point how long do u have to be out of that line of work before u r no longer a pro.?  can u after becoming a pro, also go back to being an amature?  

i have heard some great singers on here an other sites that could easly be pro's/ make a living at singing....and i've also heard so called pro's that shouldn't be making a living at singing....l...JMO....so i believe being a PRO is a very loose term these days....

but i do agree that karaoke should be all about fun, but for some,  learning how to sing better is fun, to each his own....the feeling of getting better at something u love would be hard to beat i think....

does this listener ....x know whats he/shes talking about? i haven't a clue....i didn't really agree with to much he said on my song but i am glad he was being honest....even if he was wrong...l...he has that right....as we all do....

theres also a Cowboy Al ...i thinkkkkkk, thats critiqueing, not to sure about him either but....tell me YOUR truth what YOU hear  an i won't have a problem at all...
will i learn from it,  maybe i will.....i know plenty that can hear what i can't hear and they can also convey  it much better then i can....i hear basic things...most can hear those.... Chuck was mentioning things up there that i never listen for...i just sing an let it bump...i don't take my singing very serious, not anymore, its all about fun to me now....but for many its not, they truly want to get better, and yes it is fun to be critiqued....NO !!! ....its fun when  someone is being honest with you, wheather u agree r not....

plenty of pro's sing at karaoke....that doesn't make them less of a pro....wheather they read the words r not....they may not know the song well enough.

but u have to agree that when someone says they love the way u sang a song r that they loved the way u phrased that line r whatever u like it....as we all do....

personally i think u have a great voice,  and i tell u so, and its truly what i feel....sure i fluff everyone does....and yes its hard to sometime tell what is fluff and whats not....but ur  to good NOT to know when someone is telling u u sing great....

now if i came to you and said Jesse i'm not sure i liked how u did that second line...iffffff you had a big fat C by the song....then take it for what its worth....take it r leave it.....

personally i pretty well know where i stand in singing, not the best not the worst....10 people can critique me and i might disagree with everything they said, but if there being honest i have no problem with it....

i've had people say to me...omg ur a great singer, great voice, i've heard others say....he has an ok voice, he can sing but i had rather hear so and so.....doesn't bother me....can't pleaseum all....

so i think honest critique is a very needed thing here, but i don't think rateing will everrrrrrr work....so i won't even go there....

to be honest with u Jesse i didn't know that u weren't a pro at one point....very surprised....
if u put all karaoke singers in 1 class an the pro's in another i think u would be wrong in doing that.....and ur my point....ur much better then what u think u r,

its wierd but i find that for the most part...the people that can really sing r the very ones that don't think they can....thats hard for me to understand....surely u know u can really sing....

there r different levels of so called karaoke singers as well as so called pro's....

i think karaoke sites should be about yes karaoke singers, singers with less talent in singing if u will, but also about karaoke singers that won't to learn and get better...to where one day they might just become a pro. singer...

Jesse, I think this website is about the fun first. If people get hurt then something is being done wrong. I hope you don't try to leave us. There are a lot of people here who really like you.

I am not a pro singer. I am trying to get back into acting and singing will be necessary sometimes. You know I'm trying to break into voice-over acting right? Singing relates directly to that in so many ways. I don't want to be the best singer here or anywhere. I want to be able to get a job that I can do and it requires study and practice.

I have to get my lessons anywhere I can. I can't afford to hire someone to train or critique me.

You're a good guy Jesse. I've always liked you.

I've felt the name "Singer's Showcase" encompassed singers of all types and styles, karaoke to opera, and in fact, we've had opera singers perform on it as well.  Much of singing is entirely subjective; with that said, if you have entertained the listener in some shape or form, you've done your job.  You don't necessarily have to sound like yesterday's or today's biggest pop stars.

well I am sure if Listener x or anyone else for that matter feeling the time was right on SS for some constructive critique has now gone running into hiding after reading this thread  LMAO
I am not sure why the drama, or why the threat to leave the site.
I am sure if you dont wish comments from someone you could simply ask them not to bother to comment on you. After all there are so many subs its almost a relief not having to comment or listen to all
