Congrats!! and Good Luck!! I'm SURE you'll have a blast!! I would suggest playing the disks constantly in your cars player so you get used to singing along...It's the way we learn songs on the radio  :D ... You also may try looking at a wall at the back of the room instead of directly at the audience, so you won't get nervous. And again, GOOD LUCK and have fun!!

I'll let you guys in on a trade secret. Among singers there is a standard practice for learning lyrics. It goes like this.

1) Print the lyrics out.
2) Listen to the original song a few times so you know the structure of the song.
3) Take a pen and paper and write the lyrics out without reference to (1) or (2).
4) If you hit a block, refer to 1 & 2.
5) Repeat (2) until the song is in your head.

Trust me on this. It works.

Best of Luck!  Karaoke is fun but with a live band there is the chance for greatness.
I used to be in quite a few bands and did most of the singing and I have to agree that physically writing the lyrics down makes learning it a lot easier.  Also, sing while your're doing something that demands your full attention elsewhere such as a video game, weird but it works.

Well its OFFICIAL now! Im a FOR REAL BLUES SINGER WITH THE BAND! I played my first gig ever last night(sang my 3 songs). I nailed the songs absoluetly SPOT-ON. Sang completly from memory-no song sheets, no cheat sheets--just me and the mic with the band in front of about a 30 person crowd.

Here's how it played out--the band played about 6 songs to open the show, then they called me up. Introduced me a special guest singer, announced the song and got right to it. Getting the first line of the song right was the key......the rest just flowed real smooth. Got plenty of good applause from the crowd. Said thank you when each song was finished. Kept my movments to a minimum--as I like to wave my hands around alot when I sing--and they wanted me to tone that down..so I did.
So I left the stage and they finished the set, took a break and then they did the second set and one encore song.

As I watched I observed many feet tapping, heads bobbing to the rythem, lots of smiles, plenty of applause, no one getting up to leave, and several people checking the band out through the window and then coming in to listen.

Afterwards I had several people come up and compliment me on my blues singing skill level.  Even had one couple that tried to start calling out KURT KURT KURT to try to get me back up to sing some more----but I had to let the air out of ther balloon byt telling them that those were the only 3 songs I knew so far.
The people were amazed that this was the VERY FIRST TIME IN MY LIFE(AGE forty-eight) THAT ID SANG WITH A BLUES BAND. And even more amazed when I told them the only other place Id ever done singing was Karaoke.

So the net result of all this is that the bar owner lady signed the band for 3 more gigs ON THE SPOT and probly in the spring or summer for an outside show(they have an outdoor pavilion that will hold several hundred people).  So my band leader(teacher and instructor) has me working on some more songs to increase my repetoire. So I expect my on-stage time will be increasing.

The bartender lady took some pics that they will probly have on thier website and she will also emial them to me--Ill post them up here when I get them.

So all in all my first foray into REAL live band singing was an excellent success. But like anything else it is a lot of WORK AND EFFORT to make it happen--same as a good Karaoke show---have to prepare, practice and do the work.

PM me and Ill send the name of the club, directions and show dates if anyone around Portland, Canby or Vancouver wants to come out to a show sometime.

Heres a couple of the pics:

First time in my life singing FOR REAL with a blues band!  :D  No word sheet, no TV screen.

My debut with The Northside Blues band!

So anyone else out there wanting to try it---dont be shy and dont be unwilling to be a learner. And be prepared to do THE WORK NECCESSARY to do it RIGHT! Get out there and get after it....dont let anyone disuade you from it. I mean if fat, 48 year old, middle-aged white guy-ME can get out and do it for first time ever-----then so can you!!!
LMAO  LMAO  LMAO

But............dont just run out and quit your day job!!

Kurt,

Very, very impressive.  I've played (more like played around) with a lot of musicians and singers who WANTED to do the blues.  While I was much better at it than most of my counterparts, I couldn't make them understand that playing/singing notes within a specified chord progression doesn't make the sound that comes out the "Blues".

Clearly you have a talent (that's been hidden) and luckily it has been discovered.  Lots of luck!

Eric
