How was it trouble ?  Mine are built like tanks,  waranteed,  but I agree completely, the sales people are crooked as sin,  as is their ploy to come out.  I filed complaints against the company, however now with the advent of national "Do not call" lists they no longer bother me.  I do like they vacuums tech drive system.  It is a heavy piece of equipment tho.. they also convert VERY easily to shampooing systems and small canister vacs.  Electrolux IMO is too cumbersome, although I just noticed they make uprights now.  This I never knew.  Dragging a canister along when you have a power nozzle and a lot of hose length between the vacuums beater brush and cannister is a royal nuisance, just knocks all sorts of stuff over.   Since I have no experience with their upright vacs, I can't do a head/head comparison.  I just don't like cannister vacs.

Still hasn't worn off for me.  It still amazes me the abbount of crap the Raindbo picks up.  I only have one room in the house, and the stairs, that have carpet on it, yet I still use the Rainbow.

Rainbows are/were nice machines. My mother purchased 2 over say 30 years the last upgrade was 10 years ago. I agree that they are a pain to clean out as what ends up in the water is really gross sometimes also they are extremely noisey as the motors in them are really powerful.

Mom used them because of her allergies to dust and the rainbow was excellent in that area as it dramatically reduced the recirculation of dust in the air. Also the unit acted as an air filter itself.

***Flipper pauses for a sip of Coffee***

But my choice would be a Dyson

We have a Hoover Wind Tunnel Bagless with HEPA filter. It sucks great! My only complaint about it is the electrical cord, it's not very pliable. It tends to get kinked up at times, kinda like the old phone cords. Remember those? Where every now and then you had to drop the phone and dangle it and spin it to get the knots out?

Other than that it really cleans up great!

Avoid Dirt Devil products--if they ever need repair it's almost nigh impossible to find parts....we've used a Hoover vacuum cleaner, their carpet steam cleaner and their hard floor electric cleaner for several years now without a problem--very well designed and constructed gadgets.

I never thought I'd be posting on a thread about vacuum cleaners.

We had the "free carpet cleaning" (i.e. high pressure sales tactics at your home while they clean your carpet for three hours) from Kirby when we first moved into our current house.  I loathe the sales method and didn't buy one, thank goodness, as they are very expensive (it's almost like a choice whether I'd like a new vacuum cleaner or a decent used car).  However, I will say this in Kirby's favor: my mother-in-law bought one many years ago and gave it to us.  It's probably at least 30 years old and still works just fine; it's a much better vacuum than one I bought at Sears or somewhere less then ten years ago.  As noted above, it is heavy and cumbersome, but it sucks in the best sense.

I have one of those small Dirt Devils, too.  It's a handy little thing, but I agree that getting parts for it is a problem.  In fact I stopped trying to find the correct size liner bag for it long ago and now just let the dirt build up inside the cloth bag because I've got no choice.  Every so often I take the thing outside and clean it out the best I can.

Anybody got one of those robot vacuums?

Thanks Milo !   Checking it out now.   What I like about Kirby, (but again really don't know enough about Dyson, Miele, rainbow etc) is it's tech drive system,  it's durability, quick conversion for shampoo, cannister vac, upgright, and yes,  it's a solid metal machine that's also a compressor that can be used for painting, inflation, and the best thing... They DO NOT actually cost over 1K.  If you offer one of those tough-sale bozo's $450 hell take it ,  It just trims down the fat on his commission.  Kirby cleaners have A LOT of haggling margin !   Everything over about $350 (maybe 400 now) is sheer commission.  Now for somebody such as myself that's VERY tough on these vacuum cleaners,  I really like the metal and commercial quality of the Kirby Generation 3, and Generation 4 cleaners I own !  Truth be known, the only part I have busted (besides the power cord) was the non-metal lightbulb casing plastic shield on the head, this happens vacuuming under the bed, couches, etc.  The parts for Kirby uprights are easy to get too, and Kirby repair shops are prevalent, quite common... Not costly, and when you take the handle off, and use the thing as a portable hand-vac altho sturdy and strong, this is one very small machine that although heavy for most women to lug around has powerful motor.   I don't know if I can get the hypoallergenic reinforced bags for the G-3 though !   Need to check that out.  It comes apart VERY easily for cleaning too !  I just glanced over the Miele !   That's one tiny little cannister vac for the price btw !!    I hope it's really powerful... To me, it looks like so many of the other smaller cannister vacs that are less than 1/3 the price..

Regarding Dirt Devil, those are just dept store lower-end cleaners,  disposable vacuums in essence that will cost you quite a substantion amount to repair if the beater brush snags a carpet string... I've had vacuums burn out so easily just snagging a throw rug frilled end,  wall to wall yarn that came undone, etc..  The Kirby will grab and rip the thing, others will emit the foul stench of burning rubber and smoke as they go bye-bye !   They won't take harder use.

What device scares a pet and young child more than an upright vaccum ?   Can you imagine a dog, or cat, or just about any pet when it first sees a robo-vac ?   LMAO   My God.   that would be a fun shoot on your camcorder !!!    The robo-vacs I've seen are pretty much limited to linoleum, or vinyl and wooden smooth floors. If you have a very wide and obstacle free room, I can imagine it'd bounce back and forth somewhat accurately over a long period of time covering most of your surface area !  Thing is, like the shark electric brooms and other rechargeable vacs, how strong and efficient are they really ?   I'd just assume mop the floor in two minutes !  It'll cut further into striations, and flooring texture than a robo-vac which in essence is a "pong" ball with a piece of fabric on it  LOL
