I really need to upgrade my nasty Vocopro speakers. I found the Peavey PR 12 to have just about the size and the price is just about right.... I can get a used pair for about 200 bucks.

Does anyone have experience with this speaker? http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/ ... c=3SOSWXXA

Really isn't much of an upgrade IMO.  They might sound a little better than the VP, but you aren't going to have a lot of bass response.  Just make sure your amp is powerful enough to push them.  Peavey are vey power hungry & like the properly rated amp.  Those speakers need an amp that push 400 watts per channel into 8 ohms to sound their best & reduce possible risk of blowing them out with lower powered amps.

I'm only going to use any of my replacement speakers for Vocals. This is for my home use, so everything is stationary. My vocopro mixer/ampliflier do 150w @ 8. It may be under powering the subs, but then again I'm only running vocals through it. All music are played through my home theatre system.

I'm running all RTi series polk, and I have a 12" NHT SubOnei sub that produce more than enough bass. And 5 channel stereo on my Denon reciever delivers even music across the entire room.

My current vocal speakers is an SV-300 which sounds quite crappy. I believe the tweeters are shot so they sound quite muddy.

I can probably dig out a nice Amplifier to use for the speakers if that's what it really takes for better vocals.

Any other compact speakers you can think of that may be a better choice for me in the sub $300 range? I'd like something compact like the SV-300 perhaps even sit them on a cabinet.

In My Opinion The YORKVILLE Y-112 Is A Better Choice Soundwise At The Low Price Of $169.00. A Few KJs In My Area Use The PEAVEY PR Series And I Think They Sound TINNY With A Capital T No Matter How You EQ Them, Especially With No Subwoofer,  Better Yet , Save Your Money And Buy 15 Inch Speakers In The $300 Price Range , There Are Many Good Choices, JBL, YAMAHA, YORKVILLE, PEAVEY.You Won't Regret It! If You Buy Cheap You Get Cheap Especially With Electronics. :read:

I actual own a pair of the Peavey12 .  They are an excellant choice for an affordable light weight speaker.  If you are using these for HOME or small venues you will be just fine !  The bass response is OK for a 12" speaker  for those uses.

Don't get me wrong if you are looking to GIG out at medium sized venues where you need floor thumping bass ...The PR12 is not for you.

But for $200 for 2 12" speakers ----MONEY WELL SPENT  ( AS LONG AS THEY ARE IN GREAT WORKINBG CONDITION)

I also found a pair of the powered version of these speakers locally for about $400 bucks. I'm thinking maybe this isn't a bad idea. Should I go for the powered version and know that they're perfectly matched?

I haven't used the powered version, the PR12, nor have I used the VocoPro speakers, but I use the non-powered PR10s as a small set of mains (Bi-amped with a healthy sub).  They are actually quite nice sounding, with a very flat response in the rooms I have played (ranging from a 30' x 80' meeting hall in a convention center, to private parties in a living room), and more efficient than I suspected they would be by looking at them (95dB at 1 watt/1 Meter for the PR10--the PR12 is rated 97dB).

A little on my background: I used to sell and install car stereo systems and make the local car stereo show circuit.  My specialty was super-efficient and accurate systems that weren't reliant on monstrous amplifiers, but would still put out enough volume to play at dangerous SPLs (135+dB) on half the real power of my competitors.  Coming from that background, I usually prefer to design and build my own speaker cabinets, to meet my needs for compactness vs sound quality, efficiency, and power handling.  My designs have been small and efficient and have gotten me great compliments over the years.  In my cars (when I was in the business), and at my gigs, when I used my own cabinets.

Anyhow, I used to turn away from Peavey speakers, knowing that I could usually build something that sounded better for the same money, and do it in a smaller box, to boot.  In the case of the PR10 boxes I bought, I feel that I would have had to spend a great deal more to do better, and then I would still have a bigger, heavier enclosure (due to building from wood rather than the plastic resin enclosure on the PR series).  I already had all the parts priced and picked to build something that would have had similar sound and power handling (albeit with better bottom end) but in enclosures twice the size and 75% heavier.

Granted, the Peavey PR series are NOT Audiophile quality speakers, but they ARE very accurate for the price point,  quite compact, and handle more power than just about anything at that price as well.  As noted by others, the bass response is lacking, but for vocals only, or if you bi-amp and use a subwoofer, these should serve you well.  Given your use, the PR10 would even suit you well, I bet.

HOWEVER, if you are still with me, here is the best advice ANYONE can give you:  Let your ears decide rather than relying on the mixed, and maybe even uninformed opinions you are presented, here (few here have actually used the PR series speakers, and listening to them attached to someone else's system or looking at the specs on a piece of paper, doesn't count). The only true way to know if you will be happy with any piece of equipment is to use it in your own system in your own environment.  See if your local music shop will sell the speakers to you on a trial basis (or even rent them to you...) and let you try them at home.  If you don't like them, exchange for another model, and repeat until you are happy.  A truly good shop will work with you on something like this, because they know that if they make you happy, you will be back for more, the next time you want to buy something, and you'll be quick to refer business as well.

Good luck and happy listening.

I went to a local Karaoke shop and they sold nothing but Vocopros and Dtech stuff.... they quoted me 350 bucks for a Dtech 3 way, 10" and 2 tweets for 350.... the size of my vocopros now but sounded much smoother.. But I've spent enough money on these Dtech and Vocopro, I might as well spent the same amount (or less) on a setof Peavey which is a brand a lot of professionals trust.

Despite my lousy 150wx2 @ 8 Vocopro mixer/amplifier I'm sure I can create decent karaoke night for my guests. The size of the PR10 seem to be a better match for my little 15x15 room due to the space limitation.. if it can please a crowd in a room that's 30' x 80 I'm sure it'll do great damage @ my home. :)

Don't go to karaoke stores to listen/audition/buy speakers, go to a pro audio store!

I'm with Lonman on this one

The Bay Area should have plenty of pro audio stores. Certianly you have a Guitar Center there....take your player and a couple of discs with you and try all the choices in your budget before you buy. And of course GC has a 30 day return policy so you can take them home and see how they sound there too.

I have a semi good news.... I just picked up 2 sets of Shure PGX4/PGX2 SM58 microphones yesterday. As I was tickering with my system I found that some dumbo had knocked the speakers wire off and put it back in reverse.... I redid the wirings and fired up the new mic and bro do these speakers sound much better. Especially going from a VHF Vocopro mics to the shure mic. We can scream into the mic and it would still be clear. :D, I'm sure if I upgraded my speakers

that shop must be "Professional Karaoke" right?  hehehe. Dont go with Dtech or VP. I'm working at a sport bar with 2 karaoke rooms with 90% Dtech setup. I think Ramsa WS-A80 or EV SX80 would be better choices than PR10. Last time i went to Guitarshowcase and i saw a pair of EV SX80 for $200. Check out Guitarshowcase on Bascom  Ave, sometimes you'll find very good deals on consignment stuffs.
