Yes.  My closest friends are the very ones that often tell me "you really sucked buddy !   Your piano playing sounded so choppy and rusty stick to guitar.  EIther that or start working alot harder because few would call what you just did being a pianist"... It's how musicians often interact..  No offense taken either !  MANY out there listening are harsh,  MANY ARE SIMON !  I'd rather my friends tell me when there's a problem.  I DO NOT want to hear lies encouraging me via white lies to make a fool of myself.

Alot are excellent vocalists too.  Too bad the rank and critique stuff exists at all.  It'd be so much nicer IMO if it could just be kept light and friendly without anybody feeling they need to "rank". When you make something into a competition, it kills the fun in this setting.

Quote was snipped due to too many letters....Letter Limit.

I understand where your coming from, and I agree with most of what you say.

As for me....I think of SS as just another karaoke bar where there are people who can sing like a Pro, and there are those who are good, and there are those who are just starting out.....and those who simply cannot sing due to being tone deaf of just not knowing how to sing.

As far as me giving someone a Rank....This is how I do it:

For a song subbed under C.....

If it sounds as Good as something I have heard on Radio at one time or another... I will give a 10 Rank.....If it is good enough for Radio then it's good enough for me to give a 10 Ranking.

If it is almost as good as something I have heard on Radio but has an obvious glitch such as one word or two being off pitch...I'll give it a 9 Rank because it was less than perfect.

Anything that is worse than the above due to too many places being off pitch....etc...Then I will not even give a Ranking score simply due to the fact that it had too much wrong with it....be it pitch problems or whatever!!!

As far as me trying to help the person by telling them how to improve on those I do not give a Ranking score.....Haha...Like you said...Most can't handle someone trying to help because they either don't hear where they were off.....or...If they do hear where they are off...But then want to say...Who do you think you are telling me how to improve...where is your vocal coach degree.....etc.....Nah...I would rather just not even go there because it is too much trouble.

But those that do deserve a 9 or 10 that I happen to listen to if subbed under C then I will give it to them.

My opinion of what a 10 Rank is exactly what I stated....If it sounds good enough to be on the radio to my ears...Meaning anything from Frank Sinatra to Bob Dylan!! As long as it was a performance that was good enough pitch,timing,emotion,style..blah blah blah..."If it was as Good or better than the original artist"...then I will give a  10 Rank.

My own feelings are VERY little on "the radio" is a "10".  Not to mention that studio mixes I'd be much less forgiving on.  Assuming a person nails the cover to emulate a recording artist (as opposed to trying to make a song their own) *IF* I feel there was absolutely NO room for improvement and I give them a "10" I'm not doing them any favors unless I tell them what they did that I felt to be so spectacular.  It's those VERY few 10's that again IMO especially need to be carefully "critiqued" and scrutinized prior to handing out such a score. I also always question my own ability to "hear" certain things prior to handing out a 10 (perfect) grade. I don't listen to those and make a determination alone either. Often what sounds like a "10" score is a person who is just musically more talented than I am, or a person who's level of skill surpasses my ability to hear certain intricacies. I don't believe giving a "10" is much more than a resignation that "I've never heard, or can imagine that song being performed better than what you just submitted". While it's a complement, it only strokes the ego. IOW.. There is nothing helpful about giving a person just a perfect grade without explaining what was perfect in your opinion about it.  These are among the toughest and most time consuming listens.   I feel that because 10's are handed out in SS like candy, it cheapens things for all.  A "10" in Singers showcase is tantamount with an Ebay purchased Yale diploma.

However, this is just how *I* feel,  It's no more correct than your own system. This is all so subjective.  All I know is that I don't like the interacting I see in SS.  Therefore I don't wish to participate unless a singer asks me personally, and spells out just what they wish to have me listen to, for, etc.

Like I said,  you are every bit as correct in your own system. In fact your own system seems to be what more want.  I'd get boo'd and egg'd out've SS in a heartbeat anyway.  Or, "Well I don't hear you subbing songs Kappy, who are you to give me a horrid 8, everyone else thinks I'm a 9.9555 average on my 499,500 songs in the showcase,  now honestly, what makes you think YOU know what you're talking about ?  please don't listen to me anymore, you obviously have some grudge against me.  An 8... MY God !!!! <throws forearm to brow>"

Oh, and Happy New Year.   I was in here chatting with Vicki when the clock struck midnight my time last night.  2006 hasn't been the most eventful year. This is about one of the least exciting New Years I've had... (no offense Vickie) LOL.  I just would prefer to have more exciting options than the computer at midnight New Years Eve.   If I'm typing in KS at midnight New Years Eve next year,  somebody shoot me !

You should come to our party next year Steven. I mean it.

If Kappy is going - I'm going. I don't live in Texas though. You think I could wear a cowboy hat and boots and go as an impostor?
