Now I didn't say that, which site did you have it made from would be the question.  There are only a handful of legal sites that do customs & several more illegal sites.

Easy way to find out if ANY custom disc is leagl....
Contact SC if it has SC songs on it
Contact CB if it has CB songs on it
Contact Brand X if it has Brand X songs on it

I dunno, I gues the Nutech/SGB songs were the only ones that pirate had downloaded.

and to expand further.....If it were all from one Manu I could think perhaps it might be a legal custom disc.  BUt with songs from several manus, I DOUBT it.

I have bought a few custom discs from legit companies.

They offer Music Maestro, Sound Choice and some others.

But chances are those didn't have printed paper labels either.  The majority of the legal sites lately have thermal disc printing on them making them seem more legal anyway.

Here in my area--Ive been to MANY MANY of the places that Flipper has reffered to (and probley quite a few more that he hasnt) about the pre-loaded Cavs/harddrive systems sold by that particulr KJ. And to a T ALL OF THEM HAVE LARGE ASSORTMENTS of Soundchoice music products on these machines. In fact Ive yet to go to ANY place that had a Cavs system of any type that DOESNT have Soundchoice on thier CAVS system. It is the PREDOMINANT brand of song loaded on these machines.

I think Ill consider myself VERY fortunate that where I DJ we DONT have a Cavs. LASERS and CDG's thank you! Same for my own collection--CDG's only. I

As to the machines themselves, Ive used Cavs once or twice and dont really like them. Ive found them to be VERY SLOW to load seen different KJ's get conufused trying to scroll though different screens and watched the machines get hung up.

Ill take my manual CDG Loader System(my hand) on a single tray JVC machine thank you!!   Complicated technology for simply the sake of having technology can sometimes backfire. I subscribe to the KISS SYSTEM..........KISS---KEEP IT SIMPLE STUPID!!

I don't like the swipes on the CAVS either.  Now I have heard the new JB199 is supposed to be a lot more powerful platform & supposedly took care of alot of those problems.

I won't use DVDs because of the menu screens.     I think that makes you look real unprofessional.

Why, if you run 2 players, 1 is going to be cued up for the next song, so the audience wouldn't see the menu screen.

Every Cavs show I attend has the 199 and I keep saying there are no problems (unique to those shows) with the equipment.

As to the assertion that a CAVS msut have SC and the like illegally loaded, I offer this:
The Karaoke Bar by me (which doesn't as yet use a Cavs system) has a library of 10,000 tracks made up mostly (over 80%) of Music Maestro.  They also have Nutech, Backstage, All Hits, SGB, with bits and pieces of others (Legends, Chartbuster and SC)

This place has been around for 15 years.  I have never found anybody tell me that they avoid the place because of the disk manufaturers.  And granted, I've found a lot of Music Maestro reditions I don't like.  But, there are renditions of song I own on Nutech disks that are superior to CB & SC.   And there are tracks not available from SC or CB

I assume the CAVS has an import function for cdg/mp3 files or zip files. If it doesn't, how do you add songs legally downloaded from their site?

All you need do is rip your SoundChoice disks to cdg/mp3 and load them on a CAVS machine. At that point you are no more or less legal than anyone that is not precisely using a CDG disk player with the original disk loaded.

ripping your originals and adding them to your cavs machine is perfectly legal SC or any other brand.

A really good way to get a feel for what the JB199 strengths and weaknesses is to go to their user forum and tech support center online. I was not able to read many threads but I did get a feel that they are not without their problems. Of course all software based systems namingly Windows based are going to have problems. Many of those problems are user errors.

Technically, by the letter of the LAW, it is ILLEGAL unless you have gotten permission from the disc manu to format shift their product.

If it no different than ripping your "legal SC or any other brand" to a harddrive on a PC.

Now morally, is it wrong, as long as you own the originals, and don't multi-rig?  I say NO.

Mckyj57, I don't understand what point in my post you're responding to.

One of the things my post responded to was a post of SwingcatKurt who indicated his every experience with Cav shows lead him to the conclusion that they all had libraries that are predominantly SC (which I inferred he felt the SC tracks were all illegal).

I referred to a location that is installing a CAVS system, has purchased (I'm told) a library with it, but already owns a library of 10,000+ tracks that is to be loaded onto the CAVS. And ironically, very little of this existing library that will be loaded onto the CAVS is SC!

So, my next point, which I kinda implied is that -   SC ain't necessarily IT!

I was agreeing with you and trying to clarify my understanding. I don't
understand these constant implications that a CAVS machine is somehow
shady and other players/programs/hosters are not. If you are format
shifting, the brand of the target doesn't matter. It is piracy unless
you own the licenses and you run only as many shows as you have
licenses for.

I have seen one outfit which has two songbooks; they have split their
library to put the differing copies on differing machines. If you have
bought any number of disks and collections as I have, you have multiple
copies of a large percentage of the most popular songs. It would be
quite possible to do this, but difficult to document, police, and prove.

I think what we have here is a little confusion regarding what's been ordered and what's legal.  Add in the fact that we have 2 different conversations with a third party and it only gets worse.

CAVS-98/99/199 style players can be preloaded with tracks that have an agreement with CAVS.  These tracks are typically (but not always) of pretty lousy quality.  The brands include (Chartbuster, TMC, Sweet Georgia Brown, All Hits, Backstage and many others).  When you buy these they either come with the original discs or the invoice is sufficient to show ownership - however when you buy these sets you should ALWAYS ask about the legalities of the tracks and call the company that they are including the tracks from about any agreement they might have with CAVS to verify the legality.  This is called due diligence.  Write down WHO you talked to.

But in the end, as long as the tracks are licensed properly from the manufacturer or they are loading original discs they own there shouldn't be any problems with the legalities.

No, I'm not a lawyer, but as long as you use a little common sense and don't trust the vendor 100% (trust but verify) you should be ok.

well, of EVERY CAVS jukebox I've seen in operation, I've noticed quality control issues with ripped songs... sometimes the tracking is off, etc.

The included songs ... there's been a lot of hubbub about that over the years. CAVS got a bit shady with including songs they DIDN'T have the rights to, but I think that they've negotiated them all NOW.

That's the one issue on legality that's GOOD for them.

The one that's bad is that certain unethical people had taken to selling them on the net "fully loaded" with libraries that WERE NOT legal in any way shape or form... and with a fair amount of lies and deceit, convinced the purchasers of these things that they were in FACT legal... when they weren't. The dead giveaway is those that include ANY SC product... unless you get the discs with them, no WAY is that legal.

BC (SC's Studio Manager and head honcho) has stated on MANY occassions that they have vehemiantly denied ALL rights. They even went so far as to try to control people ripping them on there when they DO own the material... they've since backed off on this as the file conversion is a fairly unprosecutable crime.

Hey Big dog  here's the deal I run my show off a harddrive with 94,000 songs. i which I have the cdg's of and riped them in myself. it took me almost 6 months to do it, and I checked it's legal as long as I still have the CDG to show. I don't worry about someone stealing my shows. because I am professional and the best out there. I use Powered mackie speakers and sub woofer. 4 uhf cordless mic's LCD monitors with a slide show of the people who sing at all my shows. and I keep a packed show every night, So if you put more effert in your own equipment as you do worring about others you will never have anthing to worry about.

In reading some of the Cavs forum posts the graphics sweep problem still exists with the JB199 and many folks think it is a programming error. That occured a couple of years ago, while others feel it only exists when they play certian discs. I read quite a bit and in most all of those threads Cavs has not addressed the problem. That would be a big issue for me if I was an owner.
